  2. Katherine Carté Engel, "Religion and Profit: Moravians in Early America" English | 2011 | ISBN: 0812221850 | EPUB | pages: 328 | 1.3 mb Winner of the 2010 Dale W. Brown Book Award for Outstanding Scholarship in Anabaptist and Pietist Studies The Moravians, a Protestant sect founded in 1727 by Count Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf and based in Germany, were key players in the rise of international evangelicalism. In 1741, after planting communities on the frontiers of empires throughout the Atlantic world, they settled the communitarian enclave of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in order to spread the Gospel to thousands of nearby colonists and Native Americans. In time, the Moravians became some of early America's most successful missionaries. Such vast projects demanded vast sums. Bethlehem's Moravians supported their work through financial savvy and an efficient brand of communalism. Moravian commercial networks, stretching from the Pennsylvania backcountry to Europe's financial capitals, also facilitated their efforts. Missionary outreach and commerce went hand in hand for this group, making it impossible to understand the Moravians' religious work without appreciating their sophisticated economic practices as well. Of course, making money in a manner that be fitted a Christian organization required considerable effort, but it was a balancing act that Moravian leaders embraced with vigor. Religion and Profit traces the Moravians' evolving mission projects, their strategies for supporting those missions, and their gradual integration into the society of eighteenth-century North America. Katherine Carté Engel demonstrates the complex influence Moravian religious life had on the group's economic practices, and argues that the imperial conflict between Euro-Americans and Native Americans, and not the growth of capitalism or a process of secularization, ultimately reconfigured the circumstances of missionary work for the Moravians, altering their religious lives and economic practices. The author shows how Lamormaini planned for the restoration of Catholicism in Germany and documents in detail his influence on Ferdinand, his conflict with Ferdinand's first minister, and his relationships with other important figures in Vienna and Rome. 4. Wilhelm Gräb, "Religion and Human Rights: Global Challenges from Intercultural Perspectives" English | ISBN: 311034811X | 2015 | 228 pages | EPUB, PDF | 413 KB + 1269 KB Current processes of globalization are challenging Human Rights and the attempts to institutionalize them in many ways. The question of the connection between religion and human rights is a crucial point here. The genealogy of the Human Rights is still a point of controversies in the academic discussion. Nevertheless, there is consensus that the Christian tradition - especially the doctrine that each human being is an image of God - played an important role within the emergence of the codification of the Human Rights in the period of enlightenment. It is also obvious that the struggle against the politics of apartheid in South Africa was strongly supported by initiatives of churchy and other religious groups referring to the Human Rights. Christian churches and other religious groups do still play an important role in the post-apartheid South Africa. They have a public voice concerning all the challenges with which the multiethnic and economically still deeply divided South African society is faced with. The reflections on these questions in the collected lectures and essays of this volume derive from an academic discourse between German and South African scholars that took place within the German-South African Year of Science 2012/13. 7. Gunter Bischof, "Relationships/Beziehungsgeschichten: Austria and the United States in the Twentieth Century" English | 2015 | ISBN: 3706542145 | EPUB | pages: 250 | 1.2 mb After the breakup of the Habsburg Monarchy, the Austrian-American relationship was one of a dwarf confronting a giant. America continued to offer a better life for many Austrian emigrants, while for America the small Austrian Republic was insignificant. However, there were times when Austria mattered geopolitically. During the post - World War II occupation of Austria, the US helped reconstruct Austria economically and was the biggest champion of its independence. During the Cold War, the US frequently used Austria as a mediator site for summit meetings. Austria adopted American mass-production models and consumerism, while its youth adopted American popular culture. Americanization and American preponderance also produced anti-American feelings. With Austria's accession to the European Union at the end of the Cold War, it once again lost significance within Washington's geopolitics. 10. John Bush Jones, "Reinventing Dixie: Tin Pan Alley's Songs and the Creation of the Mythic South" English | 2022 | ISBN: 0807177350 | EPUB | pages: 294 | 1.0 mb Tin Pan Alley, once New York City's songwriting and recording mecca, issued more than a thousand songs about the American South in the first half of the twentieth century. In Reinventing Dixie, John Bush Jones explores the broad impact of these songs in creating and disseminating the imaginary view of the South as a land of southern belles, gallant gentlemen, and racial harmony. In profiles of Tin Pan Alley's lyricists and composers, Jones explains how a group of undereducated and untraveled writers―the vast majority of whom were urban northerners or European immigrants― constructed the specific and detailed images of the South used in their song lyrics. In the process of evaluating the origins of Tin Pan Alley's songbook, Jones analyzes these songwriters' attitudes about North-South reconciliation, ideals of honor and hospitality, and the recurring theme of the yearning for home. Though a few of the songs employed parody or satire to undercut the vision of a peaceful, romantic South, the majority ignored the realities of racism and poverty in the region. By the end of Tin Pan Alley's era of cultural prominence in the mid-twentieth century, Jones contends that the work of its writers had cemented the "moonlight and magnolias" myth in the minds of millions of Americans. Reinventing Dixie sheds light on the role of songwriters in forming an idyllic vision of the South that continues to influence the American imagination. 14. Leanne McCormick, "Regulating sexuality: Women in twentieth-century Northern Ireland" English | 2011 | ISBN: 0719085101, 0719076641 | EPUB | pages: 264 | 0.5 mb This is a groundbreaking examination of the attempts to regulate female sexuality in twentieth-century Northern Ireland, which opens up new and exciting areas of a previously neglected history. A wide-ranging study, it explores the sexual experiences of women in the context of the distinctive religious, political and social circumstances of Northern Ireland during the twentieth century. The commonality of attitudes of the Catholic Churches toward the control of female sexuality is revealed, along with the similarity of views concerning female behaviour. While the ways in which various authorities tried to control female behaviour are explored, it is also argued that women were not simply victims, but employed a variety of survival strategies and active agency, no matter how difficult their circumstances were. This work will appeal not only to an academic audience but also to non-academic readers interested in a new and exciting view of Northern Ireland's past. Richard D Elmers, "Regular Army Corporal: Growing up in the Depression, World War II, and the Korean and Cold Wars" English | 2010 | ISBN: 1594331588 | EPUB | pages: 304 | 1.0 mb Regular Army Corporal is a story of an American family and of a childhood and adolescence in the troubled and now forgotten eras of the Great Depression and World War II, and of a young man's struggle for maturity and fulfillment in his relationship with Jesus Christ in the midst of war. In it the author addresses troublesome issues of morality, sexuality, ethics, alcoholism, and military discipline and leadership that are every bit as urgent and compelling today as in the wars of the past century and throughout our history. 17. Ashok Kapor, "Regional Security Structures in Asia" English | 2002 | ISBN: 0700716165 | EPUB | pages: 208 | 2.3 mb Kapor argues that explanations of international relations in Asia in the post-Second World War period have relied too much on the Cold War as a key explanatory factor, and have not given enough emphasis to the useful concepts of 'regional power formation', 'conflict formation' and 'conflict resolution'. The author outlines these concepts and goes on to elaborate on them, and to apply them to three key Asian regions - northeast, southeast, and south Asia - discussing practical strategic issues in an historical perspective and arguing that these concepts, and other concepts which he discusses, are extremely helpful in making sense of the complex pattern of international relations in Asia. 18. Fredrik Soderbaum, "Regional Organizations in African Security" English | 2010 | ISBN: 0415597870 | EPUB | pages: 160 | 0.2 mb The African continent is plagued by some of the most brutal and violent conflicts in the world. At the same time that warfare is changing, so has the state's capacity to provide security and political stability to its citizens. This book deals with the role of regional organizations in Africa's security. It focuses on three basic―yet often overlooked―questions: (1) the advantages and disadvantages of African regional and sub-regional organizations vis-à-vis other security mechanisms, (2) the official and unofficial reasons to intervene, and (3) whether security is actually protected by the peace activities carried out by the regional organizations. The contributors to the book―all leading researchers in the field―systematically assess and compare the role of the African Union (AU), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). This book was based on a special issue of African Security. 19. Regina: The Queens Who Could Have Been by Emily Murdoch Perkins English | June 3, 2025 | ISBN: 1803995602 | 256 pages | PDF | 7.56 Mb What queens would England have had if firstborn daughters, not firstborn sons, had inherited the throne? We may think of princesses as dutiful, marital conveniences to build alliances, wearing long flowing dresses, but the eldest daughters of our kings have been very different. Political intriguers. Abducted nuns who demanded divorces. Murderers. Our princesses have been mothers willing to risk anything for their children, wives who followed their husbands to the very ends of earth, and spinsters who demanded their intellectual and societal freedom. This book explores what it meant to be royal, how sons came to be valued higher than daughters, and just how England might have looked under a royal matriarchy. The politicians we lost, the masterminds we see negotiating nunneries not armies, the personalities shining brilliantly even hundreds of years later: the Queens who should have been. Let's meet them. 20. Frank Caestecker, Bob Moore, "Refugees From Nazi Germany and the Liberal European States" English | 2010 | ISBN: 1845455878 | EPUB | pages: 358 | 1.2 mb The exodus of refugees from Nazi Germany in the 1930s has received far more attention from historians, social scientists, and demographers than many other migrations and persecutions in Europe. However, as a result of the overwhelming attention that has been given to the Holocaust within the historiography of Europe and the Second World War, the issues surrounding the flight of people from Nazi Germany prior to 1939 have been seen as Vorgeschichte (pre-history), implicating the Western European democracies and the United States as bystanders only in the impending tragedy. Based on a comparative analysis of national case studies, this volume deals with the challenges that the pre-1939 movement of refugees from Germany and Austria posed to the immigration controls in the countries of interwar Europe. Although Europe takes center-stage, this volume also looks beyond, to the Middle East, Asia and America. This global perspective outlines the constraints under which European policy makers (and the refugees) had to make decisions. By also considering the social implications of policies that became increasingly protectionist and nationalistic, and bringing into focus the similarities and differences between European liberal states in admitting the refugees, it offers an important contribution to the wider field of research on political and administrative practices. 22. Thomas M. Izbicki, "Reform, Ecclesiology, and the Christian Life in the Late Middle Ages " English | ISBN: 1138382396 | 2019 | 286 pages | EPUB | 2 MB Philosophy was not an idle venture in the Renaissance. There were no clear-cut boundaries between theory and the practice. Theologians, jurists and humanists gave opinions on practical matters from within some larger intellectual context, and many held high office. Among the writers represented here are Pope Pius II (1458-1464), Nicholas of Cusa (d. 1464) and Juan de Torquemada OP (d. 1468). All of them, and the other writers dealt with, addressed the issues of their day creatively but from within different traditions, scholastic or humanistic. The present studies deal with issues of Reform, Ecclesiology [theories about the church and its mission] and the living of the Christian life. Among the specific issues covered are the canonization of Birgitta of Sweden, the status of converts from Judaism in Spain, acceptable forms of dress for clergy and laity, and the obedience due the pope. Also studied in this collection are the writings of Spanish theologians about the indigenous populations of the New World and the use of the name of Nicholas of Cusa by Elizabethan and Jacobean writers, both Catholic and Protestant, in polemics concerning right religious teaching and submission to the English crown, a paper hitherto unpublished. Reflection Asymmetry in Atomic Nuclei English | 2025 | ISBN: 9819805953 | 335 Pages | PDF (True) | 39 MB As a complex self-bound quantum many-body system, atomic nuclei exhibit various shapes due to significant long-range multipole-multipole interactions among nucleons. Studies of these shapes and the associated nuclear moments have deepened our understanding of simple patterns in complex nuclear systems and are connected to fundamental questions in particle physics, astrophysics, and beyond. In recent decades, advancements in global facilities and detectors have led to increased attention on the study of reflection asymmetry in atomic nuclei, both experimentally and theoretically. The collection of research and review articles presented in this book offers a detailed account of various sub-topics, including reflection asymmetric shapes, nuclear shape phase transitions, nuclear masses, nuclear fission, clustering structures, high-spin states, octupole collective motions, electric dipole moments, and CP violation. These contributions not only highlight the progress made thus far but also pave the way for future investigations. The book will be particularly useful for researchers in nuclear physics.
