Their particular genius is in continually finding new ways to explore these traditions. Their 2013 set World Boogie is Coming, titled after one of their father's more famous expressions (and he had more than a few!), was built around field recordings of north Mississippi legends Othar Turner and R.L. Burnside; in 2019 they released Up and Rolling, inspired by photos of area musicians from a lost roll of film taken by Wyatt McSpadden. For Set Sail the brothers, along with bassist Jesse Williams, have befriended another second-generation musician, singer Lamar Williams Jr.-son of the Allman Brothers bassist (no relation to Jesse). According to Luther Dickinson, being sons of famous musicians was their bonding connection: "I believe music is a form of communion with our loved ones and conjuring this vibe with members of musical families can be inspirational. We never had to figure out what it means and takes to be a musician." The primeval voodoo rhythms that are in the brother's DNA drive "Rabbit Foot" where Williams sings, "Don't spell my name on a stone/ Give me an unmarked grave and a box of bones/ When my spirits free to roam." "See the Moon," an upbeat, '70s-inspired funk groove is a welcome new flavor with Sharisse Norman joining Williams on vocals. The history-conscious brothers bring in 82-year-old Stax veteran William Bell to convincingly sing "Never Want to Be Kissed," his ode to a final kiss with a dying lost love. In general though, this is not one of the brothers' more distinguished collections of originals. While the playing is tight, Williams is an uninspiring amateur, more of a talker than a singer with little range, and often lacking any emotion. "Juicy Juice" whose title screams funk, is set to an elastic '70s rhythm but is oddly low key and also handicapped by silly lyrics about a "classy city stoner chick" whose "juice is the truth." Williams flatlines in the slow "Bumpin'," sounding as if he's reading from a page. Few of the tunes are memorable, particularly closer "Authentic," a righteous plea for sanity and respect; with lyrics about "guns in the streets" it's is an overly simplistic message song with Williams' sing-talking over a weak musical foundation: "On the American tree of music roots/ Each branch bears a different fruit/ Music runs in the blood of our family in/ Music and love is what I believe." Met de geweldige titel Abusement Park blijft Lordi op dit hoofdstuk uit de Lordiversity-boxset dicht bij huis. De band bedient zich van glam-, sleaze- en hardrock in de stijl van onder meer W.A.S.P. en Twisted Sister. Geen onbekende invloeden wanneer je vaker naar Lordi luistert. While the duo's songs approach this topic with introspection ('I am a stranger to body') as well as a sociological perspective ('I am alien to this world'), to a certain extent the album is also a story of a search for identity: 'Who am I and how do I fit into this world?' Musically, this is reflected in a space that seems more boundless than AUA's 2020 debut, "I Don't Want It Darker". New possibilities open up. There is more at stake. All the more astonishing that this multifaceted work was once again recorded in DIY fashion. Before production started, Fabian Bremer and Henrik Eichmann went hunting for strange and unusual electronic instruments, seeking inspiration and new sounds which would expand upon AUA's already eclectic mix of explosive Motorik beats, Carpenter-esque arpeggios, and surf guitars. Throughout "The Damaged Organ" Bremer and Eichmann play virtually every instrument while taking turns on vocals. "Islands Song" also features Annika Henderson (Anika, Exploded View), whose voice adds a unique element to the otherworldly nature of the track, the modulating synthetic melodies of which bring Mort Garson's "Plantasia" to mind. Swampwater - Swampwater 1971 (2021) 192-24 Country: USA Genre: Rock,Folk,Country Format: FLAC (*tracks) Quality: Lossless [192 kHz/24 bit] Time: 28:31 Full Size: 1.21 GB Swampwater's 1970 debut stands alongside Sweetheart of the Rodeo, Guilded Palace of Sin, Poco's debut, the Everly Brothers' Roots and Bradley's Barn as one of the best country-rock records ever. Founder, Gib Guilbeau had a strong Bakersfield resume prior to forming Swampwater. Guilbeau and Gene Parsons had released a few early country-rock singles in the late 60's as well as an album which eventually saw light of day in 1970 (although recorded in 1968-). The two recruited Clarence White in 1968 to record the legendary Nashville West album. This album has a good live feel and is highlighted by some of Clarence White's best playing which was always breathtaking and revolutionary. Eventually Swampwater formed and started out as Linda Ronstadt's backing group in the late 60's. Eric White, Clarence's brother was also in the band and prior to forming Swampwater had been in the excellent Kentucky Colonels. Swampwater made two distinct albums in the early 70's without Linda Ronstadt's involvement. The above album was different than many notable country rock acts of the time for adding cajun and swamprock elements. The album opens and closes with two certified country-rock classics, Louisiana Woman and Big Bayou. Guilbeau had recorded the classy Louisiana Woman with both Nashville West and on his 1970 album with Parsons, though the version heard on Swampwater is the best. Big Bayou is a hard rocking, white hot country song with pretty fiddle that has been covered by many popular artists inlcuding Rod Stewart. Other songs like the acoustic flavored Man From New Orleans are highlighted by beautiful harmonies and a tear in your beer ambience. Swampwater's musicianship is high caliber and Guilbeau's lyrics are always first-rate and thoughtful. Great songs like Kathleen, Desperation's Back Again (supposedly an Everly Brothers homage with great down and out lyrics) and River People are beautifully arranged and display superior craftsmanship. It's really a wall of greatness, with each song just as good as the next. Swampwater mastered all the rural styles from cajun to folk-rock but just never received the breaks they so justly deserved. Their members were slugging it out in bars playing this sort of music years before anyone else had thought to do so.
