But while most of these artists??? music changed drastically based on their location, Martinu???s compositional style consistently referenced the culture of his Czech heritage. SMALL STORMS ??? cellist Meredith Blecha-Wells??? debut record ??? contains Martinu???s duos for cello and piano from the latter half of his life, with the performances of Blecha-Wells and pianist Sun Min Kim fully embodying the folkloric sensibility and conservative style that typify the composer???s oeuvre. Blecha-Wells??? beautiful playing is especially apt at capturing Martinu???s oft-celebrated gift for melody and lyricism. Consistent with his Romantic and Neoclassicist predilections, the works featured on SMALL STORMS come from genres originating in the nineteenth century, and, in some cases, even earlier. In her variations, nocturnes, and arabesques, the cellist looks not to redefine these time-tested genres, but instead personalizes their forms within the composer???s characteristic musical language. Blecha-Wells??? rendition of Martinu???s Seven Arabesques for Cello and Piano and Nocturnes for Cello and Piano are emblematic examples of the composer???s mixture of the European Classical tradition, elements of his native Czech culture, and the influence of his contemporaries. ???Adante,??? the fourth movement of the Suite Miniature, works along these lines and sounds most heavily inspired by folk music. Conversely, ???Adante Moderato??? from Arabesque might be the most modernist, namely in its dissonance and use of irregular time signatures. Throughout SMALL STORMS, the duo???s playing blends wonderfully, no matter a passage???s virtuosity or simplicity. It should come as no surprise that Martinu???s cello writing is highlighted in this recording ??? Hamelin on this 2008 recording. The four single-movement works here -- the Berceuse, the Barcarolle, and the two Nocturnes, Op. 27 -- require a superlative technique to pull them off, but they need more of a poetic sensibility to put them across to the listener. On the other hand, the two big four-movement works -- the sonatas in B flat minor and B minor -- demand superhuman technique, but require less of a poetic sensibility. As his many previous Hyperion recordings have demonstrated, Hamelin is one heck of a technician and his performances here have a fire, passion, and charisma that recall the great pre-war Chopin players. His heroic tone and blazing attack in the sonata's opening movements is staggering, his incandescent velocity in the B flat minor Sonata's closing Presto stunning, and the scorching ferocity of his B minor Sonata's closing Presto non tanto truly overwhelming. But Hamelin is also a poet and his nuanced touch in the Berceuse, sensuous phrasing in the C sharp minor Nocturne, and evocative coloring in the Trio of the B minor Sonata's Scherzo hit the sweet spot. She became associated with Baroque repertory early in her career, but soon branched out into the operas of Mozart and later into works by Berlioz, Faur???, Debussy, and Poulenc. Born into a family with largely medical backgrounds (her father was a prominent doctor), she began singing in a choir as a child but, choosing to study English, planned to become an interpreter. In her teens, however, she shifted her focus to music and went on to win first prize for early music at the Paris Conservatory. Conductor William Christie introduced her to Baroque repertory, and in 1986 she scored her first success with him when she appeared with Les Arts Florissants under his direction. Her further notable appearances included Purcell's The Fairy-Queen at the 1989 Aix-en-Provence Festival and Lully's Pha???ton, in 1993, at the Op???ra de Lyon. The following year there her portrayal of the Countess in Mozart's Marriage of Figaro received wide acclaim and catapulted her to international stardom. By this time, too, her recordings of The Fairy-Queen and Rameau's Castor et Pollux, made several years earlier, had also garnered positive notice. In the 1996-1997 season, she sang Mary in Berlioz's L'enfance du Christ. Easily among her most notable recordings was the Ren??? Jacobs-led 1999 release of Cos??? fan tutte on Harmonia Mundi. Eli Thompson's lifelong nickname -- the byproduct of a jersey, given him by his father, with the word "lucky" stitched across the chest -- would prove bitterly inappropriate: when he was five, his mother died, and the remainder of his childhood, spent largely in Detroit, was devoted to helping raise his younger siblings. Thompson loved music, but without hope of acquiring an instrument of his own, he ran errands to earn enough money to purchase an instructional book on the saxophone, complete with fingering chart.
