  4. Free Download Converts to the Real: Catholicism and the Making of Continental Philosophy by Edward Baring English | May 1, 2019 | ISBN: 067498837X | True EPUB | 504 pages | 1.2 MB In the most wide-ranging history of phenomenology since Herbert Spiegelberg's The Phenomenological Movement over fifty years ago, Baring uncovers a new and unexpected force―Catholic intellectuals―behind the growth of phenomenology in the early twentieth century, and makes the case for the movement's catalytic intellectual and social impact. Of all modern schools of thought, phenomenology has the strongest claim to the mantle of "continental" philosophy. In the first half of the twentieth century, phenomenology expanded from a few German towns into a movement spanning Europe. Edward Baring shows that credit for this prodigious growth goes to a surprising group of early enthusiasts: Catholic intellectuals. Placing phenomenology in historical context, Baring reveals the enduring influence of Catholicism in twentieth-century intellectual thought. Converts to the Real argues that Catholic scholars allied with phenomenology because they thought it mapped a path out of modern idealism―which they associated with Protestantism and secularization―and back to Catholic metaphysics. Seeing in this unfulfilled promise a bridge to Europe's secular academy, Catholics set to work extending phenomenology's reach, writing many of the first phenomenological publications in languages other than German and organizing the first international conferences on phenomenology. The Church even helped rescue Edmund Husserl's papers from Nazi Germany in 1938. But phenomenology proved to be an unreliable ally, and in debates over its meaning and development, Catholic intellectuals contemplated the ways it might threaten the faith. As a result, Catholics showed that phenomenology could be useful for secular projects, and encouraged its adoption by the philosophical establishment in countries across Europe and beyond. Baring traces the resonances of these Catholic debates in postwar Europe. From existentialism, through the phenomenology of Paul Ricoeur and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, to the speculative realism of the present, European thought bears the mark of Catholicism, the original continental philosophy. 5. Free Download Barbara Burkhardt, "Conversations with William Maxwell " English | ISBN: 1617032549 | 2012 | 256 pages | AZW3 | 2 MB Conversations with William Maxwell collects thirty-eight interviews, public speeches, and remarks that span five decades of the esteemed novelist and New Yorker editor's career. The interviews collectively address the entirety of Maxwel's literary work―with in-depth discussion of his short stories, essays, and novels including They Came Like Swallows, The Folded Leaf, and the American Book Award-winning So Long, See You Tomorrow―as well as his forty-year tenure as a fiction editor working with such luminaries as John Updike, John Cheever, Eudora Welty, Vladimir Nabokov, and J.D. Salinger. Maxwell's words spoken before a crowd, some previously unpublished, pay moving tribute to literary friends and mentors, and offer reflections on the artistic life, the process of writing, and his midwestern heritage. All retain the reserved poignancy of his fiction. The volume publishes for the first time the full transcript of Maxwell's extensive interviews with his biographer and, in an introduction, correspondence with writers including Updike and Saul Bellow, which enlivens the stories behind his interviews and appearances. 7. Free Download Convair B-36 Peacemaker: Cold War Nuclear Bomber and Largest Mass-Produced Piston-Engine Aircraft Ever Built by Graham M Simons English | July 25, 2024 | ISBN: 1526787318 | 304 pages | EPUB | 74 Mb The story of the Consolidated B-36 is unique in American aviation history. The aircraft was an interesting blend of concepts proven during the Second World War combined with budding 1950s high-tech systems. The program survived near-cancellation on six separate occasions during an extremely protracted development process. It was also the symbol of a bitter inter-service rivalry between the newly-formed US Air Force and the well-established US Navy over which of which of the two organizations would control the delivery of atomic weapons during the early years of the Cold War. Entering service in 1948, the B-36 was a remarkable design. It was the largest mass-produced piston-engine aircraft ever built, having the longest wingspan of any combat aircraft in history. Importantly, in terms of the developing Cold War at least, the B-36 was the first bomber capable of delivering any of the weapons in America's nuclear arsenal without modification. To achieve this part of its role, the Peacemaker had an operational range of 10,000 miles, being capable of intercontinental flight without refueling. It is difficult to imagine a modern aircraft remaining airborne for two days without refueling - but such missions were relatively routine for the B-36 crews. while there were, at the time of its service, questions around its flight speed, the Peacemaker flew so high that this was considered of little concern - few fighters of its era could reach the same altitudes, and operational surface-to-air missiles were still in the future. The B-36, despite its seemingly conventional appearance, pushed the state-of-the-art technology further than any other aircraft of its era. Its sheer size brought with it structural challenges, while its high-altitude capabilities led to engine cooling and associated problems. However, all of these were finally overcome, and the B-36 served well as the first 'Big Stick' of the Cold War. 10. Free Download Martin Heidegger, "Contributions to Philosophy (Of the Event) " English | ISBN: 0253001137 | 2012 | 456 pages | AZW3 | 702 KB Martin Heidegger's Contributions to Philosophy reflects his famous philosophical "turning." In this work, Heidegger returns to the question of being from its inception in Being and Time to a new questioning of being as event. Heidegger opens up the essential dimensions of his thinking on the historicality of being that underlies all of his later writings. Contributions was composed as a series of private ponderings that were not originally intended for publication. They are nonlinear and radically at odds with the traditional understanding of thinking. This translation presents Heidegger in plain and straightforward terms, allowing surer access to this new turn in Heidegger's conception of being. 11. Free Download Continuous Parameter Markov Processes and Stochastic Differential Equations (Graduate Texts in Mathematics, 299) by Rabi Bhattacharya, Edward C. Waymire English | November 17, 2023 | ISBN: 3031332946 | 521 pages | MOBI | 110 Mb This graduate text presents the elegant and profound theory of continuous parameter Markov processes and many of its applications. The authors focus on developing context and intuition before formalizing the theory of each topic, illustrated with examples. After a review of some background material, the reader is introduced to semigroup theory, including the Hille-Yosida Theorem, used to construct continuous parameter Markov processes. Illustrated with examples, it is a cornerstone of Feller's seminal theory of the most general one-dimensional diffusions studied in a later chapter. This is followed by two chapters with probabilistic constructions of jump Markov processes, and processes with independent increments, or Lévy processes. The greater part of the book is devoted to Itô's fascinating theory of stochastic differential equations, and to the study of asymptotic properties of diffusions in all dimensions, such as explosion, transience, recurrence, existence of steady states, and the speed of convergence to equilibrium. A broadly applicable functional central limit theorem for ergodic Markov processes is presented with important examples. Intimate connections between diffusions and linear second order elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations are laid out in two chapters, and are used for computational purposes. Among Special Topics chapters, two study anomalous diffusions: one on skew Brownian motion, and the other on an intriguing multi-phase homogenization of solute transport in porous media. 14. Free Download Mark E. Steinke, "Contemporary Perspectives on Air Cooling of Electronic Components" English | 2013 | ISBN: 1567003044 | PDF | pages: 63 | 4.7 mb In this book, the author discusses the roots of electronics cooling and how air cooling is still dominant over water cooling and will remain so for the near term. For over a century now, this area has been ripe with active research in many disciplines spanning heat transfer, thermodynamics, materials science, and structural engineering. Perhaps the most appealing feature of the electronics cooling field is the very multidisciplinary nature of the challenges being overcome. Unlike some other areas, the electronics cooling system designer must have knowledge of several disciplines to design and deliver the most optimal electronics cooling solution. In the future there will be a new roadmap laid out before us and there may be a time liquid cooling is required in mainstream computing. However, I see many current years where air cooling will play a critical role and must be improved to meet future needs. Laura Riding's Contemporaries and Snobs (1928) was the first volume of essays to engage critically with high modernist poetics from the position of the outsider. For readers today, it offers a compelling account-by turns personal, by turns historical-of how the institutionalization of modernism denuded experimental poetry. Most importantly, Contemporaries and Snobs offers a counter-history of the idiosyncratic, of what the institution of modernism left (and leaves) behind. With Gertrude Stein as its figurehead, the book champions the noncanonical, the "barbaric," and the undertheorized. Free Download Anirban Bhattacharjee, "Contemporaneity of the Mahabharata Narrative: Epic of the Moment" English | ISBN: 1032849568 | 2024 | 248 pages | PDF | 5 MB Notwithstanding its renowned comprehensive narrative encapsulation of the Indic culture, the Mahabharata keeps on posing a challenge to its contemporary readers: how do we relate to something over two-millennia old in today's context without freezing it in time? This volume looks at the problem from diverse periods and standpoints and shows us that this challenge is, in fact, a legacy of the Mahabharata and the responses to this challenge are what makes the text ever-contemporary to different readers of different times and positions. It traces the evolution of the Mahabharata from its inception in the fifth century BCE to twenty-first century, spanning classical Sanskrit tradition, Persian and Bengali adaptations, the Mahabharata as a serialized TV show to more recent graphic narratives. By attempting to analyse this diversity, this volume further delves into how the issues in the Mahabharata resonate across time, from the world of ancient sages to contemporary struggles of women. The essays in this book adopt a dual perspective to appreciate both the Mahabharata's historical context, its exploration of war, heroes and heroines, gender, psychology, philosophy, and its implications for the future. Nieuwenhuyse, "Containers of Change: Ancient Container Technologies from Eastern to Western Asia" English | ISBN: 9464270519 | 2023 | 286 pages | PDF | 34 MB Across Western Asia, the astonishing increase in the availability of durable ceramic containers in the seventh millennium BCE had significant societal repercussions - so much so that vital social, economic, and symbolic activities became dependent upon the availability of pottery containers. These early ceramic containers, however, established themselves alongside flourishing pre-existing container traditions, with vessels made in a wide range of materials including clay, bitumen, basketry, leather, wood, and stone. How did prehistoric people respond to the emergence of containers as a key factor in their lives? Building on Olivier Nieuwenhuyse's rich scholarly legacy, this volume brings together 18 papers by leading scholars in the field of container technology, discussing cases from eastern Asia to Africa, but with a focus on prehistoric Western Asia. Looking not just at pottery but also explicitly beyond, the contributions consider and address the crossovers of different kinds of raw materials for containers and their crafting; the multiplicity of temporal scales in the production, use and discard of pottery; the social anchoring of vessels' use and deposition as evident in their specific contexts; and local as well as regional variations in early pottery. Black men and women were mobilized for service in the Spanish-Cuban-American War under the War Department's belief that southern blacks carried an immunity against tropical diseases. Later, in World Wars I and II, black troops were stigmatized as members of a contagious "venereal race" and were subjected to experimental medical treatments meant to curtail their sexual desires. By turns feared as contagious and at other times valued for their immunity, black men and women played an important part in the U.S. military's conscription of racial, gender, and sexual difference, even as they exercised their embattled agency at home and abroad. By following the scientific, medical, and cultural history of African American enlistment through the archive of American militarism, this book traces the black subjects and agents of empire as they came into contact with a world globalized by warfare. 20. Free Download Contact Front: Proven Leadership Lessons from the Iraq War's Deadliest Battle by Barry Shaw English | May 31, 2024 | ISBN: 8887638675 | 120 pages | EPUB | 1.72 Mb In the fall of 2004, an all-out siege was waged on a heavily fortified city, producing the most intense urban combat since the Battle of Hue City in Vietnam. The tempo and intensity of the fighting provided the ultimate proving ground for leadership theory and practical application. A lifetime of leadership lessons was learned and tested in the most demanding environment possible. Contact Front gives the reader an inside look at the harsh realities of sustained combat operations and teaches leadership concepts learned and relied upon during the Iraq War's deadliest battle, the Second Battle of Fallujah. The book is written from the perspective of a young marine sergeant thrust into an unexpected leadership role on the eve of Iraq's bloodiest battle because of a suicide car bomb attack. Each chapter is based on personal experiences in and around Fallujah in November 2004 and uses real-life combat experience to bring relevance and credibility to each highlighted leadership concept. Concepts were carefully chosen based on what worked, what continues to work, and what is necessary for developing effective leaders. The leadership concepts contained in the book are the result of years of reflection, evaluation, and professional development.
