Andreas was surrounded by high-quality music from a young age. Both his parents were professional jazz musicians, and Andreas became familiar with late-night gigs and the constant travel associated with performances, joining his parents on the road regularly. Apprenticed in musicianship by his parents and older brother, Andreas became a skilled guitarist and pianist, dedicating long hours to study and practice. His first band, Planet Waves, became a local success, playing a few important stages and recording an album entitled Brutal Awakenings before breaking up. Andreas took two years after Planet Waves' disintegration before releasing his solo debut, Cottonfish Tales. Though critically acclaimed, the record was less than a success commercially, making Johnson's sophomore effort a high-risk proposition. The first single released through his new contract with Warner Music Sweden, entitled "Glorious," wasted no time on its way to the top of the charts, making Johnson an overnight celebrity throughout Sweden and the U.K. Liebling sold an impressive 500,000 units and was followed by extensive touring, during which Johnson began work on his third solo record. Deadly Happy failed to live up to the sky-high standards set by its predecessor, leaving Johnson dejected and frustrated. Taking a long break from public commitments to return to a more natural and organic writing process for 2005's Mr. Johnson Your Room Is on Fire paid off, generating successful singles like "Show Me XXXX" and "Sunshine of Mine." Back on the road to pop stardom, Johnson released his fourth record with Warner in 2007, entitled The Collector. (Maple Blues, John Valentyne) Adopted at birth from the mean Cockney streets of London, England, Jack de Keyzer lived and breathed music from as early as he could remember. He was inspired by the primal rock 'n roll and blues of Elvis Presley, Gene Vincent, Chuck Berry, Eddie Cochran and Cliff Richard and got his first guitar from strangers at age 8. Immigrating to Hamilton Ontario in 1964 de Keyzer, in his early teens, began playing hits by the Beatles, Stones, Animals, and later Hendrix and Cream before being enlisted, at age 17, by international blues star King Biscuit Boy. De Keyzer toured Canada with King Biscuit Boy for several years before joining up with Rockabilly legend Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks. During the early '80s de Keyzer toured and recorded with Canadian Rockabilly hellions the Bop Cats and also played guitar with Robert Gordon, Otis Rush, Bo Diddley and Blue Rodeo, to name a few. De Keyzer struck out on his own in 1985 starting with a 5 year/3 nights a week residency at Toronto's fabled Isabella Hotel. Since then, his recordings have garnered 2 Juno wins, 7 Maple Blues awards, an international songwriting first place award and numerous Juno and Maple Blues nominations in every category from best album to entertainer to guitar player of the year. He has played stadiums, strip clubs, Prime Ministers residences, blues dives, theatres and festivals around the world. The music is quite impressionistic and atmospheric. Terrasson and Wilson stick to standards, but their renditions of such songs as "Old Devil Moon," "My Ship," "Tea for Two" and even "Tennessee Waltz" are quite haunting and floating, slightly disturbing and occasionally sensuous. Terrasson, who takes "Autumn Leaves" and "Chicago 1987" (the one non-standard) as solo pieces, was on his way to forming his own style, while Wilson had certainly found her niche. As Night Falls (4:49) Yvonnick Prene has called New York home since 2007, but jazz fans in and around the Big Apple and beyond can be forgiven if they lacked awareness about his harmonica skills until more recent times. His first album-the inviting Jour de F??te (SteepleChase Records, 2013)-took a while to arrive, so the only way to learn about Prene prior to 2013 was through word of mouth or a chance live encounter. Now, judging from his recent output, it appears that he's making up for lost time. Two more albums-Wonderful World (Self Produced, 2014) and Merci Toots (Self Produced, 2015)-came in quick succession after his debut, a full gigging calendar in the past few years has kept him in the public eye, and a flurry of writing and publishing activity has produced a good number of jazz harmonica educational publications from this rising star. And now there's Breathe. Prene's fourth album finds him working within an organ-centric setting. It's a first on record for him, but it sounds as if he's been dealing with this format forever. Everything from the lively "Blues Comes Down The Seine" to the gently waltzing "As Night Falls" sounds natural as can be. Those two pieces bookend the album, but what's in between-an easy grooving rendition of pianist Monty Alexander's "Got To Go," a charged original in tribute to the Tixier brothers, a joyful calypso number dubbed "The Comedian," and several other winners-is just as interesting. Prene's band here includes two veterans-organist Jared Gold and guitarist Peter Bernstein-and relative newcomer Allan Mednard on drums. For the most part, these four prove to be a simpatico set of players, ably supporting one another and playing off of each other. Mednard is occasionally a tad too heavy-handed for the topic at hand, evident in his crash-filled bossa nova backing on "Armorica," but that's just a small caveat.
