Born in Vienna in 1930, Gulda started piano lessons at the age of seven. When he was 12, he enrolled in the Vienna Music Academy, and four years later received first place in the Geneva International Music Festival. In 1949, Gulda toured Europe and South America, earning international acclaim for his treatments of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven, and the following year he successfully debuted at Carnegie Hall. Gulda became more involved in jazz from 1951 on, when he improvised with Dizzy Gillespie following a performance with the Chicago Symphony. Five years later, Gulda played his first American jazz concert at Birdland (N.Y.C.), followed by a performance at the Newport Jazz Festival. After this, Gulda formed the Eurojazz Orchestra, a jazz combo and big band which drew from both jazz and classical compositions. In 1966, ten years after his Birdland appearance, Gulda organized a modern jazz competition in his native city. He was awarded the Vienna Academy's Beethoven Ring in 1970, but later returned it to protest what he regarded as a constricting educational system. This only reinforced the public's perception of Gulda as an eccentric. This reputation was not helped when he abruptly called off major performances more than once. A 1988 incident occurred in reaction to objections to his program for a Salzburg music festival that included jazz musician Joe Zawinul; he made another last minute cancellation by faking his own death with a phony obituary only days before a scheduled performance of Mozart. Although Matthias may be best known for his contributions to recordings by other artists, the multi-talented musician finally got around to launching a solo career shortly after the dawn of the twenty-first century. The Mellencamp-like opener, "Hanginaround," is one of the strongest tunes here, thanks to its laid-back passion and catchy piano and percussive elements. The familiar feeling "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby" is another lively offering, but at nearly eight minutes it's too long. The emotional, Van Morrison-like lament "All My Friends" feels self-pitying, while the balance of the album is simply bland. Their third album explores scenes of romantic miscommunication ("What the Hell") and self-doubt ("Stuck") with hazy grace, mixing lyrical directness with fuzzy, often gorgeous washes of guitar. "Out of the fog and finally feeling fine," Julia Shapiro sings on "Used to Spend." "My doubts are all gone and I'm having a pretty good time/Feeling like a champ, but for how long?" Taking cues from both the politics of the riot grrrl scene and the intricate, moody guitar-based sound of early-'90s Pacific Northwestern indie bands like Sleater-Kinney and Autoclave, Walla Walla, Washington-based Chastity Belt formed in 2010. The band consisted of lead vocalist/guitarist Julia Shapiro, bassist Annie Truscott, drummer Gretchen Grimm, and guitarist Lydia Lund. The group quickly integrated irreverent humor into its seemingly serious musical presence. Apart from witty and cutting lyrical content, the band named its first locally circulated demo recordings Fuck Chastity Belt and later shot press photos that portrayed Shapiro wearing a chastity belt made out of a raw steak. They continued this trend when releasing their proper debut, No Regerts, in 2013, subtly but intentionally misspelling "No Regrets" as one might on a horribly, ironically botched tattoo. The band toured heavily in support of No Regerts, and returned in early 2015 with sophomore album Time to Go Home on their new label home of Hardly Art Records. Chastity Belt traveled to Portland, Oregon to record fresh material with producer Matthew Simms in the summer of 2016. These works began with the philosophical searchings of Georges Ivanovich Gurdjieff, an Armenian intellectual at the turn of the 20th century. His fascination with the human spirit and his searching for the truth took him on vast journeys through India, Tibet and China. Who Do You Love Combining a revved-up variant on the classic rockabilly sound with a tongue-in-cheek obsession with horror movies and cartoonish violence, the Meteors were the U.K.'s leading psychobilly outfit, and often proudly declared that they were the only true exponents of the style (though history records that the Cramps were serving up their own ghoulish mix of rockabilly and horror first). The Meteors were the brainchild of guitarist and vocalist Paul Fenech, who first made a name for himself in the late '70s as a member of the British rockabilly group the Southern Boys. After a spell, Fenech and Southern Boys upright bassist Nigel Lewis teamed up to form a two-man rockabilly combo, Rock Therapy; drummer Mark Robertson was added to the lineup in 1980, and the group adopted a new name, Raw Deal. In Heaven While Raw Deal was beginning to attract attention among rockabilly fans and had landed spots on compilation albums, Fenech decided to give the group a new image. They adopted a punk-inspired look, added a mock-sinister undertow to their music, and adopted lyrics inspired by horror films such as The Hills Have Eyes and Blue Sunshine. Needing a new name to go with their new image, they began calling themselves the Meteors. In 1981, the group released its first album, In Heaven, issued as part of an ill-fated deal with Island Records, but the band's real breakthrough came with 1983's Wreckin' Crew, which featured a hit single cover of "Johnny Remember Me." By this time, Lewis and Robertson were both out of the band, replaced with Mick White and Steve "Ginger' Meadham taking over on bass and drums, respectively; frequent personnel turnovers would be regular part of the Meteors' story from this point forward, with Fenech the sole constant though literally dozens of lineups. The band remained a popular attraction in the United Kingdom and Europe, touring frequently and releasing recordings at a steady pace through the 1980s and '90s, though it gained only a cult following in the United States. Music That We Breathe - Lilli Paasikivi Finlandia, Op. 26 (version for male choir and orchestra) - YL Male Voice Choir Conductor Osmo Vanska has used his residency at the Minnesota Orchestra to revisit the symphonic music of Jean Sibelius, which he recorded some years ago in acclaimed version with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra in his native Finland. In Vanska's hands, the meaty epic Kullervo has always been a crowd favorite, and it was a natural for the new version offered here. What's new? The energy of live performance for one thing, with the recorded product artfully stitched together from three nights of music at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis. The key vocal soloist, mezzo-soprano Lilli Paasikivi, is actually the same one who appeared on the Lahti Symphony recording, back in the '90s, and she's glorious. Sample the deliberate slow movement "Kullervo's Youth," which in no way lacks intensity: it seems to bespeak great natural forces, and the whole orchestra has a remarkable quality of seeming to flow slowly in a distant epic world. The other major new factor here is the presence of a new work, Migrations, by Finnish composer Olli Kortekangas. The work was commissioned both to mark the Finnish migrations to Minnesota and to provide a companion piece for Kullervo (it was actually intended as a prelude and might have functioned better in that spot in the recording, but was probably relegated to the end so that Kullervo would fit onto the first CD of the double set). It offers a mix of instrumental and vocal movements, the latter set to texts by Minnesota Finnish-American poet Sheila Packa. "The Man Lived in a Tree" is a delightful bit of Nordic Americana, but you'd be hard-pressed to connect the words in the piece as a whole to the specific theme of Finnish migration to America without prior consultation or explanation, and Finland's YL Male Vocal Choir is not overly clear in their English enunciation. They do, however, provide a stirring performance of Sibelius' Finlandia, Op. 26, in a unique version that combines the orchestral original with a choral arrangement Sibelius made in 1940; it was one of the last things he wrote, and it wraps up a concert like this in a very satisfying way. When The Stars Start To Shine (3:49) Thirty years may have passed since their landmark album Dare! helped to define the early-'80s electro scene, but the Human League's signature sound remains just as relevant today thanks to synth pop starlets like La Roux, Ladyhawke, and in particular, Little Boots, who collaborated with lead vocalist Phil Oakey on her 2009 debut, Hands. For Credo, their their first studio album since 2001's Secrets, the Sheffield trio don't require much of a makeover in order to compete with their younger upstarts. Produced by lounge-pop revivalists I Monster (whose Dean Honer also worked with Oakey on the All Seeing I's Top 30 single "First Man in Space"), there are admittedly a few modern concessions, such as the heavy use of Auto-Tune on the robotic disco of opening track "Never Let Me Go," the nods to acid house on "Electric Shock," and the drum'n'bass leanings of the industrial closer "When the Stars Start to Shine." But otherwise it's business as usual, with Catherall and Sulley's half-hearted detached tones combining with Oakey's trademark booming baritone on the likes of "Sky," a melancholic fusion of brooding basslines, kaleidoscopic bleeps, and lost love lyrics; the new wave call and response of "Breaking the Chains," and the stuttering synths and avant-garde theatrics of "Privilege," the latter of which Oakey admitted is a deliberate attempt to recapture the spirit of their 1979 debut, Reproduction. However, apart from "Night People," a pulsating slice of bubbling electro featuring a Dalek-inspired chorus and bizarre lyrics which rhymes "houses" with "mouses", Credo never really comes close to matching the infectious joy of "Don't You Want Me," "Love Action," or even their last major hit, "Tell Me When," its sparse arrangements and lack of memorable melodies, making it difficult to distinguish the majority of its 11 tracks from one another.
