Young and Free Country artist Levi Lowrey is a vocalist and songwriter who writes about the stuff of real lives with a poet's thoughtfulness and a rocker's passion and commitment. Levi Lowrey was born and raised in Dacula, Georgia, and has connections to country music royalty -- his great-great grandfather was Gid Tanner, the legendary Georgia fiddler and string band leader who was one of country's first successful recording artists. Lowrey himself became a fiddler, and was performing in his hometown at bluegrass shows by the age of 12. Later on, while in high school, Lowrey took up the guitar, and developed a passion for rock & roll, influenced by Georgia pop/rockers the Marvelous Three. After graduating, Lowrey got a job at a recording studio, and formed a rock band of his own, Problem Thomas. The group developed a regional following and gigged regularly in Atlanta and Athens, but by 2006 Lowrey began embracing a different musical voice that incorporated rock, contemporary country, and his earliest musical influences, while he also led the band that played worship services at the church he attended. After a spell playing fiddle with singer and songwriter Sonia Leigh, Lowrey formed a new group, Levi Lowrey & the Community House Band, named for a hall in Dacula that often housed family reunions and similar events; the lineup, featuring a few faces from his church band, included Lowrey on lead vocals, guitar, and fiddle; Danny McAdams on lead guitar and lap steel; Jon Daws on bass; Billy Wilkerson on percussion and vocals; and Daniel McGill on trap drums. The band soon began touring hard, playing 200 dates in 2007, and in 2008 they cut a recording they released themselves, I've Held the Devil's Hand. Lowrey gained a valuable friend and ally in Zac Brown, another Georgia musician mixing up country and rock; after Brown's 2008 album The Foundation became a breakout hit, he launched his own label, Southern Ground, and in 2009 Lowrey and his band signed a deal with Brown's new imprint. Lowrey went on tour opening for Zac Brown, and Lowrey began co-writing tunes with Brown, including the hits "Colder Weather," "Day for the Dead," and "The Wind." In 2011, Lowrey released his first album through Southern Ground, I Confess I Was a Fool, and by the time they next rolled into the studio, the band was a four-piece, with Wilkerson out and Lawrence Nemenz replacing McGill behind the drum kit. Blue Magic's debut single "Spell" was released in November 1972 and work on the album began in early 1973. Two more singles, "Look Me Up" and "Stop to Start" were released during 1973; all performed respectably on the R&B chart with "Stop to Start" also crossing over into the lower reaches of the pop chart. The album was released on January 9, 1974, followed shortly thereafter by a fourth single, "Sideshow", the lush, dreamy and loss-filled atmosphere of which immediately caught on and became a major hit, topping the R&B chart and reaching #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. Another track on the album was the lengthy "Just Don't Want to Be Lonely", which Ronnie Dyson had taken into the R&B top 30 in July 1973, then became a bigger hit for New York group The Main Ingredient, whose version reached both the R&B and pop top 10 at around the same time Blue Magic was released. Blue Magic peaked at #4 on the R&B album chart and #45 on the pop chart. Music for the album was provided by Sigma Sound Studios' legendary house band MFSB. Bobby Eli, co-composer of "Sideshow" and "Just Don't Want to Be Lonely", who worked as a guitarist on the album, stated in the liner notes of the 2007 reissue of the album that he believed that Harris was equally at home with uptempo material as with ballads and, citing the tracks "Look Me Up" and "Welcome to the Club" as classic examples of the proto-disco sound of 1973-74, expressed his opinion that Harris' expertise in this field gave Blue Magic the ability to deliver convincing uptempo tracks in a way which largely eluded other Philadelphia soul groups with whom they are usually bracketed, notably The Stylistics and The Delfonics. True Lorraine Feather, a native of New York City who grew up in Los Angeles, is the daughter of jazz critic Leonard Feather and his wife, Jane (a professional singer), while jazz legend Billie Holiday was her godmother. Exposed to a variety of music in her household, such a career almost seemed to be her destiny, though her parents neither pushed nor discouraged her. After finishing school, Feather returned to Manhattan to pursue acting, doing a bit of singing to pay the bills, including cabaret. She was in the Broadway and touring casts of Jesus Christ Superstar and later sang backup for Grand Funk Railroad and Petula Clark. Open to many musical interests, Feather began focusing on jazz in the late '70s, making her debut on an album by pianist Joanne Grauer and recording her first jazz LP for Concord (Sweet Lorraine) in 1978. In the 1990s, Feather became a first-rate jazz singer as a member of the vocal group Full Swing, developing her expressive contralto to capture the essence of every song. She began regularly contributing lyrics to their repertoire, but her writing career blossomed when she began recording on her own. Her ability to write lyrics to challenging, often obscure instrumentals by Fats Waller and Duke Ellington, while also collaborating with several excellent, currently active songwriters, has impressed many jazz critics. Humor is especially her strong suit ("Imaginary Guy," "You're Outa Here," "Antarctica," and "Indiana Lana"), though her ballads, swing vehicles, and pop songs also merit strong praise. Feather has also written extensively for television (she has earned seven Emmy nominations) and movie soundtracks, including The Jungle Book 2 and Julie Andrews' vocal comeback in The Princess Diaries 2.
