George was still riding his 1974 chart-topper "Rock Your Baby," while Gwen had scored a Top Ten hit of her own shortly afterward with "Rockin' Chair." Although they'd been pursuing solo careers, in fact they'd recorded as a duo in the early '70s, so Together was not so much a new pairing as a reunion, though ironically they'd separate romantically not long after it was done. "Rock Your Baby" in particular is regarded as a pivotal early disco record, but the Together album isn't a straight disco outing, though some disco's involved. Instead, it's a rather typical if high-class mid-'70s Miami soul album, disco rhythms informing some of the more uptempo tracks (especially "Let's Dance Dance Dance"), but others veering toward straighter romantic soul. None of the songs are particularly outstanding (and "I'll Do the Rockin'" seems like an obvious attempt to milk the "Rock Your Baby" formula), but it's pleasantly professional period soul-disco, the songs largely written by Clarence Reid. The 2009 CD reissue on Shout adds historical liner notes and a half-dozen George McCrae solo bonus tracks, the most interesting of which are three mid-'70s cuts (including the small hit "I Ain't Lyin'"); the others date from much later in his career. Bible 6:34 I found myself in a strange position last year, finding the almost universally praised Ghost album Meliora hit-or-miss. I'd much preferred their previous effort, Infestissumam, which was conversely met with lukewarm reviews by the public at large. I think I can split the difference on this new EP, Popestar. The five-track EP only features one new Ghost composition, "Square Hammer", but damn is it a corker. Those who still pine for the band to return to the relative heaviness of their first album, Opus Anonymous, still won't give a shit. It's got those same Blue Oyster Cult-meets-ABBA pop hooks that metal purists have been decrying since at least album #2. But for those of us on board with such possibilities, "Square Hammer" is one of the shining gems in the band's catalog. It's a relentless confection of earworm hooks, carnival organ and a harmony chorus that just won't quit. The other four tracks are covers in the vein of the band's 2013 EP If You Have Ghosts. The song selection is just that much more adventurous than on the previous extended play. First up is "Nocturnal Me", an old Echo & the Bunnymen cut from their classic Ocean Rain album. you know, the one with "The Killing Moon", although that was thankfully considered too obvious to cover here. The Ghost version adds a bit more beef to the original's post-punk guitar tone, registering somewhere between old Marilyn Manson and H.I.M., but better than that comparison might sound. "I Believe" shows that Ghost do indeed listen to music from this century, it having originated on Simian Mobile Disco's 2007 album, Attack Decay Sustain Release. This one is primarily a showcase for Papa Emeritus III's crooning, accompanied only by a light synth chorus and brushed drums. It's a decent rendition in its own right that seems more like an interlude tying the heavier songs together, sandwiched as it is in the middle of the sequencing. Next up is "Missionary Man", a huge hit for the Eurythmics back in 1986: one of their last really big ones, and one which gets almost zero nostalgia spins 30 years later. The heavy, bombastic guitars work really well on this one, although Emeritus' weirdly nasal intonation sounds uncomfortably like the sprechgesang of Fred Scheider of the B-52's. Still a decent stab at an unfairly overlooked 80's pop classic. Finally we have a song that nearly everyone hearing this, myself included, will have been heretofore unfamiliar with: "Bible" by Swedish band Imperiet. Also dating from 1986, this song features the gated drums, gospel chorus and ringing, atonal guitars that would be expected out of a song from the era (if Imperiet hadn't written this song, Mike & the Mechanics would have had to). "Bible" is one of the most epic and unapologetically grandiose pop statements Ghost have ever released, even if they didn't actually write it. He Needs Me Gloria Lynne recorded many albums for Everest in her early days, slipped away into obscurity, and then in the 1990s made a comeback. An excellent singer whose style falls between bop, 1950s middle-of-the-road pop, and early soul, Lynne was always capable of putting on a colorful show. Her mother was a gospel singer and Lynne started out singing in church. She had five years of concert training and in 1951 won the legendary amateur competition at the Apollo Theater. Lynne sang with some vocal groups, became a solo artist, and in 1958 was discovered by Raymond Scott, who at the time was a top A&R man at Everest. During her busy period with Everest (at least ten records were cut between 1958-1963), Lynne had hits in "I Wish You Love" (a song she virtually made a standard) and "I'm Glad There Is You." She recorded with both orchestras and jazz combos, becoming quite popular for a period. However, with the rise of rock and the change in the public's musical tastes, Lynne was forgotten for a time. Only a commercial record in 1975 for ABC broke the silence. But starting in the early '80s, Lynne started working regularly again, regained some of her earlier fame, and in the early '90s recorded a couple of CDs for Muse; her initial Everest date also reappeared as an Evidence CD. Born Richelle Renee Wright in Kansas City in 1970, she grew up in the small town of Wellsville, KS, and fell in love with country music before she'd even started school. She took piano lessons starting at age four and began singing in groups at 11, also playing trumpet in her school band. At 14 she started performing in local clubs with a backing band called County Line, which featured her father on bass. The summer after her junior year of high school she performed in the long-running Ozark Jubilee show, and as a senior she successfully auditioned for a job impersonating female country stars at Nashville's Opryland theme park. She moved there permanently in 1989 and spent the next three years working at Opryland and an assortment of day jobs. Eventually, she landed a publishing deal on the strength of her songwriting, and a record contract with Mercury/Polydor followed. Wright's debut album, Woman in the Moon, was released in 1994 and attracted positive notice from some critics and the country music community, earning her a Top New Female Vocalist award from the ACM. Unfortunately, neither it nor its follow-up, 1996's Right in the Middle of It, sold very well. Wright asked for her release from Polydor and moved over to MCA, where she had the opportunity to work with the commercially savvy producer Tony Brown. Though it wasn't a smash, Wright's 1997 label debut, Let Me In, did make the country Top 40 and gave the singer her first Top 20 hit in "Shut Up and Drive." Moreover, her constant touring was paying off in the form of a growing fan base, setting the stage for her breakthrough with 1999's Single White Female. The album's title track became Wright's first number one hit, and the following year she and Brad Paisley performed a duet on their co-composition "Hard to Be a Husband, Hard to Be a Wife." Her next album, Never Love You Enough, became her first to break the country Top Ten, and she reached the Top 30 with the title track and "Jezebel." In 2004, after leaving MCA, she released Everything, a collection of leftover session material not included on her previous releases, on her own Painted Red imprint. In 2005 Wright moved over to Dualtone for The Metropolitan Hotel. After a long tour, Wright took an extended break from recording, and finally re-emerged in 2010 with Lifted Off the Ground on Vanguard, as well as the written memoir Like Me: Confessions of a Heartland Country Singer from Random House. Both his debut, Payin' for My Sins, and 2 Days Short of a Week put Champion on the national touring blues map and helped launch his career beyond the boundaries of his native Jackson, Mississippi. Champion was the youngest of his father's 28 children, and he grew up in rural Canton, outside of Jackson. Raised on a farm, hard work became a way of life for him. Like so many other blues performers, he joined his church choir as an eight-year-old and began singing gospel. Then at 15, his mother moved the family to Miami, Florida, where he attended high school for a year before heading back home to Mississippi for his senior year. After he was graduated, he returned to Florida where he tried boxing, being a radio DJ, and several other occupations before he settled into his career as a performer. He recorded and released his own album, Goin' Back Home, in 1998 and began drawing ever-larger crowds to Florida blues clubs before catching the attention of Shanachie Records executives, who signed him. Champion has not been afraid to speak his mind on his two releases for Shanachie, and he writes from personal experience with social commentary songs like "Policeman Blues" (about racial profiling), and "Children of the Corn," a song about the rising tide of youth violence. From the inception of his career as a blues performer, Champion has sought to tackle new lyrical themes with his original compositions. As a triple-threat harmonica player, guitarist, and songwriter, he accomplishes that in grand style on both Payin' for My Sins and 2 Days Short of a Week. Champion, along with young innovators like Shemekia Copeland and Shawn Pittman, is one of the brighter beacons in the future of blues music.
