That might be the best way to describe the improvising duo of saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock and drummer Tom Rainey. Small ball baseball teams win, not by home run blasts, but by putting runners in scoring position, bunting, and stealing bases. Flamboyant rarely wins the series. Confident, often understated play, is what connoisseurs of both baseball and improvised music seek. The partners in music here are also partners in life. Maybe that explains their agreeable interplay. Rainey, a longtime fixture in the jazz world, has been the foundation of diverse bands led by Tim Berne and Fred Hersch. Since he began collaborating with Laubrock, he can be found in her bands Sleeptheif, Anti-House, Ubatuba, and the Ingrid Laubrock Octet. The saxophonist joins Rainey in his trio with guitarist Mary Halvorson, and have released three stellar discs. This live recording follows the partners initial studio session And Other Desert Towns (Relative Pitch, 2014). It continues to build upon a solid infrastructure where simple gestures carry the day. The title track doesn't so much announce itself as back onto the stage. Rainey's whispered cymbal work begets the hushed tones of Laubrock's tenor. The pair build, not so much tension, as an edge. Rainey mixing his complex rhythms against the ultra-supple agility of the saxophonist's tone. As the piece hits it's zenith, you understand they will deliver your ears back, safe and sound. The longest piece, "Twenty Lanes," begins with brushes and, is that crinkled paper? The momentum inches toward sticks, then the drum, and Laubrock juxtaposes some Evan Parker-sounding lines against Rainey's off-centered sounds. Finale With this release, Sir Andrew Davis and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra round out their Ives cycle in superb form. Recordings of Ives, unlike Gershwin, by groups outside of the U.S. may still be comparatively rare, but Davis has nailed the essential diverse, dense networks of Ives' language, assisted by new performing editions and by excellent Chandos engineering in two different Melbourne venues, thereby keeping the multiple strands of the music clear. Sample the first movement of the Symphony No. 3 ("The Camp Meeting"), where Davis gives some lyricism to the chains of thirds that make up much of the material, and correctly sees them as a quiet pastoral foil to the more public marches and hymn tunes that come later. The Symphony No. 4 has a visionary sweep here that it attains in few other recordings, and part of the reason is the dreamy tones coaxed from the Melbourne Symphony Chorus by chorus master Anthony Pasquill. You get a star (or near-star) pianist in the Fourth Symphony here, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, which is unusual. But Davis has the music under enough control to bring the piano unusually far forward in the music, and to open up a whole new set of internal relationships in the work. The Orchestral Set No. 2, with its depiction of a crowd in New York hearing the news of the sinking of the Lusitania, is also haunting and seems to acquire new relevance. The electronics are back, for Ponty splits his time between the electric violin and various synthesizers and sequencers while Abdou M'Boup and Sydney Thiam add African percussion, which often takes a back seat to the electronics as the rhythmic basis for the music. This time, though, the material Ponty has composed isn't as compelling as it had been in the past; at times, Ponty sounds like he is very competently treading water (though "Blue Mambo" has a compelling groove). Yet despite all of the changes Ponty has put himself through, his music still has a Continental elegance that cannot be mistaken for that of anyone else. -- Richard S. The idea may seem overly ambitious, but Anderson fills the record with enough magical moments to delight fans of Yes' mystic side. The music is written and performed almost entirely by Anderson, who dubs vocals, plays guitar and harp, and adds percussion and the occasional synthesizer to flesh out his ideas so that at no point does the music lose its spellbinding effect for lack of sonic detail. Olias of Sunhillow is faithful to the spirit of Yes, though decidedly more airy than that band's visceral style -- its closest comparison would be Fragile's "We Have Heaven" or Going for the One's "Wonderous Stories" (which was clearly influenced by this record) on the vocal tracks, and Vangelis on the instrumental tracks. Although the album is effective in its entirety, "Sound Out the Galleon," "Olias (To Build the Moorglade)," and "Solid Space" are some of the more memorable excerpts. The arrangements incorporate elements of the four tribes of Sunhillow, the most noticeable being Oriental elements that prefigure Vangelis' own China (especially on the opening "Ocean Song"). While there are several songs that could have easily fit in Yes' own catalog, and the lyrics continue to mine the mystical musings that Yes fans had come to enjoy, Olias of Sunhillow is not the missing Yes album some might hope it to be, though it does deliver on the promise that the Jon & Vangelis collaborations seemed to hold. Brueder At the tail end of 2016, Giegling released a fine EP of remixes of tracks from Kettenkarussell's 2014 debut album, Easy Listening. It seemed like a strange move at the time (even if the remixes were excellent), but thanks to the appearance of this sophomore album now makes perfect sense. As follow-ups go, Insecurity Guard is rather impressive.
