Obviously designed to showcase the whole of Hancock's career post his 2007 Grammy win for River: The Joni Letters, Then and Now doesn't really give you the full picture. With only five tracks devoted to his '60s/'70s recordings (arguably his most essential and defining period), there's just not enough "then" here to really qualify this as a "definitive" collection. Not to mention that Then and Now basically ignores Hancock's '70s recordings, opting for merely an "edit" of "Chameleon" and the album version of "Watermelon Man," which comes out of chronological order near the end of the collection. Spartacus Love Theme (10:07) Soil & "Pimp" Sessions are a Japanese jazz combo who play music inspired by the sound and style of classic bebop, Latin jazz, and cool jazz, but with a funky undertow and the passion, aggression, and force of rock & roll. The group features five musicians -- Josei on piano, Tabu Zombie on trumpet, Motoharu on sax, Akita Goldman on double bass, and Midorin on drums -- as well as Shacho, credited as "agitator and spirit," who prowls the stage as the group performs and occasionally offers gravel-voiced encouragement. The group first came together when Tabu Zombie and Shacho began appearing at dance clubs featuring jazz nights; as DJs spun groove jazz sides, Zombie would jam along on his horn as Shacho worked the crowd, and the response was strong enough that they eventually formed the band to play full live sets without the DJs. As Soil & "Pimp" Sessions' reputation on the Tokyo club scene grew, in 2003 they became the first unsigned band invited to appear at the Fuji Rock Festival, and in 2004 they released their first album for JVC Victor, Pimpin', which was followed by a steady stream of albums and EPs. Giles Peterson, the British DJ who launched the Acid Jazz label, took notice of Soil & "Pimp" Sessions, and after giving them steady airplay on his BBC radio show invited them to play London in 2005. The combo signed with Peterson's Brownwood Records label for Europe and the U.K., and soon became regulars on the international festival circuit, impressing audiences with their energy and instrumental skill. When Tim Garland took on a job as composer-in-residence at nearby Newcastle university he decided to buy a house - near St. Mary s Lighthouse. For his CD If The Sea Replied Garland recorded several bass clarinet solos in the lighthouse which he later orchestrated. During his work he had the idea of presenting the project live and for this he needed fellow musicians - and the Lighthouse Trio was born. Garland taught Gwilym Simcock at London s Royal Academy of Music. The Welsh pianist, whose award-winning solo album Good Days at Schloss Elmau finally gave him star status, forms together with Garland one of the most productive partnerships around (they also work in Malcolm Creese's 'Acoustic Triangle'). The Israeli conjurer of sound - drummer and percussionist in one - Asaf Sirkis quickly became one of the most interesting trendsetters of the jazz and world music scene after his move to London, including work as hand drummer in Gilad Atzmon's Orient House Ensemble. But it was for the Lighthouse Trio that he developed an especially composed drum set which is tailored for music full of rhythmic surprises, and perfect to showcase his ability to create unusual sounds. A celtic influence surfaces on some of the trio's material, unsurprising given Simcock's birthplace (Bangor, North Wales) and Tim's musical history (incl. British Folk/Jazz group 'Lammas' for many years). Strong, distinctive melodies and bounding folk-tinged rhythms underpin the music, along with many other influences from around the world and some tributes to a few of the great musicians of recent British contemporary music history. Time To Move (2:58) Guy Forsyth grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, where he became a street-smart entertainer, who worked, among other things, as a comic stuntman at renaissance faires. In order to develop more as a musician he moved in January 1990 to Austin, Texas. Here he soon had his own band, and he found work in bars - like Joe's Generic Bar, that didn't pay him but would let him play for tips. It was in this bar, in the spring of 1993, that his performance was seen by Sjef Willemen, a.k.a. Doc O-Zone, who was so overwhelmed with it, that at that spot, he decided to start a record company, Lizard Discs. A few months later, on June 18, 1993, the performance of the Guy Forsyth Band was recorded at Metropool in Hengelo, the Netherlands. This was a legendary show that lasted till 5:00 a.m., an exhausting event for both band and audience, but what a great show! This resulted a year later in the release of the 1st CD of Guy and Lizard Discs: "High Temperature". This was followed by a European tour, with highly successful performances at the Blues Festival in Peer, Belgium and in Notodden, Norway, later followed by the Bluesrock Festival in Tegelen, the Netherlands. In December 2013 a new blues CD was recorded in Austin, Texas, by Andre Zweers and Stuart Sullivan from Wire Recording. This has become a wonderful, varied CD, called "The Pleaser " which will be released along with "Red Dress" the "High Temperature"companion disc.. Wild American [04:51] The backstory to Ali Beletic's debut LP goes something like this: Installation artist moves from New York City to the desert Southwest and finds musical inspiration in the area's nature and mythology. Of course, the reality is much more complex, but this synopsis does capture the mystic and free-spirited character of Legends of These Lands Left to Live, an album that came together over the course of several years. Beletic's longtime partner Seth Olinsky (Akron/Family) is a major figure in the story, having also co-produced and co-engineered the record. Our heroine, though, is Beletic, who opens the album with a bluesy guitar riff that not only introduces her musical persona, but also turns out to be pretty much the entire musical substance of "Ends of the Earth," a love letter to their adventures. The album as a whole is a gritty, instinctive sort of work without a lot of structured songwriting or, for that matter, chords. Lyrics, mettle, and dusty atmosphere are its nuts and bolts. Outright rock songs here include "Dead Serious" and the anthemic "Stone Fox" on a set list otherwise made up of mostly what could be called guitar poems. Songs like "Lit Museum" and "Brilliant White Heat" fall somewhere in between. In addition to Beletic's husky half-whisper, the latter features rhythmic pitch-bending that summons images of heat haze. A bass drum keeps steady time and suggests plodding toward the mirage. This kind of imagery, both lyrical and musical, pervades the record and proves to be its most memorable quality. Now, if recordings had that same requirement, Everything Is Cool from Giacomo Gates might read this way: "Ingredients: 100% genuine talent and devotion to the true art of jazz vocalizing. All natural and swinging ingredients. No artificial jive, smooth jazz, or ju-ju. Organic, filled with mojo, and very much the Real Deal, Baby!" You see, Gates is an adoring acolyte to one of jazz's most honored traditions the hard-swinging male jazz vocalist. No smooth, well-coiffed crooner or re-homogenized "package," this blues-collared Cat carries the torch that "Dippermouth" lit when he opened his and began to scat on Perdido Street. That flame was handed down, flickering through artists such as Babs Gonzales (whom Gates highlights here), Jon Hendricks, and Eddie Jefferson. However, Gates drives his own iron in this superior effort and this one's as cool as it gets. The selections, perfectly selected for Gates hip style, tip the beret rakishly to Mr. Gonzalez ("Everything Is Cool," "When Lovers They Lose," "Here Today and Gone Tomorrow"), as well acknowledging other boy hipsters, including Oscar Brown Jr. ("Hazel Hips"), Lenny Bruce ("All Alone"), Frank Rosolino ("Please Don't Bug Me"), Thelonious Monk (Well You Needn't"), Dave Brubeck ("Take Five"), et al. The repertoire is an acknowledgement and fine presentation of great jazz material and is testimony to Gates' enormous versatility, dramatic range, and even hip humor ("If I Were You Baby, I'd Love Me"). Vocally, Gates is a ballsy baritone who offers more swings than a big city park. His rhythmic sense -one festooned with syncopated upbeats is swingingly instrumental. He can taffy-pull a beat's heart with the best of them and does so here. And, his lyric delivery has a speak-song flair to it which provides a pungent, yet attractive seasoning, bringing those black dots on the staff to jazz life. Gates' dramatic sense, one robust and filled with obvious life-experience overtones, is evidently displayed on the superb balladic material (Bruce's "All Alone" and Elvis Costello's "Almost Blue"). The accompanying crew here is indeed up for the date, with guitarist Tony Lombardozzi and pianist John J. DiMartino (both frequent Gates sidekicks) standing out, but not on anyone's toes. Saxophonist Grant Stewart is a hair reserved here, but covers his solos admirably. Bassist Ed Howard and drummer Willard Dyson provide whiplash momentum for the stagecoach when needed and offer tasteful textures when not. Giacomo Gates may not have his dough, notoriety, or "square"-ish black-rimmed glasses, but, after digging what's richly served up in Everything Is Cool, that other Gates might very well be in the market for shades, a black beret, and finger-popping lessons. Thanks in part to the more rigid beat, Benson pares down his style to its rhythmic essentials, refusing to spray notes all over the place at random, and as a result, the record cooks and dances. His treatment of Vince Guaraldi's "Cast Your Fate to the Wind," hugely complemented by Joe Farrell's wistfully prancing flute, is a mini-masterpiece in the use of space, of hitting exactly the right stabbing note right in the pocket. Again, Creed Taylor turns to a James Brown alumnus, David Matthews, for arrangements, and he discreetly and wisely stays out of Bad George's way. Buy this one for "Cast Your Fate," but there is plenty more to savor here. Benson & Farrell: This little-known CTI recording matches guitarist George Benson and Joe Farrell, a multi-reed player who mostly sticks to flute. Joined by a large rhythm section and sometimes two other flutists (including Eddie Daniels), Benson and Farrell play four originals by session arranger Dave Matthews, plus the standard "Old Devil Moon." This pleasing if not all that memorable instrumental date was recorded right after Benson's Breezin' (and before its release), ending the guitarist's CTI period right before he became a vocal star. The inarguably mongrel Housebound Demigod is G.H.'s debut solo album, following the Ground EP (2011) and his involvement with the hexed Pendle Coven project & HATE, alongside Miles Whittaker and Andy Stott, respectively, between 2003 - 2009. It sounds like nothing out there; the result of countless hours at the grindstone, using sound as tonal therapy and a purely expressive sculptural material to best render the feel of his bleak but extraordinarily beautiful surroundings with all the rugged texture and captivating aesthetic of some ancient cave graffiti. The album unfolds as a treacherous topography of boggy drones, entrenched subbass and deforested, windswept feedback, strewn with the charred remains of black metal in opener Screaming Demon Pickups and the hollow-eyed stare down of Angels & Doormen, or prone to bury the senses with unpredictable slow techno mudslides in Mickey Cosmos or the subsidence of Packhorse. He often underlines that physicality with a drily ambiguous wit; check the bitterly clipped narrative on Yorkshire Fog, or, equally, when he puts all his weight behind the stylus-troubling, bestial shudder of Devils Bit Scabious, and you can't shake the feeling that he's gurning like an evil loon behind the rotten torque of the album's titular parting shot. There are few composers more dynamic and startling in originality than Berlioz, and his Harold en Italie is one of the most innovative works in the Romantic repertoire: part symphonic poem avant la lettre, based on Lord Byron's poem, Childe Harold's Pilgrimage; part autobiographical symphony, in the manner of its immediate predecessor, the Symphonie fantastique; and part concerto, for the viola soloist. Gergiev maintains a strong tension from the outset, and paces Harold en Italie with an urgency and emotional fire that are rare, and violist Antoine Tamestit brings a dramatic flair to his part, in contrast with more purely lyrical interpretations that tend toward the introspective. In the cantata, La mort de Cl??op??tre, mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill projects a similar kind of intensity and presence, and the lyricism and passion of the music is heightened in her collaboration with Gergiev and the LSO. The sound of this hybrid SACD is vivid and close-up, so every detail of the performances can be heard, as well as some incidental noises in the live setting.
