All My People (Boogie Back Remix) [03:18] Kindred the Family Soul is a Grammy-nominated adult contemporary R&B duo from Philadelphia consisting of husband and wife Fatin Dantzler and Aja Graydon. Big hit singles eluded them, but they developed a strong following that appreciated their unwavering dedication to releasing relatable and mature R&B. Throughout their career, Dantzler and Graydon co-wrote most of their songs, which were rooted in traditional soul and gospel. They incorporated nuanced contemporary sounds with help from co-producers such as Anthony Bell, Adam Blackstone, Vidal Davis, Andre Harris, Steve McKie, and James Poyser. Dantzler and Graydon began as solo performers. Dantzler was born in Philadelphia and got his start in the music business writing songs for Pebbles and Bell Biv DeVoe. Graydon, from Washington, D.C., had a solo deal at the age of 15. The two united and began writing songs, but then married and started a family, which necessitated the steady income of work outside the music business. After a time as an appliance salesman, however, Dantzler went back to trying to make it on the local scene. He and Graydon began performing at the Black Lily club, where they caught the attention of Jill Scott, who took them to her label, Hidden Beach Recordings. They spent the next two years working on the debut Kindred the Family Soul album, Surrender to Love, which was released in 2003. It featured an impressive cast of collaborators, including Scott, string arranger Larry Gold, Bilal, King Britt, and the then-upcoming Jazmine Sullivan. It was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best R&B/Soul Album. Kindred released two additional albums for Hidden Beach. In This Life Together, inspired by Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis' memoir of the same title, arrived in 2005. The Arrival, released three years later, was their highest-charting title to that point, reaching number 67 on the Billboard 200 and number seven on the R&B Albums chart. For their fourth album, Dantzler and Graydon moved to Shanachie, where they released 2011's Love Has No Recession, with guests ranging from go-go pioneer Chuck Brown to relative newcomer BJ the Chicago Kid. They were formed in 1970 in and around Houston from rival bands the Moving Sidewalks (Gibbons) and American Blues (Hill and Beard). Their first two albums reflected the strong blues roots and Texas humor of the band. Their third album (Tres Hombres) gained them national attention with the hit "La Grange," a signature riff tune to this day, based on John Lee Hooker's "Boogie Chillen." Their success continued unabated throughout the '70s, culminating with the year-and-a-half-long Worldwide Texas Tour. Exhausted from the overwhelming workload, they took a three-year break, then switched labels and returned to form with Deguello and El Loco, both harbingers of what was to come. By their next album, Eliminator, and its worldwide smash follow-up, Afterburner, they had successfully harnessed the potential of synthesizers to their patented grungy blues groove, giving their material a more contemporary edge while retaining their patented Texas style. Now sporting long beards, golf hats, and boiler suits, they met the emerging video age head-on, reducing their "message" to simple iconography. Becoming even more popular in the long run, they moved with the times while simultaneously bucking every trend that crossed their path. As genuine roots musicians, they have few peers; Gibbons is one of America's finest blues guitarists working in the arena rock idiom -- both influenced by the originators of the form and British blues-rock guitarists like Peter Green -- while Hill and Beard provide the ultimate rhythm section support. One of the few rock & roll group with its original members still aboard after four decades, ZZ Top play music that is always instantly recognizable, eminently powerful, profoundly soulful, and 100% American in derivation. They have continued to support the blues through various means, perhaps most visibly when they were given a piece of wood from Muddy Waters' shack in Clarksdale, MS. The group members had it made into a guitar, dubbed the "Muddywood," then sent it out on tour to raise money for the Delta Blues Museum. ZZ Top's support and link to the blues remains as rock solid as the music they play. A concert CD and DVD, Live from Texas, recorded in Dallas in 2007 and featuring a still vital band, were both released in 2008. Along with Robben Ford-another guitarist accused of being "too light," and with whom Carlton collaborated on the incendiary Live in Tokyo (335 Records, 2007)-Carlton shares the title of "tastiest guitarist in jazz," and Greatest Hits Rerecorded Volume One is the perfect starting point to understand why. Revisiting some of his more popular songs, Carlton brings bassist Travis Carlton (his son) and keyboardist Jeff Babko back from Live in Tokyo, fleshing things out to a quintet with ??ber-drummer Vinnie Colaiuta and saxophonist Paul Cerra. The music ranges from the undeniably poppy "Smiles and Smiles to Go" and bluesy "High Steppin'"-both from one of his bigger sellers, Alone/But Never Alone (MCA, 1986), where Carlton put down his Gibson ES335 hollowbody electric in favor of acoustic guitar-to his equally pop-centric but more change-heavy signature tune, "Room 335," from Larry Carlton (Warner Bros., 1978), and the slightly grittier, more forcefully grooving "All in Good Time," from On Solid Ground (MCA, 1989). But it's not all about light rhythms and pop-song accessibility. Carlton has, over the years, occasionally returned to the harder-edged, blues and rock-centric fusion that's been just as much a part of who he is, notably on albums like Sapphire Blue (Bluebird, 2004) and Fire Wire (Bluebird, 2006). Curiously, nothing is included from either of these fine discs, but Carlton does rework two powerful tracks from Renegade Gentleman (GRP, 1993), his rootsy collaboration with Nashville session ace, harmonicist Terry McMillan. Carlton may substitute saxophone for harmonica on the rocky "RCM" and fiery "Red Hot Poker," but the grit and grease remains fully intact. Whether on the easy-on-the-ears ballad of "Hello Tomorrow" or equally laidback "Terry T."- Carlton's tribute to keyboardist Terry Trotter, who played with the guitarist from the late-1970s through to the end of the 1980s-Carlton's ability to build sophisticated yet instantly memorable solos filled with lyrical invention is as uncanny as his immediately recognizable combination of singing, overdriven tone with evocative bends and searing runs. Compelling from start to finish, Greatest Hits Rerecorded Volume One doesn't necessarily bring a whole lot new to the table, but it does collect some of Carlton's more memorable tunes together.
