Zeni Bea ( 4:09) 13. #Knowingishalfthebattle (Snarky) (Matthew Evans Remix) ( 1:05) On paper, jazz pianist Orrin Evans returns to his childhood roots and all the branches of influence that accompany it to inspire the thematic forces of his next Smoke Sessions record, #knowingishalfthebattle. In reality, the listening experience provides so much more. "Knowing is half the battle" comes from a 1980s children's cartoon, "G.I. Joe," and it's a saying the Philly musician is fond of repeating during pivotal moments in his life. The fruits of such inspiration lead Evans inward, as he relies on instinct and a sense of improvisation in every one of his original and originally designed compositions. Enabling the improvisational instincts to flourish are two of the world's finest examples, guitarists Kevin Eubanks and Kurt Rosenwinkel - also from Philadelphia. Eubanks and Rosenwinkel flavor Evans' thematic scope with just the right amount of verve with open-minded absorption, gathering the inspiration from out there and within. "They're two guitarists, but they're two people who have taken the guitar information and translated it in their own way," Evans described in a recent press release from DL Media. "One uses a pick, one doesn't; one uses a volume pedal more than the other, one plays with more effects on their sound, one is coming from Wes Montgomery and the other is coming from a different point; but they're both taking the information they were given and doing something different with it." The album has Evans also playing with bassist Luques Curtis, borrowing his baby girl's cries for her special number "Zeni Bea," returning vocalist M'Balia, drummer Mark Whitfield Jr., and saxophonist Caleb Wheeler Curtis. #knowingishalfthebattle is Evans' third album from Smoke Sessions Records, a more than suitable follow-up to last November's The Evolution Of Oneself. It's also his way of imparting his own life lessons in his music. "We're taught that with knowledge comes power. Which is true, but we never really realize that with knowledge comes responsibility," Evans explained in that press release. "Then we have to figure out how to forget. When you let go of everything that you've been taught, the possibilities of what can happen on the bandstand are endless." Evans and his recording band let go of everything to jam their hearts out on instrumental and vocal compositions mostly cooked up by these original artists. M'Balia's loose, on-key vocals in David Bowie's "Kooks" keeps the melodically inclined happy, while the totally instrumental "You Don't Need A License To Drive," taken from Evans' playwright dad, gives the jazzheads what they most desire, lots of funked-up chordal nodules to vibe off. Evans displays originality of thought that pushes traditional jazz to the outer limits, into a kind of free form that encompasses more than the stagnant, meditative New Age class and the classicist-abstaining, experimental world music followers, where anything goes as long as it's pregnant with possibility. The slow-moving but not at all monotonous "Heavy Hangs The Head That Wears The Crown" by Caleb Wheeler Curtis fulfills the promise of both extremes, giving Eubanks and Rosenwinkel plenty of art room to create on the spot. That's because he fits the stereotypical image many of them have of the American musician: he's tall, wears cowboy boots and has a deep voice with a Southern accent. However, Dykes does not carry a gun, and though he looks rough and tough, he's actually an incredibly peaceful and intelligent musician, and a veteran at working a crowd in a blues club or a festival. While Dykes still has a sizeable American audience owing to his albums for Columbia Records, he still spends a good portion of his touring year at festivals and clubs around Europe. Omar Kent Dykes was born in 1950, in McComb, MS, the same town from which Bo Diddley hails. He first set foot into neighborhood juke joints at age 12 and after he'd been playing guitar for a while, he went back into the juke joint. After graduating from high school, Dykes lived in Hattiesburg and Jackson, MS, for a few years before relocating to Austin in 1976. He'd heard the blues scene in Texas was heating up. At that time, Stevie Ray Vaughan was still playing with Paul Ray & the Cobras. By the early '80s, Omar & the Howlers had gained a solid reputation for their invigorating live shows. They also released two albums on independent labels, Big Leg Beat (1980), followed four years later by I Told You So. Among white blues musicians, Dykes is truly one of a kind, a fact Columbia Records recognized in the mid-'80s when they signed Omar & the Howlers. Unfortunately, it was a fleeting relationship at best. After releasing Hard Times in the Land of Plenty (1987) and Wall of Pride (1988) the band was dropped when the company was bought by Sony. While it was inconvenient, it didn't stop Dykes. His post-1990 output has been nothing short of extraordinary. Starting in 1991, Omar & the Howlers recorded three discs for Rounder/Bullseye Blues: Live at Paradiso (1991), followed by Blues Bag and Courts of Lulu (both in 1992). In 1995, they switched to the Austin, TX-based Watermelon Records and released Muddy Springs Road (1995), World Wide Open (1996), and Southern Style (1997). After 15 years of dealing with record contracts, Dykes needed a break from being tied down to one particular label for any length of time. Since then, he and the Howlers have released excellent discs on Discovery (Monkey Land) (1997) Black Top (Swing Land) (1999), Blind Pig (Big Delta) (2002), and Ruf Records (Boogie Man) (2004). Olgierd Dokalski - a musician, a composer and an improviser. A self-taught trumpeter. A cybernetic specialist, and a cultural anthropology aficionado. Born in Warsaw in 1983. The founder and leader of Daktari - a quintet inspired by the aesthetics of postrock, folk, and avant-garde jazz. With the Polish-Israeli-Belgian quartet nor cold established in 2012, Olgierd interpreted Sephardic songs originating from the early twentieth-century Balkans. Olgierd also co-operates with kIRk, Msza ??wiÄ?ta w Altonie and Warsaw Improvisers Orchestra with whom he has released eight albums for the labels such as Multikulti Project, Asfalt Records and Requiem Records. On April 5, 2016 the Kaiser S??ze Foundation is releasing Olgierd's first solo album entitled 'Mirza Tarak' that showcases his interests in cultural studies and genealogy. This is what the artist writes about the album: 'I have decided to record "Mirza Tarak" inspired by the history of Jakub Murza Buczacki, of Tarak coat of arms, who set off for his Hajj at the end of the eighteen century influenced by the events of the Targowica Confederation. Buczacki was one of the few Polish Tatars (the first from the Southern Podlasie) who undertook the pilgrimage to Mecca. What have I found so interesting in this story? Why have I decided to translate it into music? When The Rain Falls: Clanaan, Pt. 6 UK band NTH ASCENSION was formed in 2009, originally using the moniker Nth Degree, and solidified as a band unit in 2010. An initial demo was released in 2011, and in 2014 they signed to UK label Sonic Vista for the release of their official debut album "Ascension of Kings". In 2016 they left their former label to sign up for US label Melodic Revolution Records, who released their sophomore production "In Fine Initium". Nth Ascension is very much an English band, exploring landscapes and sounds that were invented and developed on the British Isles. Melodic, powerful progressive rock is the name of the game here, and then by and large explored inside a neo progressive general context. Their take on the genre is one that relies heavily on alternating, contrasting arrangements and a striking lead vocalist further enhancing the dramatic aspects of the compositions. It's also a take on this style that has something of a steely edge to it at times, unlike the more pop/rock oriented artists you'll also encounter inside this general sphere of reference. For some distinct similarities, I suspect the sound explored by later day Pendragon is a fairly good comparison. Majestic, powerful passages sporting firm guitar riffs and one or more layers of keyboards is the staple for the harder edged passages in these compositions, at times in arrangements with stronger similarities to AOR style hard rock, at other times, especially when the keyboard is less prominent, comparisons can be made toward Canadian powerhouse trio Rush as well. And on a few occasions the sheer intensity of those more powerful passages close in on the gentler side of classic progressive metal if not in scope then at least in a sound that is rich, powerful and striking. Offsetting these riff and keyboards powered sections are sequences of a more delicate nature, where plucked careful guitars, wandering piano motifs, crying style guitar solo runs and keyboard textures of a more ethereal character all have their place. The combination of these two types of at times starkly contrasting themes and arrangements works really well, and the contrast aspect is explored in an effective and striking manner throughout this album. The subtly theatrical, dramatic lead vocals of Alan Taylor is a good fit for these compositions, and his vocal style and delivery does add something of a rock opera spirit to some of these cuts, giving rise to associations towards some of Clive Nolan's exploits in that specific department. The aforementioned lead vocals may be something of a divisive aspect of this album however, as this may be just a bit too melodramatic for some, and the mix and production also gives this production a slightly closed in sound that may not be universally appealing. Paint It Blue is dedicated to Adderley with Landgren performing five songs associated with the altoist plus seven originals that pay tribute to Cannonball's bands. Paint It Blue music CDs Some of the music is in the soul-jazz vein while other tunes (particularly the originals) are more modern, even incorporating a little bit of rap in a couple places. Paint It Blue songs Landgren is a fine trombonist (sometimes a little reminiscent of Wayne Henderson) and he manages to keep up with Michael and Randy Brecker, who in this situation are superior supportive soloists.
