Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most (5:16) Dida Pelled: Plays And Sings While no "one size fits all" prescription exists for molding and educating unique artists, some schools seem to have an exceptional track record. A large segment of the who's who of jazz greats from Detroit went through Cass Technical High School and more than a few Texas jazz titans received their education at Booker T. Washington High School For The Performing And Visual Arts. Another, less likely source-The Thelma Yellin High School Of The Arts in Tel Aviv, Israel-wasn't really on anybody's radar twenty years ago, but has become the ultimate hotbed for Israeli jazz activity. Bassist Omer Avital, the Cohen siblings (Anat Cohen, Avishai Cohen - Trumpet and Yuval Cohen), and pianists Omer Klein and Shimrit Shoshan all blossomed in this artistic incubator. Now, guitarist/vocalist Dida Pelled deserves to be added to the list. Pelled has taken the prescribed course for Israeli jazz hopefuls, graduating from Thelma Yellin and honing her skills during her service in the Israeli Army, but she's no cookie-cutter performer. Pelled's warm voice possesses an emotive quality that's simultaneously soothing and intoxicating, and her guitar playing, which is built on her round sound, strong comping skills and soulful single note solo lines, places her in a category all her own. On Plays And Sings, the young guitarist proves to be an old soul, capable of crafting timeless, yet modern, interpretations of classic fare. While the core trio of Pelled, bassist Tal Ronen and drummer Gregory Hutchinson, are responsible for delivering these charming and swinging performances, a pair of guest trumpeters occasionally join in the music-making. Roy Hargrove provides little asides and some strong solo work on "Our Love Is Here To Stay," revels in the grooving atmosphere of Wes Montgomery's "Fried Pies," and follows the changes in mood on a Four Seasons favorite ("Can't Take My Eyes Off You"), while Fabio Morgera's pair of appearances feature his clean-toned trumpet work ("Three Coins In The Fountain") and muted obbligato ("More Than You Know"). While both men are welcome additions to the program, their appearances are a bonus, not a necessity. Pelled's guitar playing, which can be pleasantly dreamy ("More Than You Know"), quaint ("Stompin At The Savoy") and rhythmically engaging ("Fried Pies"), is of greater importance than any guest spots. When accompanying herself, she creates a mesh of warmth that perfectly matches her vocal style, but when she removes her voice from the equation, things can go in another direction. Her lines are often informed by a laid-back, Grant Green-influenced style of playing that touches on the blues in a soulful manner, but she also brings her background into play. Horace Silver's "Calcutta Cutie" might have originally contained allusions of India, but Pelled's angular lines and Ronen's exotic bass riff turn it into a musical caravan across the Negev desert. Plays And Sings doesn't present a singer that also plays a little guitar or a guitarist who occasionally picks up a microphone. Although Charlie Musselwhite ended up taking home the trophy, the honor served to put Mike on the national blues map, as have two terrific CDs on his own Jukehouse label. With Upset the Status Quo, his third solo disc, the Northern California blues wailer and his backing musicians -- made up of the cream of the area's blues session players, plus two visitors from Southern California: onetime Robert Cray keyboardist Jim Pugh and legendary bassist Jerry Jemmott, who was between gigs with Aretha Franklin -- take the blues in bold new directions while remaining steeped in tradition. The tunes - eight of the 11 from Mike's own pen - range from blues shuffles and ballads to funky soul grooves and a two-beat shout tempo straight out of church. Many of his lyrics cleverly address such contemporary concerns as social media, identity theft, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and restraining orders. "When you write songs about real life, people really connect to that," Mike says. "The first thing that's gonna catch 'em is the groove, and after that you tell a story and they'll get it. When the two are nailed together, you got something. You're touching the spirit then." "Everybody's talking about, 'Is the blues gonna survive?'" he adds. "The blues can't survive if everybody keeps doing the same old stuff that everybody else is doing." Sittin' Here Thinkin' Al Miller had been contributing to the Chicago blues scene for over 30 years when, in 1994, he finally recorded his first album as a leader, Wild Cards. The singer/guitarist/harpist was far from a huge name in the blues world, but then, a lack of commercial success wasn't something that discouraged Delmark founder Bob Koester; if Koester felt that a blues or jazz artist deserved to be documented, he would put out an album regardless of how obscure he/she was. For this enjoyable, if unremarkable, session, Delmark hired Dave Specter (an excellent guitarist who shouldn't be confused with software public relations man David Spector) to do the producing, and employed his guitar on eight of its 14 selections. The personnel varies from song to song, and the CD's vocals are handled not only by Miller, but also by Willie Kent, Tad Robinson (whose gruff style recalls Dave Prater of Sam & Dave) and Steve Freund. Miller, in fact, lays out on six tracks; in other words, he lays out on almost half of his own album. Electric Chicago blues is Wild Cards' primary focus, although the CD successfully detours into '60s-type soul on "Stuck in Chicago" and acknowledges jazz with a gutsy version of Gene Ammons' "Red Top." Specter isn't heard on the latter, which is surprising because the bluesman is heavily influenced by jazz and would have been perfect for the tune. This newest venture Three Miles From Avalon does not disappoint. Knowles co-produced and recorded this album in his base of operations Chicago with friend Anthony Gravino. My favorite track "Oxford MS", a story song of violence and torment pushes this album from amazing, to astronomically amazing. Meanwhile, "Never Gonna Be The Same" sounds like Knowles stretched the south side of Chicago all the way down to the bayou. It has a slick and humid sound that leaves you sweating for more. Moving right along we have the albums namesake, "Three Miles From Avalon," which creates a downbeat whirlpool that pulls you in and keeps you there. "What You're Made Of" on the other hand is like getting a chiropractic adjustment from a jackhammer, you know it's probably a bad idea, but it's impossible to resist once it's offered. I Knew She Was A Liar (But Would Never Call Her A Thief) (2:55) Davy Knowles, the name will ring bells yes this is the solo album of the precocious young guitarist from Isle Of Man who was formerly part of the blues-rock band Back Door Slam. Davy is now working as a solo artist and is based in U.S.A gaining a deserved reputation as Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam. Outsider is 14 tracks of a perfect blending of guitar and vocals as he delivers the self-penned numbers with vigour and passion. The words tell a story that are at times introspective, probably autobiographical but they resonate with the listener as they are about striving and life experiences and disappointment we can all relate to. The open track Ain't No Grave, has a haunting desolate intro delivered by resonator and Hammond and then you hear Davy's gravelly distinct voice for the first time, but this is no maudlin track as the beat picks up and a positive vibe takes over with a foot tapping drumming beat and some great lyrics. Work A Little Harder, perhaps will be many people's anthem for 2015 this track has a feel of a rock anthem you can imagine this delivered in an arena with the audience screaming back the chorus it has real energy. The tempo changes again with Island Bound, a solo style track vocals and guitar and a storyline that makes you want to sit back and listen. What Doesn't Kill You; has a different riff and feel and certainly could form part of a motivational track listing as he creates a vocal picture that certainly engages. The title track Outsider has some dirty guitar, melodic Hammond and his vocals have a different tone there is an urgency in this song and despair of being on the outside looking in whether that is physical or a mental state you find yourself in. His song/story skills are at the top of the game as he really captures that fear we all have when we feel outside how when we speak the words catch in our throats. The words fall away and then there is the reflective instrumental closing of the track that real works so well who needs words when you are on the outside. This is an album full of little gems, salient works, delightful riffs and licks and a group of musicians who just want to play and deliver quality music and this is an album like a box of chocolates full of little bits of musical temptation that you just want to listen to. The album is a showcase for the talent as a singer and song writer and blends his influences from Dire Straits to Woody Guthrie and Pastures Of Plenty is his tribute to the great man himself as a bonus track. This is an album that makes 2015 feel like a good place to be as it is full of luscious vibrant sound delivered by Davy and the array of talented musicians that he has gathered around him to create Outsider; this is an album that is right at home in anyone's collection.
