    Artist: James Walsh Gypsy Band Title: I've Got The Feelin' [Japan] Year Of Release: 2016 (1979) Label: P-Vine Records [PCD-24441] Genre: Blue-Eyed Soul, R&B, Pop/Rock Quality: FLAC (image+.cue+.log,scans) Total Time: 34:40 Total Size: 229 MB The James Walsh Gypsy Band is kind of the outfit to go to if you're looking for some blue-eyed soul but, just like Ned Doheny and his sublime reissue on Numero, the band never fully came out of its shell and they were limited to just one album on RCA Victor, 1998's self-tiled LP.until now. I've Got The Feelin' was recorded a year later, in 1979, at the legendary Muscle Shoal Studios, but it never made it out onto the shelves apart from a seriously limited CDR run. Norway's Preservation has thankfully done the right thing by pressing it up on vinyl, and the opening title track is as just as wonderful as the first time we heard - a true soul masterpiece with a clear LA influence. "Looks Like You Got Down In Love" is a funkier, more soulful version of Credence at their deepest, while other highlights include the supremely majestic "It's Over Now", and the tear-jerking "Alabama Eyes". Jamhunters are on the run. Coming from Denmark Lars Fabiansen (guitar) and Peter Michael (keyboards) define smooth jazz in a new way. Both are experienced and acclaimed musicians. The first product of their collaboration was in 2006 the debut album Jamhunters followed by their new album Music Speaks Louder Than Words (2008). Parti[beeep]ting musicians on the new album are Hans Ulrik (sax), Klaus Menzer (drums), Christina Boelskifte (vocals), Andre Sorensen (bass), Bo Fabiansen (drums), Claus Suhr (percussion) and Moussa Diallo (bass). Further guest musicians are Chris Minh Doky (bass) and Frank Senior (vocals), both from New York. "We ran into Frank in New York last autumn. We were there to play a few club gigs and accidentally heard Frank humming to a live band. We simply had to persuade him to work with us on our next album", says Lars from Jamhunters. The smooth jazz cruise arrives at The Pier. The fluffy stomping tune reveals uplifting mood and sunshine moments. Get on the dance floor. Incredible is the right title for Lars Fabiansen's work on guitar, Peter Michael's wizardry on keys and the magic of Hans Ulrik's performance on sax. The tune is in good tradition of European lounge in the style of US3 and St. Germain. Room For Milk shows more of Lars' heritage, George Benson and Wes Montgomery are certainly his idols. He has this certain elegant groove, we love so deeply. Christina Boelskifte's humming is an awesome frame for the guitar sound. On the ballade No One Like You Christina has more opportunity to mesmerize the audience with her silky and warm vocals. We are Paralyzed by Moussa Dialo's bass. Moussa, who lives in Denmark, is not only a professional bass player but a splendid story teller. Listen to his African roots in the music. The soulful One More Minute presents the great singer Frank Senior. Frank blind from birth, is a native New Yorker and was raised in Harlem, where jazz played a major role in his musical career. His style of music is jazz, blues, standards and gospel, ranging from the 1930s to the present. His flabbergasting vocals remind me of singer legends like Barry White, Luther Vandross or Joe Lucien. Obviously inspired by Herbie Hancock's Cantaloupe Island or US3's Flip Fantasia Shoot sets the groove in motion. The Hammond B3 sound gives the tune that heavy retro drive we like. The relaxing Lazy features anew Christina Boelskifte's gracious vocals. Don't await behind Eurabian Fantasy something with an oriental appeal. This tune is right in the mix with European ingredients of the finest music. Music Speaks is Jamhunters' philosophy. Wes Montgomery played In Your Own Sweet Way and Lars Fabiansen captures this mood of a late sunny afternoon. To get you an imagination of this guitarist I would compare him with Zachary Breaux or Ronny Jordan. Tah-Two is a good example of this groovy style with ease. Since Steve Wonder's Superstition is the clavinet a popular instrument, although Hohner unfortunately stopped the production. On Practisin' Peter Michael delivers a fantastic intro on this historical keyboard. The shuffle beat is a strong ground for Lars' guitar exploration. Chill out with Jamfadin', a sensitive journey into the world of dreams. The album is closed with a radio-edited version of One More Minute featuring the sensationel Frank Senior. Music Speaks Louder Than Words is from start to finish a great smooth jazz album. A project of professionals who know their work. Heart Of The Matter is the second lyrical approach on this album perfectly realized with great support of Mitch Forman on piano, Larry Steen on acoustic bass and David Karasony on drums. For me the most appealing side of this brilliant guitarist. With expansive chords Chris wanders on Escapade through the soundscape of modern music. Merry Go Round is the counterpart to the previous tune. Starting as a homespun waltz the song surprisingly transfers to a swinging jazz piece. On Castle In The Sky Chris accompanies his guitar with a guitarlele. As the name suggests, the guitarlele is a cross between a classical guitar and a ukulele. The guitar walks on the wild side of life, while the guitarlele delivers a pinch of happiness. Nightingale's Bridge closes the album with Standrings' very own contemplation. I love the hypnotic groove of the Â? time signature. The steel drums capture the warmth, vibrancy and joy I intended to express when composing this song. Kahuku As the title implies, this song is inspired by the small rural town on the north shore of Oahu in Hawaii near the site of my all time favorite body surfing beach. The 5/4 time signature is rhythmically reminiscent of the sensation I feel when I'm body surfing or simply watching the waves on the islands. Priceless A fun, funky piece with lots of harmonic movement. Abe and Will groove so hard on this one while Jeff Beal gives us a hint of Miles on his trumpet. Its one of my favorite guitar solos on the record because I played a variety of jazz lines interjected with blues inflections. Will's drum solo at the end of the song is truly one of a kind! The Big Step This song incorporates three separate feels. The first one has an open quality to it, the second sounds almost like a typical r&b groove, and the third is just downright funky. I heard sax on this as I composed it and Brandon Fields did an amazing job. I used my Fender Stratocaster to give it more of a rock edge. Brandon and I did a few nice trades towards the end. Aqua Mostly in 7/4, this tune starts with an ostinato bass pattern layered with an array of chord textures. The main melodic theme expresses this album's concept of "Aqua" because beneath the simple melody runs an undercurrent of artfully crafted and intricate harmonies. Where I Belong A romantic, soulful ballad, like the title implies ~ something you feel when its so right with someone. The use of steel drums on the melody doubling my guitar adds dimension. The way that I'm accompanied on my solo in the second half is truly divine. Sparks fly and a subtle funky groove sets in. Storm Before the Calm This one is the most complex tune of all. There are a lot of rhythms and odd time signatures, but throughout there's a polished groove. Simon Philips makes this tune sound so simple with his ability to refine complexity, delivering a sense of elegance. Brandon's skillful solo over a series of very difficult chord changes proves him to be one of the best around. Peace of Work A medium tempo, cool, funky Â? groove that doesn't quite feel like Â?. Awesome trumpet again by Jeff Beal. Dean Taba's upright bass gives a wider dimension to the bottom. Its so much fun to improvise over this because the song goes through three different transitions. Simon's brilliant drum solo towards the end is quirky and rhythmically unique. This is a real fun song to play live. The Nest This song has a majestic beginning with an upward moving, anthem-like rock (ala Jeff Beck-ish) sound to it. Mitchel Forman's moving synth solo is mysterious, exotic and purely original. I use my Strat again this time for more of a rock edge. Down By the River This is my arrangement of the haunting Neil Young classic. Originally, I intended to play my Strat to get more of a rock sound. Jour De Fete European jazz harmonica players aren't exactly a dime a dozen, but the Old Continent has birthed a few for the ages. Belgium gave unto jazz the legendary Toots Thielemans, Germany put forth vibes/harmonica doubling sensation Hendrik Meurkens, and the Swiss turned out Gregoire Maret; now, the French weigh in with the young Yvonnick Prene. Jour De Fete marks Prene's debut and it proves to be an excellent showcase for his writing and playing. He readily identifies Thielemans, Maret and Stevie Wonder as inspirations and influences, and he's clearly tapped into their work to feed and fuel his own musical imagination. A breezy, devil may care attitude which connects to a good deal of Theilemans' oeuvre comes through in oft-played pieces like "Con Alma" and "Nobody Else But Me," but that only paints a partial picture of Prene's personality. Low intensity funk comes to the fore on "A Billion Stars," which features snippets of spoken word recordings featuring science fiction writer Ray Bradbury's voice, and light-yet-propulsive swing-to-Latin rhythms take hold during saxophonist John Coltrane's "Satellite," which opens on some playful dialogue between Prene and guitarist Isaac Darche. Classic tunes are peppered throughout the program, but the lion's share of the material comes from Prene's pen. He visits in on a variety of musical areas in his writing, but his instrumental voice remains remarkably consistent throughout. "Escale" bears a Brazilian beauty mark, "As Night Falls" shows off Prene's predilection for lyrical lines, and "Home" hits the heart head-on; this uplifting number proves to be the most memorable original of the bunch. These days, Prene calls Brooklyn, New York his home, but the spirit of Gay Paree still lives within his highly agreeable music.
