(Rare Songs, Very Personal) is her duets album, but unlike other recent releases by singers in this format, which feature two vocalists (and often oddly matched ones, at that), most of the pairings here are with instrumentalists like George Shearing, Toots Thielemans, Phil Woods, and Gary Burton, which means this remains very much Wilson's baby, dominated by her hushed and elegant vocals. Only two tracks feature other vocalists, one of which, a saccharine cover of Marvin Gaye's "Why Did I Choose You" sung with Kenny Lattimore, is worth a plea to the gods to let Gaye return to this veil of tears and give Wilson a worthy singing partner. Less pop than her recent outings, R.S.V.P. is mostly made up of ballads, highlighted by a wonderful version of Gordon Jenkins' "Goodbye" and the elegant, late-night regret of "Blame It on My Youth" which closes out the set, although Wilson steps up and swings on at least one track, the vibrant "Day In, Day Out." The Toronto Blues Society and the blues community came together and staged a benefit which resulted in the acquisition of a guitar made by my friend Joe Yanuziello. It is my main instrument today and was used for the studio part of this record. I chose six songs from the live recording, then booked a day at The Rogue Studios in Toronto and recorded eight new tracks. My old pal David Wilcox was happy to play when I invited him down - until that day in the studio, we had not played together for 37 years ! Colin Linden continues to be a great friend and supporter, and I was so glad he could whup some guitar on my tribute to Hubert Sumlin, as Colin and I share a long history of love for the Howlin' Wolf's music. Each slipcase contains the featured artist's entire performance at Woodstock and, as a bonus, an LP sleeve reproduction of a classic album issued near the time the festival occurred, as well as fine, individually designed 16" X 24" double-sided posters. Sly & the Family Stone were riding the chart success of Stand!, their fifth album in three years(!), that had been released the previous May for Epic when they played the Woodstock Festival. Going on at 3:30 in the morning of Sunday, August 17, 1969, they brought their West Coast meld of soul, R&B, gospel, positive vibes, and the newly emerging funk to the tired masses and turned them into a stomping, screaming, joyous, army of believers. Hearing this set reconstructed in its original context is a gift. The band came storming out of the gate with "M'Lady," and didn't stop for 50 minutes. The music that had previously been heard on the Woodstock albums - "Dance to the Music," as well as the medley of "Music Lover/"Higher," and "I Want to Take You Higher" - actually took place in the middle of the band's concert. Before and after are six other performances that have never been issued before. The gig was comprised mainly of tracks from the then-current album: the title track, "Everyday People," "Sing a Simple Song," "I Want to Take You Higher," and "You Can Make It If You Try." "Love City," a little known jam from the M'Lady LP is also here. "Stand" closes the album on a somewhat mellower groove than they'd started with at its 100-miles-an-hour pace, but it's presented with the ease and flawless execution of a group of master show men and women who can take a crowd to the outer edges of excitement and bring them back seamlessly. The funk groove at the end of the track assures concertgoers that what they'd just heard was real. Sonically, it fares a little better than some of the volumes in this bunch: Eddie Kramer did a fantastic job of mixing. This is a surprise and one of the best titles in the series hands down. Their debut album, Under The Pipal Tree, outlined that mission in twisted, psychedelic fury. Subsequent albums would see the band honing their craft, mastering their mission, and ultimately abandoning that path in favor of more grandiose pursuits. Flanked by increasingly larger orchestras, MONO performed live at some of the most prestigious venues in New York City, London, Tokyo, and Australia. MONO had become an orchestral rock band, a spectacle of extreme melancholy and melodrama. On 2012's For My Parents, the band had finally reached the logical conclusion of that era; it was time to remember where they started, and to rethink where they were heading. Less strings? No strings? Louder?Quieter? Lighter? Darker? Yes. The Last Dawn and Rays of Darkness are a pair of new albums by MONO. Recorded simultaneously yet conceptually and creatively disparate, the two act as both opposing and complementary sides to a story. No strangers to narratives, the two albums explore familiar themes for the band: Hope and hopelessness, love and loss, immense joy and unspeakable pain. Those elemental parts of life and the complicated relationships they create have never been more resonant through MONO's music than they are here. The Last Dawn is the first of these two companion albums, and is the "lighter" of the two, thematically and melodically. It contains undoubtedly some of MONO's strongest songs ever, drawing on an array of influences from minimalist film score to vintage shoegaze. It is MONO at their absolute purest, executing an uncanny, unspoken dialogue with each other without the dozens of stringed instruments that have been so prominent throughout their catalog. The songs are also noticeably more efficient - there hasn't been a MONO full-length record to fit on a single slab of vinyl since 2003's One Step More And You Die - and the album benefits immeasurably from this streamlined approach. MONO have always been masters of telling compelling stories without words. But now they've proven they can do it without frills, too. Rays of Darkness is the first MONO album in 15 years to feature no orchestral instruments whatsoever. That fact alone is remarkable given the band's reputation for sweeping, dramatic instrumentals that recall Oscar-worthy film scores. Instead, Rays of Darkness more closely resembles a jet engine taking off inside a small, crowded auditorium. It is MONO's blackest album ever, a collection of scorched riffs, doom rhythms, and an unexpected contribution from post-hardcore pioneer Tetsu Fukagawa of Envy.
