Her repertory is primarily of the Romantic era and later, with an emphasis on recent classics. After establishing a solid career in Japan, she came to international acclaim with a third place finish in the Leeds International Piano Competition of 1987. This led to her attracting a large following in the United Kingdom, resulting in her decision to spend half of her professional life in Europe. She has appeared with all the major orchestras of the British Isles, including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Philharmonic, Philharmonia, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the Hall?? Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic, and the Orchestra of St. John's Smith Square. In Europe she has appeared with the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, the Tapiola Orchestra (Finland), and the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra. She also broadcasts regularly on the Japanese television networks NHK and Nippon Television, and has toured extensively with the NKH Symphony Orchestra. She frequently appears also on the BBC. She is a well-regarded accompanist, particularly known for frequent appearances with Korean violinist Dong-Suk Kang. She is an exclusive artist for the major independent Swedish classical label BIS. The Times of London chose her recording of the second and third Rachmaninov concertos as one of the best releases of 1997, and her account of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition won a Critics' Choice Award. Although Farrell gets in a few good spots on tenor, soprano and flute, the strictly for-the-money arrangements of Trevor Lawrence and the excess of musicians sinks this effort. The version of Stevie Wonder's "Another Star" is dominated by dull "background" vocalists; most songs have instantly dated funk played by the rhythm section, and the talents of keyboardists Herbie Hancock and Victor Feldman are wasted. Only a three-and-a-half-minute unaccompanied tenor solo on "Come Rain or Come Shine" by Farrell still sounds good 20 years later. Jocelyn Brown) (12" Mix) (6:35) While this doesn't cover the early years of Joe Bataan's career (there's nothing pre-1973 here), this Japanese release covers a large portion of the hallmark moments that span the fruitful career of Bataan. Opening up with his arrangement of Gil Scott-Heron's classic "The Bottle" is a most obvious choice; following that with the sizzling "Latin Strut" provides a deadly one-two combination that gets things rolling in a very intense way and proves unquestionably why Bataan is a godfather of the Salsoul sound (just as much as Vincent Montana). From there it's a chronologically erratic journey through the man's more club-favored hits, all of which came originally from the Salsoul imprint. Boogie gems such as "Sadie (She Smokes)" (featuring both the single and 12" mixes featuring Jocelyn Brown) and "Latin Lover" make notable appearances. And while including the 7" version of "Rap-O Clap-O" is a smart move, if anything for its historical significance (it's a single some consider to be one of the first introductions of rap music to Europe), one has to question why on earth "Ling Ching Tong" was included, as it's simply one of the most awful songs ever issued on Salsoul. Allegro con brio While their name derives from Schubert's song Der Wanderer, D. 493, and their sympathies lie with German Romanticism in general, the Trio Wanderer has performed a broad range of works lying outside the Germanic sphere, including compositions by Smetana, Dvor??k, Saint-Sa??ns, Debussy, Bart??k, Martinu, Copland, Messiaen, and many others, including contemporary composers. Of course, this popular piano trio has lived up to the spirit of its name, too, with regular performance of works by Beethoven, Hummel, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Brahms, and other German Romantics, not to mention those who augured Romanticism like Haydn and Mozart. What is unusual about the group is it is French, not German, and it performs music with a keen sense for its idiom, whether German, French, Czech, American, or whatever. The Trio Wanderer has performed at the world's most prestigious venues, from Milan's Teatro alla Scala and London's Wigmore Hall to Washington's Library of Congress and Tokyo's Kioi Hall. It has made recordings for a variety of labels, including Sony Classical, Harmonia Mundi, Chant du Monde Capriccio, and others. The Trio Wanderer was formed at the Paris Conservatoire National Sup??rieur de Musique in 1987. The members of the Trio were students there: Vincent Coq (piano), Jean-Marc Phillips-Varjab??dian (violin), and Rapha??l Pidoux (cello). Though each had already received advanced training, its most important studies in chamber music came in the years 1987-1991 under Jean-Claude Pennetier, Janos Starker, and Menahem Pressler. In 1988 the Trio Wanderer won the Munich-based ARD Competition and two years later captured first prize at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition in the U.S. It quickly gained an international reputation and began touring across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Probably its most important early recordings were the Mendelssohn trios (1995) and the Dvor??k and Smetana trios (1996), both issued on Sony Classical. The group began recording for Harmonia Mundi in 1999 and thereafter turned out CDs of the Beethoven Triple Concerto; trios by Brahms, Mendelssohn, and Saint-Sa??ns; and many more. In August 2002 the Trio Wanderer debuted at the Salzburg Festival to critical acclaim, and returned there in 2004 and 2006. The group regularly appeared on European television during this period, including in a film about it made by ARTE that was broadcast on French and German television in June 2003.
