Featuring Yanni Papadopoulos and Alexi Papadopoulos of Stinking Lizaveta on guitar and bass, EDO's Pete Wilder also on guitar and drummer Grant Calvin Weston, who's worked with James "Blood" Ulmer, Billy Martin and hosts of others in varying jazz, funk and fusion contexts in addition to performing solo, they don't skimp on pedigree, but the hour-long Wail is of course about more than the stuff they've done before. The bounce and surging lead guitar of "Family Man" and the jangly underpinning of swing in preceding opener "He Knows What it Is," building to a fullness of tone and then pulling back to make room for the next solo, the jab-throwing rhythm of "Symmetry" and the way its burgeoning psychedelic feel give over to the nine-minute stretch of "Astronomy"a and the ensuing languid hypnocraft in the first half there - rest assured, they grow freakier as they go - all of these elements come together early on the record to establish a sonic personality with the confidence to go where it wants and follow improvisational whims, but also to build a conversation between the players involved and dive into the chemistry there. While a soft rock album may not be the first thing one would expect from Bobby GIllespie and Jehnny Beth, it's actually quite easy to find a throughline to this material from both the classic-rock slow jams in Primal Scream's catalog and the balladry found on Jehnny Beth's 2016 solo release. Still, when one discovers the Utopian Ashes aren't that of a civilization destroyed by consumerism and conservatism, but instead of a once-blissful relationship now on its last legs, it is something of a pleasant surprise. With a band lineup that's basically Primal Scream plus Jehnny Beth and her longtime collaborator Johnny Hostile, Utopian Ashes feels both connected to and entirely apart from any of their previous output, with strings and brass and lush guitar work providing the construction materials for songs that are as moody as they are heartfelt. The first verse on the album has the line "I don't even love you anymore," and the refrain repeats throughout the song; amazingly, the ache and despondency devolves even further from there, with lyrics that are conceptually strong and character-driven but not confessional. Both artists paint a picture of this dissolute relationship from a unique perspective-the man's is self-pitying, entitled, and woeful, while the woman's is that of long-suffering optimism. Politics are largely avoided here; "English Town" uses small-minded provincialism as a stand-in for the doldrums of late-stage relationships, and that's about it. Instead, most of the lyrics are straightforward depictions of betrayal, sadness, and thwarted redemption. Gillespie takes the lead on almost all of the songs, but when Jehnny Beth steps up, it's with a surprising plaintiveness that's deftly complementary to the mid tempo achiness that defines the album, most notably on the out-and-out mopey "Your Heart Will Always Be Broken." The album peaks with the country-tinged back-and-forth duet of "You Can Trust Me Now" and the sweeping, melodramatic "Living a Lie," a one-two punch that sounds like everything is gonna be alright between our distraught couple, only to reveal that, no, it's still a disaster. Of course, this was mainly due to the unfortunate passing of legendary guitarist Eddie Van Halen on October 6th, 2020. Now we're treated to a much more pleasing surprise with the release of his son Wolfgang's long-awaited first solo album. The term 'solo album' really takes on its full meaning here, as the recently turned thirty-year-old plays every instrumental part and has been composing the entire album completely alone since 2015. The only outside help came from producer Michael 'Elvis' Baskette (Alter Bridge, Slash feat. Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators) who took care of the impeccable sound design. But the main attraction of this album lies elsewhere: beyond the musical and vocal performance, it's the sense of melody that jumps out at you. Like Dave Grohl (a fitting comparison as both can be described as a one-man band), Wolfgang Van Halen hits the nail squarely on the head with strong songs that stick in your head after listening. Mammoth WVH turns almost every track into a potential single, impeccably sung and ready to sing along to all day long. Radio friendly? Absolutely. But these songs, with their lush vocal arrangements and spot on instrumentation, are far from shallow commercial tracks. Wolfgang has clearly understood the importance of avoiding simply following in his father's footsteps, hence why the (very accomplished) guitar solos only make occasional appearances. The multi-instrumentalist opts to explore other avenues. His experience in Tremonti has of course had a strong influence on his music, but there are many other components which may appeal to fans of alternative rock groups (in the American sense of the word) such as Queens Of The Stone Age, Sevendust and, of course, Foo Fighters. When the album flirts with hard rock, we can hear the influences of the likes of Alice In Chains or Winger's most recent productions. But, if we delve a little deeper and further back, the genetic lineage of the one-man band's music can be so clearly traced back to the "four boys in the wind" from Liverpool. The sense of how to make a hit, the sense of chorus and the perfect timing all reflect this strong Beatles influence. Mammoth was the very first name of the band Van Halen, chosen by Wolfgang for his project with the blessing of his illustrious father and the other members of the band. It's a nice tribute to his roots, but the even better tribute was starting his career with an album of this quality, made on his own, and free of any strong paternal influence. Wolfgang Van Halen owes his (predictable) success to his own talent alone and looks set to keep the mythical Van Halen name shining in his own way. The curious will come to see, but will stay to listen. The journey started (although I didn't know it at the time) on November 2, 2019 in Oakland, California, when Henry, Chris, Andy and I were recording tracks at MegaSonic studio. When I returned to Zürich, the world as we knew it soon changed drastically due to the quickly spreading Coronavirus. While it was a time to rethink the values that had governed our lives, it was also (thanks to the wonders of the internet) a disguised opportunity to record an album in lockdown. As with the first Fractal Guitar album, I owe a great deal to all the fantastic musicians who play on this album, this time especially to Jon Durant, Barry Cleveland, Andi Pupato and Markus Reuter.
