Full House (Montgomery) - 5:21 Eric Alexander - tenor saxophone Harold Mabern - piano, Fender Rhodes (#4,5,9) Bob Cranshaw - bass Joe Farnsworth - drums Not only has tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander recorded more than thirty-five albums as a leader since arriving in New York City some twenty years ago, he has appeared on almost as many others as a sideman. He's such an earnest blue-collar worker that one almost expects him to carry his saxophone in a lunch pail instead of the standard instrument case. Any Second Impression would mirror the first: Alexander is a tireless craftsman who loves to play and, more to the point, always shows up ready to play. Nothing seems to impede him, even the severe back pain he was suffering as this latest recording was being made. As the premise behind Second Impression was bold spontaneity, Alexander gathered around him a trio of longtime friends and colleagues whose musical antennae reside on the same wavelength, thus assuring that whatever path he might choose would be firm and secure. Pianist Harold Mabern and drummer Joe Farnsworth have been mainstays on a number of Alexander's previous albums, while bassist Bob Cranshaw, the rhythm section's relative "newcomer" at age eighty-three, had worked alongside Mabern since their days in Chicago in the '50s and brought a wealth of experience to the task at hand. Needless to say, Alexander had no second thoughts about Cranshaw's inclusion on the team. Once the group was intact and ready, tunes were chosen and arrangements worked out in the studio. Mabern suggested Jimmy Smith's juicy "T-Bone Steak" and Wes Montgomery's boppish "Full House" to complement three originals by Alexander, Sergio Mendez' seductive "So Many Stars" and the standards "Secret Love" and Matt Dennis / Tom Adair's ode to despair, "Everything Happens to Me" (to these ears, the session's apex). Farnsworth contributed the funky "Jennie's Dance," on which Mabern plays Fender Rhodes and Cranshaw electric bass, as they do on "Secret Love" and "Full House." Alexander wrote the title song, which raises the album's curtain, as well as the upbeat "Blues for Mo" and even snappier "Frenzy." While Mabern, Cranshaw and Farnsworth play their roles with enthusiasm and assurance, and Mabern is an especially engaging and perceptive soloist, it's clear that they are essentially along for the ride, lending Alexander a broad canvas on which to paint his sharp and radiant sound-portraits. Alexander, for his part, is invariably eloquent and persuasive, reinforcing his stature as one of the jazz world's most astute and accomplished tenor saxophonists. They operated Lofish Recording Studios until 2015, when gentrification forced them to close door. The pair have been prolific with recordings, including: Beneath the Surface (Lofish, 2004); The Only Way Out is Up (Lofish, 2007); Songs of Love and Destruction (Lofish, 2010); Christmas in July (Lofish, 2011), Elisabeth Lohninger Quartet: Live (Lofish, 2012), and the most recent and intimate Elisabeth Lohninger & Walter Fischbacher: Ballads in Blue (Jazz Sick Records, 2015). What is evident from this decade of releases is that the Lohninger/Fischbacher jazz diptych has impressive depth and breadth. The two push their boundaries further with the airy and ethereal Eleven Promises where Lohninger's solidly established alto is allow free reign in an adult contemporary vocals environment. Lushly orchestrated with strings scored by Fischbacher, Eleven Promises approaches a post-modern ideal that had its genesis in the performance style of Sade Adu and Anita Baker. Lohninger enhances this vocals vector with a creatively dense overlay of her and Fischbacher's informed compositional skills. Smart and engaging, the 11 original compositions, lay out a comprehensive vision of singing that goes well beyond simple genre definitions and expectations. This single standard, frightfully enough is well-trodden "The Girl from Ipanema." Like "My Funny Valentine," "The Girl from Ipanema" and other songs like them, experience a certain interpretive tachyphylaxis that manifests as a resistance to renewal and revelation, even in the hands of exceptional artists. In short, when one chooses to interpret a war-torn standard today, he or she should "go big, or go home." Thankfully, Lohninger is up to the challenge, creating a "Girl from Ipanema" as starkly angular and challenging as Laurie Antonioli's "My Funny Valentine" from her darkly beautiful recording Varuna (Origin Records, 2015). Lohninger brings the post-modern spirit with which she caressed this chestnut to the remainder of the recording, joining synergistically with Fischbacher and his intelligently navigated transitions from acoustic ("Take My Picture While I'm Smiling") to electric piano ("Ipanema" and "Mellow Moon Moaning") and stylistically from All American ("Take My Picture") and humidly Latin ("Ya Mi Corazon"). You Are My Song Through steady work, Edgar Winter kept himself visible throughout the '90s, culminating with a pair of solid efforts for Intersound. Those appeared under the radar of popular consciousness, known only to hard rock and blues-rock fans. For the general public, Winter re-entered consciousness through a series of television commercials -- usually, they just featured his songs, but he was the star in a clever Miller campaign that suggested Winter and George Hamilton were twins -- along with a prominent song in the political satire Wag the Dog. All of this led to a contract with Pyramid Records and Winter Blues, his first large-scale, heavily promoted release in nearly 20 years. As is customary for any comeback release, Winter Blues is flush with cameos, but this time around, they make sense -- brother Johnny, Rick Derringer and Leon Russell have been long-time colleagues of Edgar, while Dr. John and (surprisingly) Eddie Money fit in quite nicely. Their presence is welcome, since Winter has never been the strongest of frontmen and they never take away from his guitar playing, which remains the best reason to hear Winter Blues. Anyone that paid attention to his Intersound releases would have realized that Winter has been cutting good, solid records in the '90s and this is no different, but anyone that hasn't followed him will be surprised how consistent this is.
