  1. Rhizosphere Engineering and Stress Resilience in Plants: Concepts and Applications by Piyush Mathur, Soumya Mukherjee English | April 10, 2025 | ISBN: 1032406488 | 292 pages | EPUB | 17 Mb "In the hidden realm beneath our feet, a complex network of interactions unfolds between plant roots and the surrounding soil". The rhizosphere is a zone of intense biological and chemical activity, which plays a critical role in shaping plant growth, nutrient uptake, and ecosystem functioning. Recent advances in our understanding of root signaling and rhizosphere engineering have revealed the vast potential for manipulating these interactions to enhance crop productivity, improve soil health, and mitigate environmental stresses. It is worthwhile to decipher the molecular signals and nutrient exchanges between plants and microbes, which can in turn facilitate to design an innovative strategy to optimize rhizosphere functioning. It is imperative to bring about the development of more climate-resilient crops, improve soil carbon sequestration, and reduce the need for synthetic fertilizers. This field also offers opportunities for novel biotechnological applications, including the development of microbe-based biofertilizers and biopesticides. As we continue to face the challenges of a growing global population and environmental degradation, rhizosphere engineering offers a cutting-edge solution to crop productivity. It enables harnessing the power of plant-microbe interactions, unlocking new avenues for sustainable agriculture, and ecosystem restoration. This preface sets the stage for exploring the latest advances and future directions in rhizosphere engineering, highlighting its potential to revolutionize our understanding of soil ecosystems and promote a more sustainable future. This book explores the cutting-edge science and applications of rhizosphere engineering and root signaling, bringing together insights from plant biology, soil science, microbiology, and ecology. Unraveling the intricate communication networks between roots and soil can unveil new strategies for sustainable agriculture, ecosystem restoration, and environmental resilience. 3. Emily Cock, "Rhinoplasty and the nose in early modern British medicine and culture" English | 2022 | ISBN: 1526160749 | EPUB | pages: 328 | 1.1 mb Challenging histories of plastic surgery that posit a complete disappearance of Gaspare Tagliacozzi's rhinoplasty operation after his death in 1599, Rhinoplasty and the nose in early modern British medicine and culture traces knowledge of the procedure within the early modern British medical community, through to its impact on the nineteenth-century revival of skin-flap facial surgeries. The book explores why such a procedure was controversial, and the cultural importance of the nose, offering critical readings of literary noses from Shakespeare to Laurence Sterne. Medical knowledge of the graft operation was accompanied by a spurious story that the nose would be constructed from flesh purchased from a social inferior, and would drop off when that person died. The volume therefore explores this narrative in detail for its role in the procedure's stigmatisation, its engagement with the doctrine of medical sympathy, and its unique attempt to commoditise living human flesh. 5. Sophia Papaioannou, "Rhetoric and Religion in Ancient Greece and Rome " English | ISBN: 3110699168 | 2021 | 313 pages | EPUB | 2 MB It is perhaps a truism to note that ancient religion and rhetoric were closely intertwined in Greek and Roman antiquity. Religion is embedded in socio-political, legal and cultural institutions and structures, while also being influenced, or even determined, by them. Rhetoric is used to address the divine, to invoke the gods, to talk about the sacred, to express piety and to articulate, refer to, recite or explain the meaning of hymns, oaths, prayers, oracles and other religious matters and processes. The 13 contributions to this volume explore themes and topics that most succinctly describe the firm interrelation between religion and rhetoric mostly in, but not exclusively focused on, Greek and Roman antiquity, offering new, interdisciplinary insights into a great variety of aspects, from identity construction and performance to legal/political practices and a broad analytical approach to transcultural ritualistic customs. The volume also offers perceptive insights into oriental (i.e. Egyptian magic) texts and Christian literature. 7. Henry Morse Stephens, "Revolutionary Europe 1789-1815" English | 2020 | ASIN: B08KTTV7Q7 | EPUB | pages: 426 | 0.5 mb The Period from 1789 to 1815 an Era of Transition-The Principles propounded during the period which have modified the political conceptions of the Eighteenth Century: i. The Principle of the Sovereignty of the People; ii. The Principle of Nationality; iii. The Principle of Personal Liberty-The Eighteenth Century, the Era of the Benevolent Despots-The condition of the Labouring Classes in the Eighteenth Century: Serfdom-The Middle Classes-The Upper Classes-Why France led the way to modern ideas in the French Revolution-The influence of the thinkers and writers of the Eighteenth Century in bringing about the change-Contrast between the French and German thinkers-The low state of morality and general indifference to religion-Conclusion. The period from 1789 to 1815-that is, the era of the French Revolution and of the domination of Napoleon-marks one of the most important transitions in the history of Europe. Great as is the difference between the material condition of the Europe of the nineteenth century, with its railways and its electric telegraphs, and the Europe of the eighteenth century, with its bad roads and uncertain posts, it is not greater than the contrast between the political, social, and economical ideas which prevailed then and which prevail now. Modern principles, that mark a new departure in human progress and in its evidence, Civilisation, took their rise during this epoch of transition, and their development underlies the history of the period, and gives the key to its meaning. The conception that government exists for the promotion of the security and prosperity of the governed was fully grasped in the eighteenth century. But it was held alike by philosophers and rulers, alike in civilised England and in Russia emerging from barbarism that, whilst government existed for the good of the people, it must not be administered by the people. This fundamental principle is in the nineteenth century entirely denied. It is now believed that the government should be directed by the people through their representatives, and that it is better for a nation to make mistakes in the course of its self-government than to be ruled, be it ever so wisely, by an irresponsible monarch. This notion of the sovereignty of the people was energetically propounded during the great Revolution in France. It is not yet universally accepted in all the states of modern Europe. But it has profoundly affected the political development of the nineteenth century. It lies at the base of one group of modern political ideas; and, though in 1815 it seemed to have been propounded only to be condemned, one of the most striking features of the modern history of Europe since the Congress of Vienna, has been its gradual acceptance and steady growth in civilised countries. 8. Jeffrey Bortz, "Revolution within the Revolution: Cotton Textile Workers and the Mexican Labor Regime, 1910-1923" English | 2008 | ISBN: 0804758069 | EPUB | pages: 264 | 1.4 mb Mexico's revolution of 1910 ushered in a revolutionary era: during the twentieth century, Mexican, Russian, Chinese, Cuban, Nicaraguan, and Iranian revolutions shaped local, regional, and world history. Because Mexico was at the time a rural and agrarian country, it is not surprising that historians have concentrated on the revolution in the countryside where the rural underclass fought for land. This book uncovers a previously unknown workers' revolution within the broader revolution. Working in Mexico's largest factory industry, cotton textile operatives fought their own fight, one that challenged and overthrew the old labor regime and changed the social relations of work. Their struggle created the most progressive labor regime in Latin America, including but not limited to the famous Article 123 of the 1917 Constitution. Revolution within the Revolution analyzes the rules of labor and explains how they became a pillar of the country's political system. Through the rest of the twentieth century, Mexico's land reform and revolutionary labor regime allowed it to avoid the revolution and repression experienced elsewhere in Latin America. 9. K'tut Tantri, "Revolt In Paradise" English | 2016 | ISBN: 0343300788 | EPUB | pages: 306 | 2.7 mb The true-life adventure of a Western woman who found happiness in Bali, then stayed on in Indonesia to help in the struggle for freedom. The great-granddaughter of a witch from the Isle of Man, the adopted daughter of a Balinese rajah, hostess of one of the most glamorous hotels in the Far East, a prisoner of the Japanese for two horror-packed years and, as Surabaya Sue, an ardent supporter of the Indonesian revolution, K'tut Tantri is well acquainted with the unexpected. Adventure and courage run strong in her blood. It was in a Hollywood movie theater that she first discovered Bali and knew it for the place where she belonged. She had hoped to live and paint there quietly among the island's simple people, but destiny, in the form of a stalled car and a delightful young prince, took a hand and revised her plans. She was formally adopted by the prince's father, and...though she came to know the peasants of the Balinese kampongs, she knew also, and intimately, the life of a Balinese palace with all its ritual and tradition. This world lasted for only a few years. With war come the Japanese, presumably as deliverers overthrowing Dutch rule but in reality as tyrants. K'tut Tantri stayed on to join the underground movement agitating for Indonesian independence, and was eventually captured, imprisoned, tortured. Then with the end of hostilities she chose once again to ally herself with the Indonesians-this time in their resistance against the British and the returning Dutch. A friend of the leaders around Sukarno, she was instrumental in getting the Indonesian story to the outside world, and on several occasions she lent herself to enterprises requiring the combined talents of Mata Hari and T E. Lawrence. K'tut Tantri has an observant eye, an understanding knowledge, and she writes with spirit. Her story is a deeply moving personal drama and a vivid commentary on a period of crucial change in an ancient, romantic country. 10. Joseph A. Scotchie, "Revolt from the Heartland: The Struggle for an Authentic Conservatism" English | 2002 | ISBN: 0765801280, 0765805847 | EPUB | pages: 144 | 0.4 mb The dominant forces of American conservatism remain wedded, at all costs, to the Republican Party, but another movement, one with its roots in the pre-World War II era, has stepped forth to fill an intellectual vacuum on the right. This Old Right first rose in opposition to the New Deal, fighting both statism at home and the emergence of an American empire abroad. More recently this movement, sometimes called paleoconservatism, has provided the ideological backbone of modern populism and the opposition to globalization, with decisive effects on presidential politics. In Revolt from the Heartland, Joseph Scotchie provides an intellectual history of the Old Right, treating its main figures and defining its conflict with the traditional left-right political mainstream. As Scotchie's account makes clear, the Old Right and its descendents have articulated an arresting and powerful worldview. They include an array of learned and provocative writers, including M.E. Bradford, Russell Kirk, Richard Weaver, and Murray Rothbard, and more recently, Clyde Wilson, Thomas Fleming, Samuel Francis, and Chilton Williamson, Jr. Beginning with the movement's anti-Federalist forerunners, Scotchie traces its developments over two centuries of American history. In the realm of politics and economics, he examines the anti-imperialist stance against the Spanish-American War and the League of Nations, the split among conservatives on Cold War foreign policy, and the hostility to the socialist orientation of the New Deal. Identifying a number of social and cultural attitudes that define the Old Right, Scotchie finds the most important to be the importance of the classics, a recognition of regional cultures, the primacy of family over state, the moral case against immigration. In general, too, a Tenth Amendment approach to such recurring issues as education, abortion, and school prayer characterizes the group. As Scotchie makes clear, the Old Right and its grass-roots supporters have, and continue to be, a powerful force in modern American politics in spite of a lack of institutional support and media recognition. Revolt from the Heartland is an important study of a persisting current in American political life. 11. Randy P. Schiff, "Revivalist Fantasy: Alliterative Verse and Nationalist Literary History " English | ISBN: 0814211526 | 2011 | 304 pages | PDF | 2 MB In the book's opening, Schiff argues that the concept of an Alliterative Revival-the allegedly unified fourteenth-century resuscitation of Anglo-Saxon prosodic practices countering a Francophile South- is a nationalist formulation that reduces criticism's ability to engage with the variety of social and political contexts for late-medieval alliterative verse. Schiff explores the ways in which the nationalist assumptions of a critical Revivalism obscure late-medieval poetic meditations on class consolidation, gendered regional economics, imperial politics, and unstable textual cultures. Schiff analyzes transnational translation politics in 'William of Palerne' and its Old French source, 'Guillaume de Palerne,' and undermines the notion that alliterative verse was stubbornly Anglocentric. While examining anti-imperialist energies in the Northwest Midlands of 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,' Schiff illuminates the powerful role of women in a dynamic military zone. In a chapter focused on Arthurian texts of the unstable Anglo-Scottish marches, Schiff asserts that nationalist assumptions about alliterative verse disallow us to see practices such as military side-switching and trans-regional poetics. Turning to the socio-material background for the 'Piers Plowman Tradition', Schiff explores cutting-edge writing technologies that played a pivotal role in politicized poetry. Schiff concludes that, besides wrongly projecting national identity into the late-medieval period, Alliterative Revivalism precludes us from appreciating crucial continuities between late-medieval and post-national epochs that share fluid notions of territorial space and political identity. 16. Rhys Davids Caroline, "Revival: Sakya or Buddhist Origins: Or Buddhist Origins" English | 2019 | ISBN: 1138565520 | EPUB | pages: 456 | 1.0 mb Sakya or Buddhist Origins by Mrs. Rhys Davids is as relevant today as it was in 1928, the year of its first publication. Time has added to its value. The remarkable progress in the realm of Science has not abated man's yearning for the call of the quest. As the title implies, its aim is to unravel the genuine message of Gotama, the Buddha, from the accretions in the Pali scriptures, by adopting the techniques of archaeologist. It is divided into two parts. Part one treats of the discovery , the reconstruction, the rehabilitation of that which, at its birth, was a new and true word from very man to very man, true always and everywhere. Part two tells how this gospel came to be dressed to suit a monastic set of ideals. An appendix dealing with Pali Pitakas is added. Over the years, in spite of a large number of books, the horizons of knowledge about Buddhism have remained stationary. This book takes a further step in widening that knowledge and thus provides an impetus for further research. 18. Ludwig Henrich Friedlaender, "Revival: Roman Life and Manners Under the Early Empire" English | 2018 | ISBN: 1138557579 | EPUB | pages: 726 | 1.3 mb Every attempted delineation of the manners and customs of Imperial Rome must necessarily include a survey, as exhaustive as may be, of the spectacles, as the best measure of her grandeur, and as indicative in many ways of her moral and intellectual condition. Originally, for the most part, religious celebrations, they became, even in the later Republic, the best means of purchasing popular favour, and, under the Empire, of keeping the populace contented. Augustus, the tale runs, once reproached Pylades the Pantomime for his jealousy of a rival, and Pylades replied: 'It is to your advantage, Caesar, that the people concerns itself about us'. But these spectacles effected more even than the diversion of popular interest; their magnificence was a gauge of the popularity of the sovereign. The emperors, like Louis XIV, knew how admiration aids absolute autocracy; like Napoleon, that the imagination of the people must be excited: splendid festivals were one of their most indispensable and most constant devices. Even Caligula, according to Josephus, was honoured and beloved by the folly of the populace; the women and the youth did not desire his death; distributions of meat, the games and the gladiatorial combats had won their hearts, for such were the delights of the mob: the lavishing of these gifts was nominally due to consideration for the populace, though the gladiatorial combats were only intended to sate the monarch's lust of blood. Ford Madox Ford, "Revival: Provence from Minstrels to the Machine: From Minstrels to the Machine" English | 2018 | ISBN: 1138554073 | EPUB | pages: 370 | 2.6 mb "Provence" may perhaps be described as the crystallisation of the main idea running through the Great Trade Route, which we published a year ago. Of that book Mr A.G. McDonnell wrote in the Observer: "It is an Indictment, a Philipic....I know of no books to compare with this since Winwood Reade's Martyrdom of Man" But if "The Great Trade Route" was the destructive onslaught on dubious aspects of contemporary civilisation, "Provence" is the celebration of what might have been and what, according to Mr. Ford, may still yet be - contrasted with what is. For in that triangle of sun-baked , wind-swept, austere yet generous land, bounded as to its base by the Mediterranean and as to its sides, by the Rhone and the Alps, Mr Ford sees all the pride of past European splendour, the small healthy core of Europe's ailing present, the only promise for her future. How and why he sees all this his book alone can reveal, with its history, its moralisings, its descriptions vitalised and clarified by art. 22. S. Radhakrishnan, J. H. Muirhead, "Revival: Contemporary Indian Philosophy" English | 2019 | ISBN: 1138565296, 1138553034 | EPUB | pages: 384 | 0.5 mb The book includes essay which are all written by philosophers of or about forty -five years of age. They fall into two main groups: those in which the writer devotes himself chiefly to the exposition of the great Vedic tradition as he has apprehended it and made it the basis of his own life's work; and those in which the writer, while on the whole remining true to the spirit of that tradition, has sought to give new interpretations of it, either by instituting comparisons of it with the Western doctrines most closely allied to it or by treating of modern problems in a way which, though suggested by what he has learned from the West, is yet stamped with the mark of his own racial sympathy. Western readers will naturally find the latter group more attractive; but this volume will have failed of its purpose if it does not give them some sense of the truth that underlies even the essays with which, owing to the presuppositions ion which these are founded, they find themselves least in sympathy. Virginia De Castro E Almeida, Bernard Miall, "Revival: Conquests and Discoveries of Henry the Navigator: Being the Chronicles of Azurara" English | 2019 | ISBN: 1138565253, 1138551260 | EPUB | pages: 266 | 1.9 mb A preface from the pen of the late Marshal Lyautey introduces this book, which is an abridged translation of the Chronicales of Gomes Eannes de Azura, recording the siege and capture of Ceuta by the Portuguese, and the discovery of Guinea. Ceuta was captured because of the sons of John I-who had married the daughter of John of Gaunt-were ripe for knighthood , and rebelled against the bourgeois notion of receiving the acolade during a series of State banquets. Nothing less than the taking of a city from the Infidels would serve their turn; their knighthood must be truly earned and so Portugal became posessed of Ceuta. The second part of the book deals with the discovery of Guinea, Senegal, and Sierra Leone by Lancarote and others. The Chronicles, which made most excellent reading, have been edited by Senhora Virgina de Castro e Almeida, who is compiling an anthology of contemporary accounts of the great Portuguese navigators and colonists of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. 24. David Churchill Somervell, B. Ifor Evans, "Revival: Between the Wars" English | 2018 | ISBN: 1138555657 | EPUB | pages: 226 | 0.2 mb In Between The Wars Mr Somervell examines those twenty-one years of uneasy peace which elapsed between the First and Second World Wars, and analyses the gradual deterioration in international relations which marked the period. The victorious, all-powerful Allies of 1919, by founding the League of Nations with its prospects of open diplomacy and its machinery for negotiation, hoped to set up new standards of behaviour between sovereign states and eliminated war as a method of settling disputes. How were these good intentions thwarted? Why did a second catastrophe engulf Europe in 1939? Mr Somervell ranges widely over world events of the inter-war years in his search for answers to these questions. He shows how in most countries democracy, that form of Government which the creators of the Versailles Treaty fervently hoped to secure in the world, seldom imposed a rational will on its statesmen; on the contrary, public opinion inclined to the extremes of apathy and hysteria. He also demonstrates how the discoverers of misapplied science offered tempting new weapons to fanatical dictators avid for world power. We have just lived through the war that resulted from that epoch of muddle and drift; now is the moment for us to examine it critically as a chapter of history. Mr Somervill offers us valuable help in his detached and lucid survey.
