Dreamsville Vibraphonist Joe Locke offers a fresh look at works by Henry Mancini on this release, as he leads a powerhouse quartet that includes pianist Billy Childs, bassist Eddie Gomez, and drummer Gene Jackson. His dramatic and spacious treatment of one of Mancini's most beloved works, "Moon River," gives the oft-recorded song a very new sound, while another frequently played number, "Days of Wine and Roses," begins with a dreamy introduction before progressing into a head-shaking hard bop arrangement. "Charade" is another well-loved movie theme that gets a thorough revamping; in Billy Childs' chart the piano alternates between a swirling line that contrasts with the leader as he plays its theme with a straight-ahead bop segment. But the group is not content just to stick to Mancini's best-known songs; "Loss of Love" is a straight-ahead ballad nailed on the first take, while "Whistling Away the Dark" showcases Eddie Gomez's lovely arco bass. Going Home Joey Calderazzo has carved out a sneaky-good career for himself. Probably best known for replacing Kenny Kirkland in the piano chair of the Branford Marsalis Quartet, he has released nine discs as a leader over the past 24 years. Although they routinely garner plaudits, he's not the type of highly conceptual stylist who registers in the polls. His art is mostly formulated by the breadth and precision of his craft. Going Home piques the intellect and challenges that breadth and precision with open-ended tunes that encourage improvisation. (Seven out of the nine cuts are Calderazzo originals.) He operates in a classic piano-trio format with bassist Orlando le Fleming and drummer Adam Cruz, and it's a pleasure to hear their tentative forays on foundational riffs and barebones themes gradually quicken into more detailed textures and confident interactions. The slow-boiling intensity that eventually enlivens "Manifold" and "Legend" is a particular highlight. Calderazzo has absorbed the contemporary masters of his instrument in a manner that informs rather than sacrifices his own identity. You hear the prowling gallop of McCoy Tyner, the playful hopscotch of Chick Corea and the ascending vamps of Herbie Hancock all churning within the mix of his improvisations. The Crescent City jazz-funk of "One Way" (previously heard on Calderazzo's 2011 album of duets with Branford Marsalis, Songs of Mirth and Melancholy) feels like a delightful hybrid of Hancock and Dr. John. The better of the disc's two standards, "Stars Fell on Alabama," is a perfectly rendered soul-blues tearjerker that variously recalls Ray Charles and Hank Jones. Calderazzo invokes all these linkages without any sense of pastiche or indebtedness, creating a personal style that yields enhanced professionalism and reduced notoriety. There are no guest stars except for Marsalis blowing plush tenor on the elegantly subdued "I Never Knew." The rich trio interplay that characterizes most of the record is overshadowed by Calderazzo's muscular virtuosity on the final two numbers, "Mike's Song" (a tribute to his early employer Michael Brecker) and the emotionally evocative title track, performed solo, that closes the collection. She was a scholarship student at Berklee College of music in Boston where she gratuated 1996 with a Bachelor's degree in music education. She produced her first CD "Johanna Grussner Band" 1995. Mrs Grussner moved straight to New York City where she continued her musical studies at Manhattan School of Music and graduated in 1998 with a Master's degree in jazz performance. That same Spring she released her second album "Live at Hubbard Hall" with her own 19-piece big band "The Johanna Grussner Manhattan Jazz Orchestra". They toured Scandinavia the same summer where they performed at prestigous jazz festivals and clubs including shows with The American vocal group The New York Voices. The tour ended with concerts at the New York jazz clubs "Birdland" and "Kavehaz" such as Nalen, Mosebacke, Fasching and Glenn Miller. Mrs Grussner continued to work in New York as a freelance vocalist and a recording artist. Besides her own groups she sang lead in the a cappella quartet "Vox Bop" who won first price in the New York Sweepstakes Competition in 2001. She also recorded her third CD "Hur man raddar karleken & annat" with pianist and arranger Mika Pohjola. The album was produced by the Finnish Broadcasting company 2000. The album comprises the contents of two separate sessions - one recorded in 1970 with guitarist James "Blood" Ulmer, drummer Leroy Williams and saxophonist/flautist Marvin Cabell; the other recorded in 1969 with Cabell, Williams, and saxophonist George Coleman - that were very similiar in concept and execution. Patton leads his combo through a selection of originals and covers that range from Wayne Shorter and McCoy Tyner to the Meters. Though the group is rooted in soul-jazz, they stretch the limits of the genre on these sessions, showing a willingness to experiment, while still dipping into the more traditional blues and funk reserves. Consequently, Memphis to New York Spirit doesn't have a consistent groove like some other Patton records, but when it does click, the results are remarkable; it's worthy addition to a funky soul-jazz collection. Joint Control (5:47) Riverboat Records is delighted and proud to be releasing Joint Control whose 13 songs wonderfully embody the fruits of that friendship, capturing the two great artists and consummate guitarists performing together live and in the studio. The album is all the more poignant because it represents the final recordings by John Renbourn, the final tracks made just days before his death on 26 March 2015 from a heart attack at his home in Hawick in the Scottish borders. At the time of John's death, Joint Control was almost entirely finished. The pair had been working together since the start of the year in a small studio, about an hour from John's Hawick home. Alongside the sheer artistry of their playing you can't but escape the warmth of the camaraderie permeating these performances. Most of the songs are drawn from a repertoire honed through their touring together since 2012; the only original composition, Wizz's instrumental 'Balham Moon', was recorded at the insistence of John, who also gave it a title. Of course, many of the songs date back to that extraordinary period of the 1960s when Wizz and John first met, reflecting the ideas and techniques that were shared by all the young British pickers and the influences which neither Wizz nor John would have hesitated to acknowledge - Big Bill Broonzy, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Josh White and Davy Graham. Joint Control is fundamentally steeped in the history of British folk music in the 1960s with many songs by Wizz and John's contemporaries such as Al Jones and Archie Fisher. Another on the scene was Jackson C. Frank who first arrived in London in 1965; his most famous song, 'Blues Run The Game', was one Wizz had never got round to recording. It was only in more recent years that he started to play it, albeit it from Bert Jansch's version. Bert Jansch himself is appropriately represented on this album by no less than three performances each one bearing the hallmarks of his unique technique and great songwriting. The unreleased instrumental 'Joint Control' is an early example of the reflective, intricate filigree work that would dramatically bear fruit on 1966's Bert & John album. It was actually recorded for Jansch's It Don't Bother Me the previous year but inexplicably left off the final selection. Masterfully interpreted here by John with Wizz, it makes it's presence here all the more special and significant. The anthemic 'Strolling Down The Highway' first appeared on Jansch's debut which in the hands of Wizz and John - as eloquently dsecribed by Peter Paphides: "now sounds like a careworn validation of the bohemian aspirations parlayed by Bert and all the contemporaries for whom the guitar represented an escape route from the expectations of their forebears." The other Jansch song, 'Fresh As A Sweet Sunday Morning', from his LA Turnaround album, always provided one of the most moving moments in Wizz and John's shows together; Wizz would usually look skywards at the song's close. In the wake of John's death, this recorded version becomes even more heartfelt and moving. As much as Joint Control is steeped in the celebrated history that its two parti[beeep]nts shared, these genuinely historic recordings also sound utterly fresh and contemporary. John and Wizz had only rarely appeared on record together in the past. John produced (and played a little) on Wizz's 1972 album Right Now, as well as on 2011's Lucky The Man so we can be particularly thankful that these recordings were made. As Peter Paphides concludes: "Joint Control is a fitting testament to two musicians who never forgot the spirit of joy and exploration which made them pick up their instruments in the first place; two fires of more than fifty years standing. Storyteller (Acoustic) Anna LaPrad was born and raised in Rock Hill, South Carolina. From a young age Anna has had a deep passion for music. "Music has always been the voice of my emotions, it's how I cope with any problems that life throws at me," says Anna. At the age of ten Anna started singing in church and began taking piano lessons. At 19, Anna bought her very first guitar and soon after started singing competitively in and around Rock Hill. After winning several competitions in her home state, it started to become very clear that Anna had a gift that was very capable of taking her somewhere. After high school graduation, Anna made the decision to go to college to study psychology with big dreams in the back of her mind. While attending college Anna took classes to further her education in piano while minoring in music and found time to take guitar lessons on the side. After graduating from Winthrop University, Anna moved to Nashville to follow her dream of becoming a country singer, and immediately found work singing in Music City's legendary honky tonks. Through playing the Nashville area, Anna has already managed to build a large fan base, having people come back to watch her perform every day of their vacation. In 2011, Anna returned to her home state of South Carolina to play a concert with fellow Nashville-based country singers Randy Houser and Justin Moore. She received great response not only from the fans lined up at her merchandise booth after her performance, but also from Randy Houser, whose set followed hers. "He shook my hand and told me that I was 'No opening act.' That meant a lot to me," Anna reflects. In early 2014, Anna experienced one of her biggest accomplishments as a songwriter when a song she cowrote was featured in the movie, "Category 5," starring Burt Reynolds. The song, called "Till it Breaks My Heart," is featured prominently in the movie and also made waves nationally on the Americana music charts. Anna has recently taken a big step in her career by hiring a manager, and is currently in the studio working on her second album, set for release near the beginning of 2015. She's also playing on the road every chance she gets and is quickly growing her following all over the United States. "Who knows what will happen, I just pray about everything! I know that I was born to perform and everyday I count my blessings. I don't know what God has in store for me, but I do know that He has blessed me with such a wonderful gift and it is my job to use it as He intended. I'm definitely learning what it means to pay your dues and I wouldn't trade one single second of it for anything else in the world.
