Hailing from Austin, Texas, VVV is the alias of Iranian-born electronic producer Shawhin Izaddost. An early Hush Hush alum with additional releases on Holodeck and the short-lived Fortified Audio label, VVV's music often revolves within immersive underground styles that dip into 2-step, downtempo, ambient, and avant-garde sound design territories. Working on the other side of the globe is Holly, the alias of Miguel Oliviera, a skyrocketing trap producer from the coastal town of Caldas Da Rainha in Portugal. In 1954 he presented the first Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island, which became the template for the modern jazz festival. Wein went on to bring the jazz festival concept to New York, where it has been an annual event since 1972, as well as to many other cities around the world.Though he is known first and foremost for his long career as a jazz producer and impresario, Wein is also a jazz musician. I Really Love (3:01) Phoebe Hunt singing "I like to pick at my wounds until they bleed," is your first indication that this is not your typical folk/roots album. Those who have followed the fiddler/vocalist, once a member of the wonderfully eclectic The Belleville Outfit, know she is no stranger to coloring outside of genres. But this first studio set with her Gatherers band occasionally pushes boundaries even further. The album's title (Shanti is Hunt's real first name; it's also a mantra chanted by yogis to promote peace in body, mind and spirit) attempts to connect these eleven songs with a spiritual thread alluded to in the lyrics. Yet it's the generally unplugged music featuring accordion and stand-up bass supporting Hunt's sweet, mellifluous voice, somewhat similar to that of Norah Jones', that finds its unique groove. From the offbeat, minor key jazzy strum of "Telephone" to the Appalachian, backwoods "Lint Head Gal" that finds the protagonist running away from a typical female role ("my hands are hard as any man's/ my heart is even harder") and the exquisite, string-enhanced ballad "Round and Round," featuring a sweet musical conversation between Hunt's fiddle and husband Dominick Leslie's mandolin, there's plenty of fertile ground covered here. Hunt brought her Gatherers band to study music in India for a few weeks prior to this recording. Even though these tunes don't directly reflect Indian instrumentation or composition, the experience is referenced in the title to the prog-bluegrass influenced instrumental "Road to Kolhapur." She goes country rock on the mid-tempo pop rocker "New York," one of the more plugged in tunes and gets deeply romantic on the lovely waltz "Just for Tonight," highlighted by accordion and Leslie's mandolin supporting one of Hunt's lushest and most lusty vocals. Her obtuse lyrics to songs such as "Call My Bluff" ("stepping stones keep falling from beneath the ground") weave between picked mandolin, wordless humming and piano creating a dreamscape that beckons the listener to float into their vibe. This is an album for those, like Hunt, who "really love putting the phone down and spacing out for an hour . losing track of seconds that pass while I sleep," as she sings against sparse, dreamy backing on the closing track. "Living Pearl," her latest release for NNA Tapes, thoughtfully explores the nexus between music and emotion, using vivid electronics as a portal of connection between the mind and the heart. Decker's backgrounds in music, poetry, and sound art all work in conjunction to create a harmonious sonic environment where light and darkness ebb and flow throughout one another, finding a highly personal voice among the diverse lineage of ambient music. Through her use of the synthesizer, Decker investigates the way the evocative qualities of electronic music can elicit emotional responses from the listener, constructing understated melodic phrases that are ripe with warmth and nostalgia, like looking at a faded family photograph. These lines of varying texture and tone shift fluidly across each other, coming in and out of focus in layers in a manner similar to that of visual art or cinema. Multa Nox works with a refreshing purity where all elements mesh into a singular whole, rather than focusing on separate components of technology to convey ideas. The resulting melodies are like clusters of beautiful simplicity that float throughout a colorful landscape, like cells that make up a larger musical organism. Rhythmic devices are introduced subtly, creating a propulsion and momentum that carries the composition forward, never erupting into the driving force of a proper beat, but rather acting as a biological pulse that gives life to the music. Decker injects further humanity into her compositions by utilizing acoustic elements as well, such as human speech and field recordings. By obscuring and abstracting her own voice through techniques such as whispers and cut-up dissections, Decker produces fragments of enunciation that function as textural rather than narrative elements. On tracks like "A Body Holds Still," the gritty sounds of traffic and noise in an urban environment are introduced, reminding the listener of the sharp edge of reality. By combining these field recordings with her manipulated vocal samples, a soft, delicate layer is injected into an increasingly menacing sound world, conveying a stark juxtaposition and vulnerability that can be reflective of our methods of reconciling our innermost conflicts. From this ominous squall, melodic splendor once again emerges like rays of sunlight through clouds, demonstrating a cyclical nature that Multa Nox is able to harness with a sophisticated poise. It is through this musical methodology that Decker is able to mine the subconscious in order to communicate the mystery within the emotional moments we experience as human beings.
