"Darlin' Angel Eyes" and "The Rose of England" are minor classics in the Lowe canon, while his cover of John Hiatt's "She Don't Love Nobody" and the revival of the rockabilly standard "7 Nights to Rock" keep the album moving. There's A Queen In Me (6:24) A fiery singer whose music encompasses both contemporary blues and Southern soul, Nellie Tiger Travis was born in the early '60s in Mound Bayou, Mississippi. Travis was primarily raised by her grandmother, who was a minister and sang in the church. Several other members of Travis' family were singers and musicians, and she began singing in church services when she was five years old. In her teens, Travis parti[beeep]ted in beauty pageants, and was homecoming queen when she graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in 1979. While Travis considered a career in acting, her love of music won out, and she moved to Los Angeles in hopes of launching her career. There, Travis sang with Top 40 groups, but grew disillusioned with the politics of the music business. In 1992, she left Los Angeles for Chicago, where she thought she would be living temporarily as she looked after her ailing mother. Travis ended up staying, and in 1995 she was booked for a show at the well-known Windy City blues venue Kingston Mines. While she previously had little experience with the blues, She soon took to the music, and found a mentor in Chicago blues queen Koko Taylor. In 2000, Travis was talking with friends about how she needed a nickname; someone suggested "Tiger," saying it fit her tough but feminine personality, and the name stuck. Within a few years, Travis was a regular attraction on the Chicago blues circuit, she shared stages with some of the biggest artists on the scene (including Buddy Guy, Bobby Rush, Otis Clay, and Little Milton), and she was named "Entertainer of the Year" in a reader's poll by the Chicago weekly newspaper New City. In 2000, Travis released her debut album, I Got It Like That, through her Tiger Belle label; the same year, she recorded a collaborative album with Japanese guitarist Shun Kikuta, Heart and Soul. As Southern soul became a larger part of Travis' repertoire, she released 2005's Wanna Be with You, which fused Chicago blues influences with contemporary soul tropes. 2008's I'm a Woman featured a radio hit in the song "Slap Yo' Weave Off," which gained a loyal following in the South. In 2009, Travis' mentor Koko Taylor died; she performed at Taylor's funeral, and included a song written in her honor, "Queen of the Blues," on 2009's I'm in Love with a Man I Can't Stand. Travis wrote another song her honor, "Koko," which appeared on her 2011 album I'm Goin' Out Tonight. In 2013, Travis scored another Southern soul hit with "Mr. Sexy Man," which inspired a line dance popular in Southern soul venues. Good Rockin' Tonight (5:43) Ever heard of singer/harmonicist Peder Nande? How 'bout guitarist Carsten Larrson? Or drummer Martin Bode? Bassist Morten Burup? I thought not. And more's the pity. 'Cause collectively the aforementioned individuals comprise Nande & The Big Difference, one of the finest jump blues outfits to hit my CD player so far this year. But they're from Denmark, and to the best of my knowledge have never made it to our shores. Again, more's the pity. Augmented by rollicking piano and moody organ work courtesy of guest Peter Lapiki, Nande & The Big Difference have crafted a fine platter, for the most part solidly in the west coast tradition; yet, as they themselves say in the liner notes, they don't want to find themselves in the 'retro-trap.' Hence a varied playlist that borrows from what's come before, with the disc's fifteen tracks divided almost equally between covers (eight) and originals. The former include Dave Bartholomew's "I Can't Stop It," "She's A Good 'Un" from the pen of Otis Rush (which could also serve as a capsule summary of the disc), "Okie Dokie Stomp," Willie Dixon's "Good Understanding," and one from R.J. Mischo. There are a pair from Leiber/Stoller (the classic "Kansas City" and the little-known "One Bad Stud"), and Roy Brown's "Good Rockin' Tonight" provides a fitting closer. The originals, all credited to the band as a whole, fit perfectly into the playlist, with a playful sense that shows these guys know it's all supposed to be fun - hence titles like "Don't Count Your Chickens," "Duckin' And Divin'," and the (presumably) ironic "Kiss Your Feet." Instrumental contributions are first-rate throughout; as with songwriting credits, everyone works together to create a seamless ensemble sound. Mr. Larrson displays an admirable economy and great tone, while Mr. Nande proves equally adept at both chromatic and diatonic harmonica; again, there's nothing fancy, nothing flashy in his playing, but it's always spot on. Which brings us to the question of vocals. The blues are hard enough to sing (think of how many otherwise great discs have been irredeemably marred by weak vocals). And whether fair or not, too strong an accent can render a disc too strange for many tastes. Happily, Mr. Nande has almost no discernable trace, and is thoroughly convincing as a result. While the West Coast influence is prominent in the band's sound, they refuse to be pigeonholed too tightly, and there's lots of Chicago in the mix as well; if one's looking for comparisons, perhaps the most apt is transplanted Minnesotan (sp?) R. J. Mischo, who, coincidentally, contributes liner notes to the project. But this isn't one of those soundalike groups unable to escape their influences; there may not be anything terribly innovative or earth shattering here, but the boys definitely have their own sound. Tejanos (5:02) Son of jazz-rock fusion guitar legend Larry Coryell and author/actress Julie Coryell, contemporary soul blues artist Murali Coryell grew up surrounded by great music - by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis and Carlos Santana. Murali began playing drums at age 8 and continued through junior high school. He started playing guitar after discovering the blues in his early teens. "I was into the music of Led Zeppelin, particularly a minor blues tune called 'Since I've Been Loving You'. My dad told me if I wanted to hearsome REAL blues to get B.B. King's 'Live At The Regal' which to this day, I consider one of the greatest recordings ever made. The emotion and sadness in B.B. King's voice and guitar really spoke to me. That's When I first picked up a guitar." He took lessons for a while but picked up most of what he learned from listening to the music of other blues guitar greats...besides B.B., from early Clapton, Albert Collins, Jimi Hendrix and Albert King. The big turning point in Murali's musical career came at age 15 when he attended the National Guitar Summer Workshop in Connecticut. "For the first time in my life I got serious about my music. I started playing all the time. I got into jazz." He joined a jazz ensemble at college, studied classical guitar and graduated with a degree in music theory and composition. He founded a soul/blues band, The Ambassadors, in upstate New York in the late 80s. The band quickly became a regional favorite in New York's Hudson Valley area. In the summer of '94, while a faculty member at the Guitar Workshop, Murali met Duke Robillard who was teaching a master class. Robillard heard me sing at a concert and asked to sit in with my band. He called me a month later and hired me as second guitarist for his upcoming world tour. He featured me on a couple of vocal tunes, Ray Charles' 'I Got A Woman' and Albert King's 'The Hunter'". Soon after, Murali was signed by the fledgling Big Mo Records label as a solo artist resulting in his Stax/Volt influenced debut CD, "Eyes Wide Open" In 1999 Murali recorded "2120" for Marshall Chess' CZYZ label. Rolling Stone magazine named Murali "One promising new hound". Since that time he's released several albums including 2003's "Strong As I Need To Be", 2005's "The Future Of Blues", the solo acoustic album "Don't Blame It On Me" in 2007, 2008's "The Same Damn Thing" and 2009's "Sugar Lips" as well as a collaboration with his father Larry and brother Julian "The Coryells" (2000/Chesky Records).
