At The Burnside 3:49 Though the Twilight Sad's debut, Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters, and its follow-up, Forget the Night Ahead, were released only two years apart, it feels like more time than that elapsed in the band's evolution. Granted, the band kept busy during that time, releasing the EP Here, It Never Snowed, Afterwards It Did and the compilation album Killed My Parents and Hit the Road and touring with acts like Mogwai. Just how important that activity was to this album becomes apparent quickly: one of the songs collected on Killed My Parents and Hit the Road was the band's cover of the Smiths' "Half a Person," and Forget the Night Ahead's lead track, "Reflection of the Television," with its dense guitars and James Graham's sullen croon, sounds uncannily like a collaboration between Morrissey and Mogwai. While those elements have always been present in the Twilight Sad's music, they've never been so clear; indeed, one of the most notable things about the album is just how much clearer the band's sound is here than it was on Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters. Here, a heavier, denser attack replaces that album's atmospheric drift; these songs are as moody as ever, but muscular -- the guitar roar on "I Became a Prostitute" and "That Birthday Present" recalls Shellac as much as it does My Bloody Valentine or the Twilight Sad's other cited influences. The band's writing is also more direct, giving the album a blunter feel, but the emotions swirling in these songs are still complex. Regret, revenge, and reassurance mingle in Graham's voice when he sings "You and I will bury them all" on "Interrupted" or "Blood is never spilled after dinner" on "The Room." This is the suite recorded by Miles Davis and his band, conducted by Evans, and released to great acclaim in 1959. It was one of the finest collaborations between Evans and Davis, and has gone down in jazz history as a monument of orchestral jazz. The Jazz Symphony premiered in 1927 and is heard here in its original version. It calls for large orchestral resources to colour its melee of dance tunes and disorienting changes of metre. The Piano Concerto No. 1 (1922) may have stylistic allusions to other composers, not least Stravinsky, but it's an imaginative work with lively repartee between soloist and orchestra. Steve Forbert has found critical favor by returning to outtakes and extras from earlier sessions, releasing music that sits comfortably beside his best work. More Young, Guitar Days follows its 2001 companion piece by issuing alternative versions originating from studio and live work between 1975 to 1982. Oddly, guitar-driven songs like "Witch Blues," "The Oil Song," and "Listen to Me" sound a whole lot like alternative country in 2002. John Leventhal's guitar adds a real kick to "You Gotta Go," while legendary harmonica player Sonny Terry sits in on "No Use Running From the Blues." There are live versions of "Romeo's Tune," "Grand Central Station," "Oh, Camille," and "Down by the Sally Gardens" and a nice country take on "Get That Vagabond Feeling." Historically speaking, good guitar music like this must have created an odd impression in the midst of disco madness. More Young, Guitar Days shows that rock & roll didn't die in 1975, but continued to thrive in small enclaves that refused to recognize that the world had moved on. Due to the sometimes graphic subject matter, such music was often banned from radio and only available on a jukebox. The style was most popular in the years before World War II and had a revival in the 1960s. Many songs used innuendo, slang terms, or double entendres, such as Lil Johnson's "Press My Button (Ring My Bell)" ("Come on baby, let's have some fun/Just put your hot dog in my bun"). However, some were very explicit. The most extreme examples were rarely recorded at all, Lucille Bogan's obscene song Shave 'em Dry (1935) being a rare example ("by far the most explicit blues song preserved at a commercial pre-war recording session"). Colin Munn grew up in Saskatchewan, listening to folk and blues. After learning the pennywhistle and mandolin, he quit school and worked with a succession of bands, among them, the Hoo Doo Men. When he was 19 years old, he moved to Vancouver and joined the Night Shades. About two years later, performing under his changed name, Colin James, he was lucky enough to be noticed by the folks at Virgin Records, who signed him. James's 1988 self-titled debut was the fastest-selling album in Canadian history, and he followed that in 1990 with Sudden Stop, and Colin James and the Little Big Band in 1993. In 1995, James switched over to Warner Music Canada, and released Bad Habits. On Bad Habits, James is teamed with some good company: Bobby King and Terry Evans, Mavis Staples, guitarist Waddy Wachtel, Lenny Kravitz and former Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble keyboardist Reese Wynans. All of James's albums are well-recorded affairs. The only problem is, he doesn't tour the U.S. very much, and spends most of his time in Canada.
