He is primarily known for his work with Whitesnake having written or co-written with David Coverdale many of the group's hit songs, such as "Here I Go Again". Having played with Glenn Cornick's Wild Turkey in 1974, he then played with Babe Ruth, from 1975-76, before becoming an original member of Paice Ashton Lord in 1977 and then joining the hard rock band, Whitesnake, after having the possibility of playing with his boy-time hero Paul McCartney and Wings because while waiting, David Coverdale asked him to form Whitesnake. In more recent years, Marsden has toured with his bands Company of Snakes, M3 (both formed with fellow former Whitesnake members Micky Moody and Neil Murray), and performed with Elkie Brooks. Over the years he has taken part in a number of sessions and has released a handful of solo albums (And About Time, Too!, Look at Me Now, Green & Blues, Stacks). He has also collaborated with Micky Moody on a number of Marsden-Moody live and studio projects. On the Sweden Rock Festival on 10 June 2011 Bernie Marsden played with Whitesnake for the first time since 1981, thus becoming the second of only two former Whitesnake band members who have played with Whitesnake in recent years, the other person being Adrian Vandenberg, who also played with them on the Sweden Rock Festival. In the last ten years, Marsden has been involved in very different projects. The most unusual being two engagements at the National Theatre in London for Nickolas Hytner's productions of Shakespeare's "The Winter's Tale" and "Henry the V" in collaboration with Simon Webb. Also, he appeared in ZDF television in Germany for their production of "Frankie", a six-part TV special. After this, Marsden has worked alongside Robert Plant, Paul Weller, Ian Paice and Jon Lord for The Sunflower Jam charity concert in London. Bernie also played Guitar with Ringo Starr and his son Zak Starkey in Monte Carlo. Most recently, he has been playing and writing for guitar virtuoso Joe Bonamassa. For someone who likes Texas and Russell's brand of country music, the act of researching his life and misadventures could be fun if it weren't for one thing: all the juicy stuff -- including Russell's stint in jail -- that's been printed about the singing American cowboy is in French. Sometimes it's in another European language. Far less often will you find any significant write-ups in the language of his birthplace, and that's because Russell found his greatest success, professionally and personally, far from home. He is a business owner; the proprietor of a Swiss nightclub. His wife is Swiss. A good percentage of his albums were recorded in Europe. The singer/songwriter was one of nine children born to his working-class parents, Red and Daisy. The family lived on an unpaved road, not far from the town's wrecking yard. His mom was a waitress in the same little caf?? where his dad did the cooking. Calvin Russell, their sixth child, spent his youth putting together hot-rod cars. Before he turned 13, he'd discovered the guitar. Within a year, Russell was playing with an outfit called the Cavemen. A wild time during his teens brought him to the attention of local authorities, who sent him to juvenile detention and, later, prison. At one point in the mid-'80s, he did time in a Mexican jail, where he spent his nights on a cold concrete floor. Upon his release, he headed back to his hometown, where his condition didn't improve much. He made his bed outdoors, in the small area beneath a house, in the dirt. Russell took to the open road on a motorcycle and began to write his songs in the Texas hill country. By 1985, he had a single to his credit. Thanks to a chance meeting with record company executive Patrick Mathe four years later at Austin's Continental Club, Russell landed a contract with the French company that would release many of his albums, New Rose Records. Russell later went on to sign with Sony after New Rose Records folded. New Rose's release of Russell's A Crack in Time album in 1990 caused a stir for the artist, and he started picking up quite a bit of attention. He went on to play festivals in Europe alongside such artists as the Kinks and Little Village. Three more albums followed from New Rose. Le Voyageur is a recording of live shows performed by Russell in such French cities as Rennes and Paris. When the record company was sinking and its assets frozen in bankruptcy proceedings, Russell was very close to having his career tied up in the company's legal woes. Dick Rivers, who had a career decades earlier in pop, rescued Russell when he purchased the singer/songwriter's contract. Floating (06:12) Kozmodrum definitely went for taste on their second LP, Gravity, surpassing their 2016 Na Tragu Satellita in both production and sound. Award-winning classical drummer Janko NovoseliÄ? refreshed his re[beeep]es with heartier helpings of ambient and post-rock. The ensemble of Goran Delac, Elvis Penava, Ivan Kapec and Hrvoje Galler make up his backing band from Croatia, based in the capital Zagreb, and the five together make "organic dance" music. At its height, it's a marriage of boom-bap bass and staccato snare. NovoseliÄ?'s compositions layer in his masterful drums throughout, particularly on opener "Jezgra" and in the second half of "Mountain Lion." The only song with lyrics features Croatian pop singer Mario Huljev, who evokes a fortitude in the face of loneliness on "Whisper" in somewhat broken English. Whether his sentence structure is complete or not, though, it's the breakneck pace of the percussion and harp-like synth that drown out the meaning. A few times in the short but stocky LP, ambient intros deliver the danceable tunes very slowly. The final shimmering "Floating" is beautiful, but not much of a closer. And calling "F109" dance music doesn't make sense; it shines and blooms into "Otok Potok," but the latter could have carried the moveable momentum of "Mountain Lion" onward without the transitional track. "Mountain Lion" is a near-perfect dish, though, like a childhood favourite made simple and soulful by a master chef. Popping drums and a slow wail explode into a mouthful of sub-bass and chutzpah, as Delac prowls through a bass line that rips your face off and NovoseliÄ? carries the beat beautifully - it really is delicious.
