  1. Free Download Hoof Beats: How Horses Shaped Human History by William T. Taylor English | August 6th, 2024 | ISBN: 0520380673 | 360 pages | True EPUB | 26.26 MB "Hoof Beats helps readers see the drama even in the grass eating. . . . Taylor has written that too-rare work that is as authoritative as it is legible to the lay audience."-New York Times Journey to the ancient past with cutting-edge science and new data to discover how horses forever altered the course of human history. From the Rockies to the Himalayas, the bond between horses and humans has spanned across time and civilizations. In this archaeological journey, William T. Taylor explores how momentous events in the story of humans and horses helped create the world we live in today. Tracing the horse's origins and spread from the western Eurasian steppes to the invention of horse-drawn transportation and the explosive shift to mounted riding, Taylor offers a revolutionary new account of how horses altered the course of human history. Drawing on Indigenous perspectives, ancient DNA, and new research from Mongolia to the Great Plains and beyond, Taylor guides readers through the major discoveries that have placed the horse at the origins of globalization, trade, biological exchange, and social inequality. Hoof Beats transforms our understanding of both horses and humanity's ancient past and asks us to consider what our relationship with horses means for the future of humanity and the world around us. Free Download Christopher Bakken, "Honey, Olives, Octopus: Adventures at the Greek Table" English | ISBN: 0520275098 | 2013 | 256 pages | PDF | 2 MB Combining the best of memoir, travel literature, and food writing, Christopher Bakken delves into one of the most underappreciated cuisines in Europe in this rollicking celebration of the Greek table. He picks olives on Thasos, bakes bread on Crete, eats thyme honey from Kythira with one of Greece's greatest poets, and learns why Naxos is the best place for cheese in the Cyclades. Working with local cooks and artisans, he offers an intimate look at traditional village life, while honoring the conversations, friendships, and leisurely ceremonies of dining around which Hellenic culture has revolved for thousands of years. 5. Free Download David M. Luebke, "Hometown Religion: Regimes of Coexistence in Early Modern Westphalia" English | 2016 | ISBN: 0813938406 | EPUB | pages: 328 | 2.9 mb The pluralization of Christian religion was the defining fact of cultural life in sixteenth-century Europe. Everywhere they took root, ideas of evangelical reform disturbed the unity of religious observance on which political community was founded. By the third quarter of the sixteenth century, one or another form of Christianity had emerged as dominant in most territories of the Holy Roman Empire. In Hometown Religion: Regimes of Coexistence in Early Modern Westphalia, David Luebke examines a territory that managed to escape that fate―the prince-bishopric of Münster, a sprawling ecclesiastical prin[beeep]lity and the heart of an entire region in which no single form of Christianity dominated. In this confessional "no-man's-land," a largely peaceable order took shape and survived well into the mid-seventeenth century, a unique situation, which raises several intriguing questions: How did Catholics and Protestants manage to share parishes for so long without religious violence? How did they hold together their communities in the face of religious pluralization? Luebke responds by examining the birth, maturation, old age, and death of a biconfessional "regime"―a system of laws, territorial agreements, customs, and tacit understandings that enabled Roman Catholics and Protestants, Lutherans as well as Calvinists, to cohabit the territory's parishes for the better part of a century. In revealing how these towns were able to preserve peace and unity―in the Age of Religious Wars― Hometown Religion attests to the power of toleration in the conduct of everyday life. 7. Free Download Homeland: The War on Terror in American Life by Richard Beck English | September 3rd, 2024 | ISBN: 0593240227 | 592 pages | True EPUB | 2.40 MB A groundbreaking history of how the decades-long war on terror changed virtually every aspect of American life, from the erosion of citizenship down to the cars we bought and TV we watched-by an acclaimed n+1 writer "Richard Beck, like many people alive today, has spent his adult life living in the shadow of 9/11, and Homeland is a devastating inquiry into the new world that day created."-Greg Grandin, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The End of the Myth: From the Frontier to the Border Wall in the Mind of America For twenty years after September 11, the war on terror was simultaneously everywhere and nowhere. With all of the military violence occurring overseas even as the threat of sudden mass death permeated life at home, Americans found themselves living in two worlds at the same time. In one of them, soldiers fought overseas so that nothing at home would have to change at all. In the other, life in the United States took on all kinds of unfamiliar shapes, changing people's sense of themselves, their neighbors, and the strangers they sat next to on airplanes. In Homeland, Richard Beck delivers a gripping exploration of how much the war changed life in the United States and explains why there is no going back. Though much has been made of the damage that Donald Trump did to the American political system, Beck argues that it was the war on terror that made Trump's presidency possible, fueling and exacerbating a series of crises that all came to a head with his rise to power. Homeland brilliantly isolates and explores four key issues: the militarism that swept through American politics and culture; the racism and xenophobia that boiled over in much of the country; an economic crisis that, Beck convincingly argues, connects the endurance of the war on terror to at least the end of the Second World War; and a lack of accountability that produced our "impunity culture"-the government-wide inability or refusal to face consequences that has transformed how the U.S. government relates to the people it governs. To see American life through the lens of Homeland'ssweeping argument is to understand the roots of our current condition. In its startling analysis of how the war on terror hollowed out the very idea of citizenship in the United States, Beck gives the most compelling explanation yet offered for the ongoing disintegration of America's social, political, and cultural fabric. 8. Free Download Yoshikuni Igarashi, "Homecomings: The Belated Return of Japan's Lost Soldiers" English | 2016 | ISBN: 0231177704, 0231177712 | EPUB | pages: 320 | 3.0 mb Soon after the end of World War II, a majority of the nearly 7 million Japanese civilians and servicemen who had been posted overseas returned home. Heeding the call to rebuild, these veterans helped remake Japan and enjoyed popularized accounts of their service. For those who took longer to be repatriated, such as the POWs detained in labor camps in Siberia and the fighters who spent years hiding in the jungles of islands in the South Pacific, returning home was more difficult. Their nation had moved on without them and resented the reminder of a humiliating, traumatizing defeat. Homecomings tells the story of these late-returning Japanese soldiers and their struggle to adapt to a newly peaceful and prosperous society. Some were more successful than others, but they all charted a common cultural terrain, one profoundly shaped by media representations of the earlier returnees. Japan had come to redefine its nationhood through these popular images. Yoshikuni Igarashi explores what Japanese society accepted and rejected, complicating the definition of a postwar consensus and prolonging the experience of war for both Japanese soldiers and the nation. He throws the postwar narrative of Japan's recovery into question, exposing the deeper, subtler damage done to a country that only belatedly faced the implications of its loss. 13. Free Download Matthew R. Rasure, "Holy Brothers: Geography, Kinship, and Priesthood in Ancient Israel" English | ISBN: 197871128X | 2023 | 172 pages | PDF | 2 MB The history of the Israelite priesthood in the early first millennium BCE is shrouded in mystery. While images of priests, prayer, and sacrifice play a significant role in all biblical periods, reconstructing the practices and organization of the early priesthood is beset by a host of historical, chronological, and methodological problems. In 1973, Frank Moore Cross published a landmark proposal tying the history of the priesthood to the character of Moses and the establishment of the United Monarchy-the so-called "Mushite Hypothesis"-providing a historical foothold for the study of each. Building on the work of Cross, Matthew R. Rasure investigates traces of the early priesthood through narrative analysis of geography, kinship, and the memory of the characters of Moses and Aaron. Rasure posits the existence of two spectra on which different biblical voices may be positioned: a polarity between geographical center and periphery, and a polarity concerning understandings of Aaron and Moses. What emerges from these oppositions is a picture of two priestly identities active in distinct regions. The interactions between these priesthoods shape the history, politics, and cult of the United Monarchy, the Divided Monarchy, and beyond. In 1923 he transferred from the Royal Engineers to the Royal Tank Corps and quickly established himself as one of the foremost thinkers on armored warfare. By 1938 he was GOC Mobile Division, later 7th Armored Division, in Egypt. Unable to suffer fools at all, he was relieved of his command (sacked!) in 1939, retired in 1940 and became a corporal in the Home Guard. At Winston Churchill's inspired behest, he was ordered to create and command 11th Armored Division. Although he trained the new division to a very high standard, he was seen as too old to lead it in action - he was 57. Instead he was told to form 79th Armored Division and design specialized armored vehicles necessary to breach the Atlantic Wall. The Division played a major part in the D-Day landings and the subsequent campaign in NW Europe. Hobart's 'Funnies' included mine-clearing tanks, bridge-carrying tanks, flame throwers, swimming tanks and amphibious assault vehicles. Brigades and units of the Division were deployed wherever they were needed by Second (British) and First (Canadian) Armies and no major operation between Normandy and the final victory took place without them present. Percy Hobart's skills played a significant part in the final Allied victory and the lasting tribute to that vision was the adoption by all armies of the specialized 'funnies' that his Division introduced to modern warfare. This book is based on official records, published materials and personal recollections. As a work of historical scholarship, Hoax is terrific."-Robert G. Ingram, National Review "[Stater's] accounts have the compulsively fascinating quality of a true-crime podcast."-Jeffrey Collins, Wall Street Journal In 1678, a handful of perjurers claimed that the Catholics of England planned to assassinate the king. Men like the "Reverend Doctor" Titus Oates and "Captain" William Bedloe parlayed their fantastical tales of Irish ruffians, medical poisoners, and silver bullets into public adulation and government pensions. Their political allies used the fabricated Description as a tool to undermine the ministry of Thomas Lord Danby and replace him themselves. The result was the trial and execution of over a dozen innocent Catholics, and the imprisonment of many more, some of whom died in custody. Victor Stater examines the Popish Description in full, arguing that it had a profound and lasting significance on British politics. He shows how Charles II emerged from the crisis with credit, moderating the tempers of the time, and how, as the catalyst for the later attempt to deny James II his throne through parliamentary action, it led to the birth of two-party politics in England. And there is no shortage of a portrait of Ernest Hemingway together with Colonel Charles T. (Buck) Lanham; it is September 18, 1944, in Germany. Hemingway in fact was at the front first as an envoy to the Pacific Ocean, then parti[beeep]ted in patrol operations against German submarines in the Atlantic, and finally parti[beeep]ted as an "irregular" soldier in the liberation forces that landed on the Normandy coast. As of the Zoom Archives philosophy, the photographs are accompanied by accurate historical tests that provide insight into the origins of the war and its dramas, beginning with the concentration camps and ending with the suicide of the Nazi hierarchs. 21. Free Download Hitler's Tyranny: A History in Ten Chapters by Ralf Georg Reuth, Peter Lewis English | December 5, 2022 | ISBN: 1913368629 | 256 pages | PDF | 2.13 Mb A fresh, stimulating look at Adolf Hitler and his dictatorship throughout the study of ten key aspects. Hitler's tyranny is still difficult to understand today. In this book, Ralf Georg Reuth examines ten aspects of this catastrophe. Among other things, he asks: Was anti-Semitism more pronounced in Germany than elsewhere? Was Versailles really responsible for Hitler's rise and why did the Germans follow a racial fanatic like him? How did his war differ from all others before it? The disturbing answers provide an overall picture that shows Hitler was not the consequence of the depths of German history, but the result of chance, deception, and seduction. This thought-provoking new study takes aim at several of the norms of Hitler scholarship from the past forty years. Reuth interrogates and challenges a range of orthodox views on such topics as how mainstream politicians facilitated Hitler's rise to power, the Führer's infamous pact with Stalin, and the complicity of ordinary Germans in his genocidal tyranny. Eschewing a conventional chronological approach in favor of a forensic analysis of Hitler's mainsprings of action both as chancellor and military commander, Reuth portrays Hitler as the apotheosis of what he argues is a specifically German strain of militarism and imperialism, shifting the focus firmly back to the mindset and modus operandi of Hitler himself. The portrait that emerges is one of a murderous fantasist and political opportunist driven by an all-embracing ideology of racial superiority. Reuth's account courts controversy on a number of points and offers a fascinating counterpoint to much recent scholarship. 23. Free Download Hitler's People: The Faces of the Third Reich by Richard J Evans English | August 13th, 2024 | ISBN: 0593296427 | 624 pages | True EPUB | 19.13 MB Named a Most Anti[beeep]ted Book of 2024 by Foreign Policy "Evans . . . offers these eye-opening portraits of the heart of evil in an effort to understand what kind of people fell under Hitler's spell. . . . A meticulously researched, sobering look at the Nazi era and the people who helped bring its evil intents to fruition." -Kirkus Reviews (starred) Through a connected set of biographical portraits of key Nazi figures that follows power as it radiated out from Hitler to the inner and outer circles of the regime's leadership, one of our greatest historians answers the enduring question, how does a society come to carry out a program of unspeakable evil? Richard Evans, author of the acclaimed The Third Reich Trilogy and over two dozen other volumes on modern Europe, is our preeminent scholar of Nazi Germany. Having spent half a century searching for the truths behind one of the most horrifying episodes in human history, in Hitler's People, he brings us back to the original site of the Nazi movement: namely, the lives of its most important members. Working in concentric circles out from Hitler and his closest allies, Evans forms a typological framework of Germany society under Nazi rule from the top down. With a novelist's eye for detail, Evans explains the Third Reich through the personal failings and professional ambitions of its members, from its most notorious deputies-like Goebbels, the regime's propagandist, and Himmler, the Holocaust's chief architect-to the crucial enforcers and instruments of the Nazi agenda that history has largely forgotten-like the schoolteacher Julius Streicher and the actress Leni Riefenstahl. Drawing on a wealth of recently unearthed historical sources, Hitler's People lays bare the inner and outer lives of the characters whose choices led to the deaths of millions. Nearly a century after Hitler's rise, the leading nations of the West are once again being torn apart by a will to power. By telling the stories of these infamous lives as human lives, Evans asks us to grapple with the complicated nature of complicity, showing us that the distinctions between individual and collective responsibility-and even between pathological evil and rational choice-are never easily drawn. 24. Free Download Hitler's Black Chariots: The Legend & Reality of Germany's Tiger Tank in World War Two by Logan Kaine English | June 13, 2024 | ISBN: 199064497X | 289 pages | EPUB | 1.16 Mb The most feared tank of the Second World War is not a matter that is in dispute - it is the German Tiger. But there is a better question to ask - was it the most effective tank of the war? Or was it so wrapped in mythology that its true value has become obscured? This question propels this investigation into the most storied tank of the war, tracing the evolution and employment of the Tiger Tank and its successor, as well as the variants built on the same chassis - the Ferdinand, Sturmtiger, and Jagdtiger - from the sands of North Africa to the Russian steppes, and finally to the bocage of Normandy and the desperate battles within the German homeland. While the Tiger was feared by many of its opponents, it was also over-engineered and reliant on expensive materials and intensive labour to produce and maintain them, Because of this, between August 1942 and August 1944 only 1,347 were built. Through the course of his research, Kaine uncovers aspects that were either unknown or have been forgotten. In the end, we are left with a much better picture of what this fabled weapon meant to Germany's war effort.
