Folksong Born Steven Frank LaSpina, 24 March 1954, Wichita Falls, Texas, USA. As a child LaSpina studied with his bass playing father although he had to wait until he was tall enough before he had the reach for the upright acoustic instrument. He subsequently studied at university and in Chicago with bass master, Rufus Reid. It was in Chicago that he first played professionally, working from the age of 15 with musicians such as Bunky Green and Larry Novak. In the mid- to late 70s LaSpina was a member of Chet Baker's band, worked with Red Norvo, and also appeared with Marian McPartland, a collaboration that extended into the mid-80s and included recordings such as Personal Choice. Based in New York City from the end of the 70s, LaSpina also played with Mel Lewis' big band, Stan Getz, and at different times with guitarists Jim Hall, Mary Osborne, Jack Wilkins, and Vic Juris. He also worked with Andy LaVerne, Dave Liebman, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Benny Carter, and Bob Brookmeyer, among many. LaSpina has worked with numerous singers over the years, among them Bill Henderson, Mark Murphy, Susannah McCorkle, Michael Feinstein, and Carol Sloane. For several years LaSpina taught bass and improvisation at New York University and other seats of learning. LaSpina is an accomplished composer and his recording sessions as leader feature much of his own relaxed and tuneful music. On these dates, the band is usually a quartet with regular members being Billy Drewes (saxophone), Marc Copland or Jim McNeely (piano), and Jeff Hirshfield (drums). In addition to playing the upright acoustic bass LaSpina also plays electric bass, both fretted and fretless. His playing is fluid, technically assured, and provides lift and drive to the bands in which he plays. The band initially consisted of four musicians - Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley, and Lol Creme - who had written and recorded together for some three years, before assuming the name "10cc" in 1972. 10cc featured two songwriting teams, one "commercial" and one "artistic". Stewart and Gouldman were predominantly pop-songwriters, who created most of the band's accessible songs. By way of contrast, Godley and Creme were the predominantly experimental half of 10cc, featuring an Art School sensibility and cinematic inspired writing. Every member of 10cc was a multi-instrumentalist, singer, writer and producer, and the writing teams frequently switched partners, so that Godley/Gouldman or Creme/Stewart compositions were not uncommon. Her work has exerted an appeal beyond traditional classical audiences, which is all to the good. The title TranceClassical namechecks a contemporary trend, but tends to give the wrong idea about the music, which is not particularly trancelike. The opening and final pieces by Bach and Hildegard of Bingen come from the classical canon; Beiser has said that the version of Bach's "Air on the G string," backed by an electronic evocation of a scratched-up LP record, was inspired by her memories of hearing the piece in just such a way as a child. But most of the music takes rock or contemporary classical music as a point of departure, and you'd have a hard time working up a trance to any of it. Beiser plays her cello, sings, and adds electronic layers, accomplishing various kinds of dialogue among the three realms her music inhabits. Only in David T. Little's Hellhound (track eight), inspired rather than based on Robert Johnson's "Hellhound on My Trail," does she give the music a heavily rhythmic shape. Instead, sample her take on Lou Reed's "Heroin" (track five), where the cello suggests some of the psychological currents contained in the lyrics of the song. Get Down To The Nitty Gritty 11. Blue Lights One of Chicago's most in-demand harmonica players is back with his fifth solo release. If you're not familiar with Matthew Skoller, absorb these credentials. As a producer, he has produced two award-winning albums by Lurrie Bell and figures prominently in Bell's recent release, Can't Shake This Feeling. His tune "The Devil Ain't Got No Music," from Bell's gospel album of the same name, received a BMA nomination as "Song of the Year." He does a version of it here too. Skoller has also played harmonica on three Grammy nominated albums in the last five years: Chicago Blues: A Living History, Still I Rise, by Heritage Blues Orchestra, and Muddy Waters 100. So, respected both by critics and fellow musicians in Chicago, the relocated New Yorker is back with his knack for rather offbeat blues material, revealing a cool mix of both humor and a keen grasp of topical social issues. Of the eleven tunes, nine were written by Skoller and his co-producer, Vincent Bucher. The title track is autobiographical, punctuated by that clever line, ".I need a green card to play the blues." The opener, "Big Box Store Blues," is a tribute and rewriting of John Lee 'Sonny Boy' Williamson's "Welfare Store Blues," lamenting the loss of mom and pop stores and the often deplorable life of the retail worker. "Only in the Blues" talks about the Blues music industry with a dry sense of humor, while "Story of Greed" is his own interesting take on the 1% syndrome. Yes, there are the requisite love and lost love songs too. The slow simmering "Tear Collector" with its burning chorus "I need someone to cry for me tonight" and the shuffling "747," with its lines "She caught a 747/Greyhound runs too slow/Ain't no tracks up in the air/I wonder where did my baby go," are especially memorable. As you might expect, Skoller assembled some of the city's top musicians for this recording including Johnny Iguana on keyboards, Felton Crews on bass, Marc Wilson on drums and stellar guitarists Giles Corey and Eddie Taylor Jr. (son of legend Eddie Taylor). Guitarist Carlos Johnson plays on "Tear Collector" and "747." Background vocalists Mike Avery and Stevie Robinson join in. Given that Skoller relocated to Chicago almost 30 years ago, it is clear that is deeply entrenched and well-versed in the Chicago blues sound. What separates him from many are his thoughtful songs that reflect a social conscience without a preachy approach. The group withstood numerous personnel changes; initially featuring keyboard player Danny White, bassist Kito Poncioni, and vocalists Mark Reilly and Basia, the original group disbanded shortly after releasing their debut album, Whose Side Are You On?, in 1982. Three years later, the group was resurrected with Reilly and keyboard player Mark Fisher, who had previously appeared with the band during a live television show. The group also worked with a variety of guest vocalists. Their 1988 album, Indigo, featured the hit singles "Don't Blame It on That Girl," sung by Emilio Estefan, and "Wam Bam Boogie," sung by Ambassador. A compilation album, A/Collection, sampled earlier recordings and included a new version of "Wam Bam Boogie," featuring the vocals of Kym Mazelle. Released in 2001, Rico, featured a blend of acid jazz and traditional Cuban rhythms. Gee I Wish Harmonica player, songwriter, and singer Mark Hummel is a practitioner of the West Coast blues style, which typically includes elements of jazz and swing. A seasoned bandleader, Hummel achieved wider recognition through nearly constant touring. Hummel was born in New Haven, Connecticut but raised in Los Angeles, California. He became fascinated with the blues-rock of Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Big Brother and the Holding Company, and the Rolling Stones. After seeing songwriter credits on the albums, he began to dig further back into those bands' blues roots. He began playing harmonica in his teens in order to be different from the huge pack of guitar players in his high school. Hummel studied the styles of the Chicago-based players, including James Cotton, Sonny Boy Williamson, Big Walter "Shakey" Horton, and Little Walter Jacobs. Hummel moved to Berkeley, California in 1972 and played with local bluesmen there, including Boogie Jake, Cool Papa, Johnny Waters, and Sonny Lane. After graduating high school, he hitchhiked around the country for three years, making stops in New Orleans, Boston, and Chicago to learn from those cities' top players. In 1980, he formed the Blues Survivors, subsequently performed at numerous blues festivals around the U.S., including the Chicago Blues Festival and the San Francisco Blues Festival. Hummel has released a number of self-produced albums around his Oakland, California home, including Playing in Your Town (1985, Rockinitis Records), Up & Jumpin' (with Canadian guitarist Sue Foley, 1989-1990), and Hard Lovin' (1992, Double Trouble Records). His widely available albums include Feel Like Rockin' (1994, Flying Fish Records), Married to the Blues (1995, Flying Fish), and Heart of Chicago (1997, Tone-Cool/Rounder), an album recorded in Chicago on which Hummel was accompanied by some veteran Chicago sidemen, including drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, guitarist Dave Myers, and producer/guitarist Steve Freund. Considered one of the top harmonica players in the U.S., Hummel has also judged and played in the Hohner Harmonica World Championships, held in Germany; he issued Low Down to Uptown in 1998. Golden State Blues was next, released on new label Electro-Fi with support from Hummel's usual backing band, the Blues Survivors.
