The album was released on June 3, 1977, just six months after an assassination attempt was made on Bob Marley's life in Jamaica in December, forcing him to flee to London, where Exodus was recorded. Good-Bye Last Swing Of The Century - Big Band Music of Benny Goodman released on Concord Jazz in 1999 by Benny Goodman Orchestra alumnus, Ken Peplowski, is a heartfelt tribute to The King of Swing and the wonderful arrangements he commissioned in the 1930s and 1940s. Recorded the last night of a 15-concert tour, the CD is the perfect collection of swing standards for those who dance or those that spectate. Ken Peplowski takes 16 essentials, long associated with one of the greatest names in jazz and reinteprets it with veterans of various Benny Goodman orchestras including Randy Sandke, Eddie Bert, Bobby Pring, Ben Aronov, Frank Capp and Jack Stuckey along with other brilliant musicians as Conte Candoli, Frank Vignola, Bob Milikan, Scott Robinson, Joe Romano, Rickey Woodard, and Richard Simon. Although the cliche that big bands will never come back is somewhat true, Ken Peplowski is the closest that some listeners near the end of this century will remember as bringing the music back to the '90s with taste, drive and creativity. Peplowski doesn't compromise the artistic integrity of his mentor even though each soloist is playing in their own style, with no re-creations of solos from old records! Popular standards such as "Let's Dance," "Moon Glow," "Bugle Call Rag," "Don't Be That Way," and the "King Porter Stomp," receive some of the very best arrangements they've ever had. On "Memories Of You," Ken spotlights Bobby Pring's trombone and the young, Frank Vignola's mellow guitar. He duets with Vignola on one of Goodman's favorites, "China Boy," originally recorded with Teddy Wilson and Gene Krupa in 1936. The clarinet of Ken Peplowski, taken up in honor of Goodman, is brilliant on this hard-swinging set of performances by his orchestra and serves as an excellent example of what can be done and has been done to the keep the music of the Big Band Era fresh and vital. Joan Cererols - Villancico a 8: Serafin que con dulce [Montserrat] Villancicos y Danzas Criollas is a homage to the cultural traditions of Iberia and Ibero-America, showing the influence of European traditions in the Americas. The Villancico (also called Chanzoneta) is a form of poetry that was adopted for use in secular songs and, in the 17th century, for Christmas carols (the modern usage of the word denotes a carol). The secular songs were gradually replaced by the Romance while the Christmas carol form became more popular. The typical lyrics of villancicos have two or three stanzas followed by a refrain. The most religious-oriented villancico of this collection is Hanacpachap Cussicuinin (from Lima) where the author asks for their prayer to be answered. The transmission of musical culture is a favorite (and fascinating) subject for Jordi Savall and this CD includes some beautiful and rousing music. The CD begins with four selections reflecting Iberian music that sets the stage of presenting a song (usually) followed by a dance. Following this introduction we are off the Americas and music from Peru, Guatemala and Mexico. As pointed out in the booklet, the colonial expansion that took place during the 15th and 16th centuries widen cultural connections to include Africa, Asia and the Americas, which is reflected in this collection of music. One will discover a mixing of African dance rhythms and percussion with European polyphony. This is nicely demonstrated by the first selection with its strong use of drums and bold brass playing combined with a fast-paced dance melody and mixed voices. The second work, by an anonymous composer, is quite a contrast with its more restrained and courtly rhythms played by string instruments without the percussion or brass. The Hanacpachap Cussicuinin is scored for percussion, brass and voices sounding like a solemn funeral procession and is followed by a beautifully played piece for harp and percussion from Mexico. The incomparable Montserrat Figueras sings with peerless passion and beauty, particularly in the short Tono Hidalgo of Juan Hidalgo. One could go on and on extolling the wonderful music of this CD, suffice it to say that among my collection of early music discs this one is at the top. As with all of Jordi Savall's recordings the performance is excellent and beautifully balanced with voices and instruments receiving equal emphasis. If a Paul Anka or Laurie London, a Connie Francis or Vera Lynn were suddenly able to sing in the German language, why should not the opposite way throw off one or other hit beyond the borders? And so it came about that long established producers like Peter Kraus, Freddy Quinn, Manuela, Ted Herold and many others in the recording studio again found - with English lyrics in front of the nose. The resulting singles remained almost exclusively exotics. Today, about forty years after its formation, many of these discs are sought. This fine and interesting CD is the soundtrack of the movie Eu Tu Eles (Me You Them) and also a tribute from Gilberto Gil to Luiz Gonzaga, one of the most influential Brazilian artists during the 20th century. Gonzaga is widely known as the King of the Bai??o, and played a key role in developing and popularizing the different music styles of the Brazilian Northeast, such as bai??o, xote, and forr??. Very much true to rugged, unpolished sound of the original versions, yet managing to add his own unique and personal style, Gil interprets several Gonzaga classics such as "Assum Preto," "Asa Branca," "Juazeiro," and "Qui Nem Jil??." Gil also wrote a few songs of his own especially for this movie soundtrack, such as "As Pegadas do Amor" and the nice and mellow "Lamento Sertanejo." Gil also interprets songs by other bai??o artists, such as the excellent and vibrant "Esperando na Janela" (written by Manuca, Raimundinho do Acordeon, and Targino Gondim), which was a major hit in Brazil in 2000. This is one of Gil's best albums since the '70s and also a very authentic and down-to-earth tribute to the old masters of the popular music of the Brazilian Northeast region.
