Baby Face (2:19) 'Tis the season to be jolly once again, and that means its also time for another groovy gallop through the Modern Records archives in an attempt to bring you EVEN MORE MELLOW CATS AND KITTENS than we have already done on two previous volumes of fabulous, early west coast R&B. This, the third - and by no means final - instalment in the MC'N'K series once again draws on the early Modern acetates. In the label's early days, Jules Bihari always recorded far more material than Modern could release, and anyone who has bought the previous two sets will agree that the quality of what Jules left on the shelf is little short of stunning. No less than 16 of this volume's recordings have been confined to acetate for more than half a century, prior to their debut here. Every single one is as good as any master that actually was released at the time on Modern - and many are better. It's great to be able to welcome back several old friends from earlier volumes. The remaining four tracks from Butch Stone's small-but-perfectly-formed cache of repertoire will doubtless be among everyone's favourites. Other returnees include the Three Bits Of Rhythm, Clarence Williams, Helen Humes and Scatman Crothers, represented by sides that pretty much sum up the sound of late 40s/early 50s Central Avenue R&B. Herb Fisher is featured on an early take of his Imperial 78 Ride, Ride, Ride - one of his best Modern sides and, curiously, one of only two that the Biharis chose not to issue. If you like the Amos Milburn/Floyd Dixon sound, you can add Herb to your list of 'must hear's' right away. Also featured are artists who were essential players in the development of post-WWII R&B. You'll know Jimmy Witherspoon, Johnny Otis and Hadda Brooks, but you may be less familiar with Big Jim Wynn or Felix Gross. You will certainly want to know more about both of these LA session stalwarts once you hear the previously unissued Stop - Skip Four Beats (Wynn) and Full House (Gross). Another amazing picker, the brilliant guitarist Mitchell "Tiny" Webb, can also be heard here to devastating effect on B Splat (one of Modern's first releases) as a member of George "Happy" Johnson's 'sextette' and, if anyone ever really manages to lift the veil of mystery that shrouds so many West Coast sessions, he's probably on a good many of the other sides featured here. Modern's earliest days are also handsomely represented by pioneering female vocalists like Numa Lee Davis, Estelle Edison and Pearl Traylor - none of whose careers extended far beyond their Modern sessions. Many of these ladies are accompanied by a tight little combo under the leadership of soon-to-be-seminal bebopper Howard McGhee. We also have a mystery lady on hand to Pitch A Boogie. All I can tell you for sure is that she isn't "Sounders (sic) King" whose name is scrawled on the sleeve that houses her acetate. Even if snow isn't going to be a-glistening in your lane, and whether or not you plan to deck your halls and don your gay apparel, the "Mellow Cats" series - and this volume in particular - offers a darn fine pick-me-up for any seasonal hangover blues that you may be experiencing soon. David Evans is all of these and, above all else, a preservationist revered for his knowledge of the blues and a commitment to its survival. He has worked preserving the blues for the last forty-five years. He received a Grammy for best album notes for Screamin' and Hollerin' the Blues: The Worlds of Charley Patton (Snapper, 2003). Evans was a musical partner with iconic guitarist/vocalist Alan Wilson, before the formation of Canned Heat in the 1960s. When Wilson was propelled into international stardom, Evans pursued a highly celebrated academic musical path. His own career is matched only by what he has contributed to the careers of others. He has performed with artists including Son House, Skip James, Robert Pete Williams and R. L. Burnside and recorded with artists including The Fieldstones, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Johnny Shines and Robert Belfour. For more than a decade, Evans has been affiliated with the Memphis indie label Inside Sounds, releasing Shake That Thing! (1996), with The Last Chance Jug Band, and his solo debut, Match Box Blues (2002). Needy Time is a fourteen-track compilation that includes songs recorded with Wilson-"Baby Please Don't Go" (1964) and "Loving Blues" (1967); "Bottle Up And Go," from a 1979 home recording session with Hammie Nixon; and three tracks recorded in France in 2006. Amongst the balance of the tunes (recorded in 2007), The Last Chance Jug Band accompanies him on "Adam and Even in the Garden Of Eden, " "Old Millington Winery Blues and "Tappin' That Thing, while "Now Is The Needy Time and "God Rode In The Windstorm feature legendary gospel group The Spirit of Memphis Quartet, adding another dynamic element to this stellar collection of traditional-sounding songs. While there is strength in the covers, he performs them "in-the-style-of," rather than recreating them note-for-note, word-for-word, at a level demonstrating his reverence for the originals, while contributing his own voice and stylistic musical spin. The self-penned "Bring the Boys Back Home, is a detailed recounting and political statement about the Iraq war, while "God Rode In The Windstorm is an event song based on Hurricane Katrina, performed in a traditional gospel style. Something To Talk About (3:38) The lead singer for Blood, Sweat & Tears' most popular incarnation was born in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, England, in 1941, the son of a Canadian soldier who served in World War II. David Clayton-Thomas grew up in a suburb of Toronto; living in a difficult family environment, he left home as a teenager and began his musical career at age 23 in the Shays. They became the Bossmen in 1965 and released "Brainwashed" in 1966. After Al Kooper left Blood, Sweat & Tears following the release of Child Is Father to the Man in early 1968, Clayton-Thomas was added to the BS&T lineup as the new frontman/singer, and the group scored a major hit with the Blood, Sweat & Tears album released in January of the following year. The band's hit-filled eponymous sophomore album won the 1969 Grammy for Album of the Year. While singing in BS&T during the late '60s and early '70s, Clayton-Thomas began a solo career, releasing self-titled albums for Decca (1969), Columbia (1972), and RCA (1973). You Don't Have to Go A strikingly gifted multi-instrumentalist with an intuitive understanding of American roots music styles and a sly sense of humor, David Bromberg has earned a following for his many solo recordings and has served as a sideman and collaborator with some of the most respected artists in his field. David Bromberg was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 19, 1945, and spent most of his childhood in Tarrytown, New York. As a teenager, Bromberg got hooked on rock & roll and began exploring the blues, folk, and country artists that informed early rock, such as Pete Seeger, Reverend Gary Davis, Muddy Waters, Flatt & Scruggs, and Bill Monroe. When he was 13, Bromberg began learning the guitar, and after graduating from high school, he attended Columbia University, where he studied musicology and began playing Greenwich Village folk clubs. While his early gigs didn't pay much, he struck up friendships with a number of noted musicians and began studying with his hero Reverend Davis. Bromberg's guitar skills didn't go unnoticed, and he began accompanying a number of village folk acts both on-stage and in the studio, including Tom Paxton, Tom Rush, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Richie Havens. Bromberg was playing guitar with singer Rosalie Sorrels when she was booked to play the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival in Great Britain; Bromberg played an impromptu solo set after Sorrels was done, and he went over well enough that he was offered a deal with Columbia Records as a solo artist. Bromberg's self-titled debut was released in 1971, and featured the song "The Holdup," a radio favorite that Bromberg co-wrote with George Harrison. Between 1971 and 1976, Bromberg recorded six albums for Columbia and toured extensively as well as maintaining a hectic schedule of session work, lending his talents on guitar, Dobro, mandolin, and fiddle to albums by Bob Dylan, Carly Simon, the Eagles, Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson, Gordon Lightfoot, Bonnie Raitt, Doug Sahm, and many more. (Bromberg also produced an album for Dylan that has yet to be released in full.) In 1977, Bromberg signed a new record deal with Fantasy Records, and issued his first album for the label, Reckless Abandon; three more albums of new material followed, but in 1980 Bromberg decided he was tired of the rigors of touring and took a sabbatical from the road, occasionally playing sessions for friends and staging occasional live shows but devoting most of his time to studying at the Kenneth Warren School of Violin Making in Chicago. It wasn't until 1990 that Bromberg released a new album, Sideman Serenade, and it was 2007 when his next studio set appeared, Try Me One More Time, which earned a Grammy nomination as Best Traditional Folk Album. In the meantime, Bromberg had established a successful business building and repairing violins as well as dealing in quality instruments, and in 2002 he opened a shop in Wilmington, Delaware, simply called David Bromberg Fine Violins. You Don't Have To Go (3:16) Among his many attributes, David Bromberg is a generous bandleader, and so the first guitar solo on his latest album is performed by sideman Mark Cosgrove. It's a doozy fittingly punctuated by a "Woo!" from Bromberg. There's plenty of room for the frontman to shine, too, on "The Blues, the Whole Blues and Nothing But the Blues." Bromberg has never sung better, his wise, warm warble enhanced by masterful timing and droll wit. His guitar still gets its licks in, too, whether it's an electric slide on the Chicago-style original "You Don't Have to Go," or an acoustic on Ray Charles' "A Fool for You." Maybe Bromberg is just trying to keep up with the rest of the cast. The album was recorded with his terrific band and produced by Larry Campbell, who plays acoustic slide guitar on a wonderful duet rendition of "Delia." Arrangements are tight and the mood is loose as the group covers material by Robert Johnson, Bessie Smith and Sonny Boy Williamson, among others. The liner notes include useful cut-by-cut commentary from Bromberg, who explains what Johnson meant referring to an ex-mate's "Elgin movements" in "Walkin' Blues." Even as the music industry has leaned more toward pigeonholing artists to fit them into simple categories, listeners are blessed to have a few visionaries who realize that the spirit of truly great music can't always be so tidy and contained. Weckl's fifth Stretch Records release lives up to the promise of its kinetic title, reflecting his ensemble's powerful rhythmic energy and ongoing commitment to melodic invention and improvisational spontaneity. The whirlwind begins with his funky, aggressive drum intro on "Double Up," which leads to a bona fide live jam featuring Brandon Fields' fiery sax, Tom Kennedy's bass throb, Steve Weingart's lively keyboard riffs (including a Fender Rhodes section), and exciting brass flourishes. "Child's Play" shows some of the band's global-minded leanings, opening with a small kids choir and African chanting and delving into a mix of tight jazz fusion and jungly exotica. Weingart's "Mesmer-Eyes" has a similar tribal flavor, with synth vibes, sparse percussion, a moody bassline, and later, staccato sax bursts. The light, swinging, moody soul number "Skipper" is a true showcase for Fields' incomparable sax virtuosity, while also featuring some of Weckl's own wild hi-hat and drum fills. In June 1979 he took the Goldfuss Studio in Munich his first LP "Paying Our Dues' already. As the son of an American father and a German mother, he is caught at an early age by the blues. But other styles such as rhythm and blues, funk and soul will affect his way of singing and playing the guitar. Over the years, Al Jones opportunity given to work with a variety of artists, he cared BB King the support and Johnny Winter, and he shared the stage with ao Champion Jack Dupree, Willie Mabon, Tommy Tucker, Sonny Rhodes Brenda Bell and Louisiana Red. Now add to this list the name of alto and tenor saxophonist Danny Walsh. Although he has been heard these days with Joe Locke, Lenny White, Elvin Jones, and Charles Fambrough, Walsh remains largely unknown outside of New York circles. It is therefore hoped that the new U.S. release of his 1997 SteepleChase set, D's Mood will turn the tides of popularity for this professional who has been an active musician for over two decades now. First and foremost, Walsh is a compelling tenor man with a persuasive and bristling sound and a heady imagination. His solo spot on the title track is chock full of melodic and textural ideas that he logically develops in a manner that is bracing and agreeable at the same time. Then, he's no slouch on the alto horn either. As he starts his several choruses on "I Hear a Rhapsody," the piano and guitar drop out and Walsh subsequently cooks with just the backing of bass and drums, spurred on by the audible vocal encouragement of his crew. This is not the only tune where Walsh is accompanied solely by the strolling of Anderson and Drummond and it just goes to prove how strong a soloist he can be. The closing "Fizzology" also sports a Walsh and Drummond duo moment that catches fire immediately. Even as assured a player as Walsh clearly is, his supporting troupe is equally worthy of a mention. Pianist Joey Calderazzo and guitarist Dave Stryker are no strangers to fans of the current jazz scene and each one brings a vivacity and conviction of purpose to the proceedings that seem to keep everyone on their toes, bolstered so artfully by drummer Billy Drummond.
