Trumpeter John Swana and tenor saxophonist Ron Blake make up the front line, with bassist Rodney Whitaker and the promising guitarist Jesse Van Ruller completing the rhythm section. There's an emphasis on original music by the band: Penn contributes three tunes, and Whitaker, Swana, and Blake each offer one. But the band opens with Thelonious Monk's minor-key swinger "Teo" and also plays a beautiful "You Must Believe in Spring." Van Ruller and Swana begin the latter, and Blake pairs with the guitarist to end the piece in a similarly subdued fashion. Penn's "Blues for Paris" is a romp over Charlie Parker's "Blues for Alice" changes, with Van Ruller laying out during the horn choruses. "Llevame" adds some Latin percussion and murmured female vocals, "The Western Sky" incorporates a vaguely new age synth wash, and "The Music Outside" flirts a bit with quiet storm R&B, but at heart, this is utterly straightforward smooth jazz with Loeb's laid-back, tasty soloing front and center. Even the pair of pop covers, Steely Dan's "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" and James Taylor's "Shed a Little Light," are transformed into showcases for Loeb's inimitable style. He began his career as a singer/songwriter at age fourteen with a recording contract for Paramount Records. He moved to Nashville in 1963. Chris has written more than 1,000 songs some of them as collaborations with Nashville's best Kris Kristofferson, Mel Tillis, Shel Silverstein, and Eddie Rabbit. Over 100 of his songs were recorded by various artists including: Roy Clark, Johnny Cash, Sonny Curtis, Robert Goulet, Wayne Newton, Johnny Lee, Reba McEntire, Billy Walker, Garry Pucket, KD Lang, Yankee Grey, and Rhett Akins, including "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife", sung by Glen Campbell. "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife" won three M.M.I. awards plus the Millionaires Award for over two million performances. It also won the Nashville Songwriter Award in 1968. Chris recorded five albums for Monument and ABC Dot Records and has written for Sony Music, Warner Chapel Music, and Faverett Music Group. Chris won the Tennessee Williams Playwriting Contest with a collection of one act plays titled "Teeth and Nails". He also wrote a collection of published short stories entitled "Father Duck Tales". Chris continues writing music with some of today's brightest up and coming stars and living the life of a Gypsy Dreamer!
