Tina has been in several rock bands, sung backup vocals for Motown legend Chuck Jackson and performed on many local recordings. Coming from a musical theatre background, jazz standards has always been one of Tina's passionate genres with influences from Natalie Cole, Diana Krall, Peggy Lee, Nancy Wilson and Ella Fitzgerald. As an Indie artist, "Shades of Love" is Tina's newest solo album of "Timeless Jazz Standards". Although she won't abandon her pop rock fans, she has branched out into a vocal jazz genre, recording with a talented group of Denver musicians, Bob Montgomery (piano), Raoul Rossiter (drums), Jon Cullison (Upright bass), Mark Harris (saxes, flute) and Rick Jordan (trumpet). Water Tower (5:01) With roots originally planted deep within the frozen terrain of northern B.C., Roadside Recovery is the third full-length album from Canadian all-girl band, Miss Quincy & The Showdown. The album boasts a penetratingly powerful soundscape that bridges the gaps between rock 'n' roll, blues, soul and a speckle of gospel. The album effortlessly transports listeners to a timelessly cool wood-panelled rock bar you'd expect to frequent in Austin, Texas, where patrons drink beer with a side of whiskey and are treated to live performances from amateur bands that eventually take the music industry by storm. Roadside Recovery kicks off extremely strong with the track "Bad Love." With a thumping bass line that mimics a heart pumping with adrenaline, it perfectly sets the stage for the other nine powerful tracks that follow. The collection has a beautiful storyline to it, carrying a strong build through standout tracks like "Making Money" and "Wild Fucking West," until it climaxes and brings things home with the title track. The band also shows their diversity by slowing things down slightly with numbers "Talkin' Trash" and "Take It to the Well," which show a vulnerable, sexy side and perfectly round out the album. One consistent element is the raunchy-bluesy guitar riffs, superb drum lines and incredibly powerful vocals paired with enticing lyrics, with which Miss Quincy & The Showdown mesmerize. Roadside Recovery is a robustly memorable album that is exemplary within its genre, bringing in classic elements you would expect from bluegrass forefathers of the 1930s but never losing its modern aesthetic. Perhaps it's because the LP has been unavailable in America since the early '70s; it was released on CD only briefly in Japan. Verve's brilliant Originals series has remedied this situation by issuing the gatefold-sleeve of the LP in a fine edition on compact disc (with the original liner notes pasted into a handsome booklet with the original photos). Released in 1965, shortly after the concert took place, this set is regarded by jazz historians as one of the greatest concerts ever to be performed during the MOMA's terrific free concert series during the '60s. During a rare respite from the Modern Jazz Quartet, Jackson was able to record as a solo artist with musicians of his own caliber. In this case his companions are pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Ron Carter (who was already playing with the Miles Davis Quintet), drummer Candy Finch, and James Moody on flute. The program is a lithe, breezy set of tunes written by Jackson, Walton, and Moody, with two exceptions: a beautiful reading of Jimmy Heath's "The Quota" to open the program, and a leisurely, sensitive stroll through J.J. Johnson's "Enigma." Even encountering this in the 21st century, the easy, symbiotic flow and tight arrangements are quite surprising. Heath's tune is a knotty hard bop number with a tight, brief head, and Jackson takes the first solo with requisite hipness and swing. Moody's flute fills the first chorus a bit and then drops out, leaving the rhythm section to dig into it with Jackson. Moody's solo wraps itself around the fat comping chords of Walton and darts in and out of Carter's hard dancing pulse. This is followed by the Latin tinge of "Novamo" by Jackson. The rhythm section sets out pacing a near charanga, and Jackson and Moody move through it with a beautiful, repetitive, singsong melody that quickly gives way to one of the great vibist's elegant high-register solos. Walton was already in his early thirties when he played with Jackson, and he'd been on the N.Y. scene for a decade, but this was before he became a house pianist with Prestige and well-known as a composer. His tune "Turquoise" is a fiery, fast bop waltz, with a terrific front-line melody for Moody and Jackson. Milt takes the first solo and turns the high notes into a blur of groove and grease. There's terrific humor on the set as well: Jackson's "Flying Saucer" begins in montuno mode. His voice at the intro sounds like something from the Twilight Zone before the rhythm section kicks in and he lays out the melody. Moody takes it away from the montuno feel and turns it toward the blues, but Jackson counters and begins singing in a perfect hepcat confidence, reinforcing the Latin groove. It might be the best tune here. Over (1993) Anyone who's aware of La Casa Azul and their bubbly, ultra fresh, and clean take on danceable indie pop should recognize the name Milkyway. Guille Milkyway is the man behind the curtain, responsible for all the music on their albums, and Up, Up and Away: Home Demos 1993-2002 gathers up recordings he made before forming La Casa Azul. Inspired by all sorts of sunny, happy pop music from the '60s (like the Beach Boys, the 5th Dimension, the Turtles) and the 1990s (Pizzicato Five, Saint Etienne, house music), and using every bit of wonderfully corny technology he could get his hands on (vocoders, tinny drum machines, synth horns), the tracks here prove that Milkyway is a skilled musical alchemist who blends these elements into a giddy, almost chirpy sound. The songs here are almost overloaded with hooks, both melodic and musical, as Milkyway holds nothing back. He fills all the available sonic space with vocal harmonies, cheesy synth flourishes, 8-bit bleeps, jangling guitars, tambourines, and skittering electro-pop drumbeats until the songs feel ready to burst. Over the top, Milkyway's sweetly plaintive voice sings of love and gentle melancholy, though he could be singing about ritual dismemberment and you wouldn't realize it thanks to the almost maniacal joy of the music. The collection shows Milkyway trying out different approaches; delving into chamber pop on tracks like "Julie" or "I Know," glitzy Euro-pop on "Bubblegum," and a bunch of cheerfully breezy songs that could have been on La Casa Azul's first couple of releases ("Shine (Go to California)," "Magic People," and "My Groovy Love," to name a few). No matter the style, Milkyway's vision is incredibly appealing pure candy pop, and it's nice to see that La Casa Azul didn't just arrive out of the blue. Press conference (1:30) Mighty Mo Rodgers (real name Maurice Rodgers) was born in Indiana where his father owned a club that featured blues performers. When Rodgers wasn't studying classical piano he was checking out the blues artists that played there. Growing up, Rodgers was deeply affected by the mid-'60s soul music from the Memphis-based Stax label. Using Stax as an influence, Rodgers started his first band while in high school called the Rocketeers. Upon entering Indiana State College, Rodgers fronted another band, the Maurice Rodgers Combo, playing Wurlitzer piano and incorporating originals with cover versions of popular songs from the era. He finally decided to quit college, move to L.A., and give music his full-time attention. There he played gigs and recorded with many blues and R&B legends; his organ can be heard on Brenton Wood's 1967 hit Gimme Little Sign. Throughout the years Rodgers has not limited himself to performing. In 1973 he produced the album Sonny and Terry on A&M records for Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. After growing tired of tedious session work, he continued to write songs and became a house songwriter for Motown and Chappel Publishing. Rodgers also continued to produce sessions for other artists and decided to go back to school where he received a degree in philosophy. In 1999 he released his first solo effort, Blues Is My Wailin' Wall, on Blue Thumb. Stella by Starlight One of many yeoman New York musicians who goes about his work without much fanfare, pianist Michael Weiss is certainly one of the city's finest despite his low profile. Since 1981, he has been an active jazz educator and musician who has spent time with such masters as Art Farmer, Johnny Griffin, and Junior Cook. With only two previous albums under his own name available (one for Criss Cross and another for DIW/Disc Union), the release of this new SteepleChase disc is a valuable addition to Weiss' catalog. A modest trio affair with bassist Paul Gill and drummer Joe Farnsworth (both currently backing singer Diana Krall), Milestones easily qualifies as an excellent example of the art of piano trio jazz. A set of standards provides the fodder for Weiss and crew, with the debut of Jackie McLean's "Walter Davis Ascending" thrown in for good measure. Jobim's "Wave" receives a most venerable and engaging makeover, with Farnsworth's supple Latin groove providing a charged impetus for Weiss' string of incendiary choruses. Kenny Dorham's "Buffalo" also proves to be an astute choice for investigation with Weiss laying down the blues with aplomb. Both McLean's "Little Melonae" and "Just One of Those Things" provide high octane bebop and further proof that Weiss is a multi-talented player capable of undertaking any style or genre. Contributing to the overall success of this affair are the efforts of Gill and Farnsworth. The former is surely one of the brightest of up-and-coming bassists, while the latter has already caught the ears of anyone in touch with the current scene due to his highly musical and complimentary drumming. If there's one disappointment, it might be that the other standards are not quite as creatively altered as the aforementioned highlights, allowing a touch of sameness to creep in towards the end of the disc. That aside, however, there's enough engaging material here to more than push this one over the top and send it off with a solid recommendation. ~ C.
