Cellar Door Though Holly Brook claims that her biggest influence is Joni Mitchell, to anyone listening to her debut album, Like Blood Like Honey, the clearest comparison is instead to fellow Mitchell devotee Sarah McLachlan. In fact, the record could practically read as a link between Surfacing and Afterglow. The opener, "Giving It Up for You" is reminiscent of "Fallen," "Curious" sounds like "Angel," and everything else seems to correspond somehow to one of McLachlan's sentimentally charged songs. But Brook is also a talented and affective songwriter in her own right, and so cuts like "Wanted," "Saturdays," and the aforementioned "Giving It Up for You" are able to convey true emotion over thoughtful melodies that, while they do follow basic adult radio rock rules, are still interesting and catchy. Unfortunately she, like McLachlan, falls into the trap of excessively dramatic lyrics that speak of heartache and self-discovery over heavy piano chords, variations of the same poignant plea again and again. Nothing on Like Blood Like Honey is bad; Brook has decent musical ideas to which she stays true and consistent throughout the album's entirety, but the repetition makes most of it pretty forgettable, each emotional song after emotional song blending into one sad piano ballad. It's almost as if Brook isn't quite sure enough of herself yet to delve outside of her comfortably overly sensitive state. She finds solace and strength in being depressed and honest ("What I wouldn't give just to get some rest/So I can remember how to live again," she mournfully admits in "What I Wouldn't Give"), but still, the security that she creates for herself can only exist based on other people's acknowledgement of it. "I will be wanted, I will not fall from grace" (a theme McLachlan touches upon often) Brook sings, but it's not so much of an affirmation as an assertion that her own feelings of worth are dependent upon other people's definition of who she is. Gillan's off-and-on relationship with the band has allowed him plenty of time to pursue solo work. The best of it is represented on Mercury High: The Story of Ian Gillan, featuring 30 solo tracks recorded between 1977 to 2001. You have to give Gillan credit for his eclectic choice of material. He could have easily relied on a ready-made audience wanting further Deep Purple retreads. Instead, Gillan's patented and piercing heavy metal screech is pretty much absent and replaced by a softer approach on tracks that incorporate polished soul-pop, mainstream arrangements. The closest Gillan gets to the Deep Purple sound are the songs from the 1991 Toolbox album produced by '80s British metal fan Chris Tsangarides. Unless you are the most ardent fan of the vocalist, his several solo records probably slipped through the cracks. Since then he's had a successful solo career, releasing a steady stream of albums. "Fingers crossed" is his 21st solo album. I loved his last solo album - "When I'm president", so was pleased to get his new one for review. Ian Hunter has chosen a diverse range of subjects to write about - the Greek god Morpheus, the Bow Street Runners, a visit to Union avenue in Memphis, and more. One song that jumps out and grabs your attention straight away is "Dandy", which is Ian Hunter's tribute to David Bowie. The two first worked together in 1972 when Bowie produced Mott the Hoople's album "All the young dudes". It's a great song, and one of my favourites on the album. The Tuxen Shuffle (6:06) Ibrahim Electric is an unusual trio that blends many stylistic influences including rock, blues, funk, and jazz. For this live performance at Copenhagen Jazzhouse, organist Jeppe Tuxen, guitarist Niclas Knudsen, and drummer Stefan Pasborg invited trombonist Ray Anderson to be their special guest. Without any rehearsals, they got together on-stage and wailed. The trio's "Fela" is a fast and funky number, with Anderson stealing the spotlight from the young Danes. The opening organ vamp to "Pet Pettostan" sounds very similar to the introduction to rocker John Fogerty's "Fortunate Son," though the piece quickly changes direction, with Anderson adding a mute for his blistering solo. "Formula" is a sassy vehicle inspired by good old-fashioned soul-jazz, though there is nothing formulaic about it, as Knudsen's guitar tells a story that will keep anyone's attention. "Lux" is an incredible ballad reminiscent of John Coltrane's more subtle compositions of the early '60s, not overly complex but slowly savored.
