Sheila E. & Peter Michael Escovedo) Smooth jazz guitarist Ray Obiedo was born and raised in Richmond, California, where as a child he frequently traveled to nearby San Francisco to take in free concerts by the likes of the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Cream; still, he did not pick up the guitar until age 17, also drawing considerable influence from acts including James Brown, Miles Davis, and Earth, Wind & Fire. At the outset of his career, Obiedo regularly shifted between jazz and R&B, working with a variety of artists including Herbie Hancock, Julian Priester, and Sheila E.; he also led the fusion unit Kick as well as the rock outfit Rhythmus 21. After signing to Windham Hill, Obiedo made his solo debut with 1989's Perfect Crime, followed two years later by Iguana; with 1993's Sticks and Stones, he reached the Top Ten on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz charts. I had ditched the band and was playing almost exclusively solo acoustic. I wanted to made an acoustic album, quick and easy. Together with a few of my friends, we went to Guido's South Studio in Nashville, TN. There was Mark Robinson who played dobro and acoustic guitar, Dan Seymore on upright bass and S. Javier Jones on mandolin. It was much like back in the day. I just went in with my guitar and sang a handful of new songs and a couple older ones that never saw the light of day. It was written by Giancarlo Bigazzi, Steve Piccolo and Raf. The song was covered the same year by American singer Laura Branigan. Her version first hit #1 in Germany on June 15, 1984. Raf's version first hit #1 in Italy on June 23, 1984. Born Thomas Moen Hermansen and based in Oslo, Norway, he initially made a name for himself as Prins Thomas in the mid-2000s in collaboration with Lindstr?¸m. The two Norwegian producers at first teamed up for the Further into the Future EP (2004) on Lindstr?¸m's Feedelity label before releasing the trend-setting full-length album Lindstr?¸m & Prins Thomas (2005) on Eskimo Recordings. Also in 2005, Thomas released an eponymous full-length album under the Major Swellings moniker on Noid Recordings and founded a label of his own, Full Pupp. In addition to releasing on Full Pupp the work of similarly styled space disco producers, most notably Todd Terje, he released EPs of his own such as Goettsching (2005) and Fehrara (2006). Meanwhile, he quickly became an in-demand remixer (for instance, the Justus K??hncke vs. Prins Thomas EP on Kompakt, Elan [2007]) and DJ (the double-disc Cosmo Galactic Prism mix album [2007] on Eskimo Recordings). As his profile rose in stature -- along with that of the entire space disco movement, whose popularity extended well beyond the electronic dance music community -- Thomas joined the globetrotting DJ circuit and revived his celebrated partnership with Lindstr?¸m for a remix album, Reinterpretations (2007), and follow-up full-length effort, Lindstr?¸m & Prins Thomas II (2009). He also kept active with his label, releasing a succession of EPs and the double-disc label sampler Full Pupp Presents the Greatest Tits, Vol. 1 (2008). Following countless collaborations, EP releases, and involvement in remixes and other people's projects, Thomas focused on releasing his own albums, beginning with a self-titled record in 2010, Prins Thomas II in 2012, and III in 2014, all released on his own Full Pupp label. Brother Ted (1:30) Bakin' Phat is a four piece blues band kicking it old school, covering the greats like Little Walter, William Clarke, Little Charlie and the Nightcats, and Hollywood Fats, with a hefty number of originals thrown into the mix. The band first hit the scene in 2012 quickly taking the Inland Northwest by storm and were awarded Best New Band by the Inland Empire Blues Society. They continued on a roll in 2013 picking up the Best Band award for the IEBS as well as Best Guitar Player, Best Drummer, Best Harmonica and Best Vocalist with a nomination for Best Bass Player. The band was a representative of the Washington Blues Society in the International Blues Challenge competition in Memphis in 2014. It was an amazing experience for them. Bakin' Phat competed against 120 blues bands from all over the world, and although they didn't win they represented very well and were highly regarded, garnering much attention and positve reviews. The band took a hiatus at the end of 2014 after guitarist Dennis Higgins moved on to other opportunities but, as luck would have it, award winning guitarist Patrick Coast stepped in and the band continues to show why they are one the Northwest's premier blues bands. 2015 finished with another Best Blues Band award and 2016 is off to another amazing start with many great bookings.
