Angle Of Repose - Reprise After establishing a solid reputation as part of the fusion collective Lost Tribe and as a sideman with the likes of Michael and Randy Brecker, Ravi Coltrane, and others, guitarist Adam Rogers is flexing his considerable chops as a leader. Allegory , his sophomore effort, adds tenor saxophonist Chris Potter to Rogers' quartet with pianist Edward Simon, bassist Scott Colley, and drummer Clarence Penn. It features ten original compositions that display his quirky, syncopated melodies and clean, fluid guitar style over driving (and often odd-time) rhythms. Potter's saxophone adds weight to the melodies, many of them played in unison with Rogers' guitar. The arrangements are straight-ahead with pronounced heads and solo sections. But the interplay between the musicians and their improvisatory abilities keeps things unpredictable. On "Phyrigia," Colley plays a thematic bass solo over the Eastern-like changes, and Potter blisters through the upper registers of the tenor during his lead, prodded by Penn's flourishes. "Genghis" also features a guitar-saxophone melody, which slowly unfolds over a plodding, funky groove. Rogers displays his classical guitar technique on "Red Leaves," a spacious ballad that also features a lyrical bass solo. "Angle of Repose" is another unhurried piece with room for the musicians to explore the sparse melodic movement. Conversely, "Cleveland" is an energetic piece with melodic twists and turns over which the musicians solo adeptly. To celebrate the release of Allegory , Rogers performed two sold-out sets at the Jazz Gallery last month. Bassist James Genus and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts provided the rhythm for him and Potter. As on the recording, "Confluence" kicked things off and Watts' relentless ride-cymbal propelled the leader's first solo. Watts and Potter had several spirited exchanges and the drummer seemed to push the saxophonist to dig deeper into the tunes and Potter ably accepted the challenge. The bluesy vamp "Purpose" got an especially raucous workout, highlighted by Watts' only solo of the first set. The show had a raw, kinetic energy often originating from the rhythm section, which provided a solid foundation for the soloists. Look no further than the title to summarize this New Orleans veteran's music on his first studio set in nearly a decade. Bookending the album with the two-part "Shake Your Booty/Funky Thing" ensures that the proceedings start and end with the rump-shaking, horn-propelled R&B that, along with jazz, soul, and blues, makes Walter "Wolfman" Washington's music so much a part of his Crescent City home. He's never been particularly prolific, but after the long span between releases - partially due to the effects and aftereffects of Hurricane Katrina - the Wolf sounds electrified and inspired here. The second track, "I'm Back," tells that story against an urgent groove that keeps the party atmosphere while recounting the hurricane's devastation and his attempts to get the city and its people to return to a place that will never be the same. Wolf emits one of his patented howls on "Tweakin'," pushing the bumping rhythm into overdrive as the horns punctuate the choruses. His nimble guitar licks, somewhat similar to those of George Benson, offset the harder edge, bringing sensitivity and subtlety to the upbeat, get-down proceedings. Bluesy ballads "One Day from Being a Fool" and the low-key second line of "Crescent City Starlights" vary the mood while allowing Washington to explore his considerable vocal chops, which range from smooth to gritty. He swings like "Gatemouth" Brown on "Just Like That," a song from bassist Jack Cruz, who co-wrote four others with the guitarist. It's these tunes that make this arguably the finest entry in Washington's catalog. Each boasts hummable melodies and finger-snapping arrangements that play to the artist's strengths without overwhelming them. Wolfman (wearing his producer hat) and saxophonist Jimmy Carpenter (who also arranged the horns so integral to the sound) can take credit for much of this project's success by keeping the vibe taut yet raw enough to let the considerable soul shine through. The album doesn't break new ground, but shows Washington to be on top of his game with an invigorating set that will make you move your body with music that connects on every level. Herbie's Lament 10. I Wish I Knew Walt Weiskopf performs seven standards and three originals on this quartet set with pianist Joel Weiskopf, bassist Drew Gress and drummer Steve Davis. Weiskopf, who has written an instructional book on John Coltrane's style, sounds too close for comfort to 'Trane on this otherwise enjoyable set. Blues In My Heart Love Me Tonight is the newest CD from a major musical talent, Mr. John N??meth. He just happens to possess amazing vocal range and flexibility, is a first-rate harp player and is still only in his early 30s. Nothing reinforces his possession of these talents more than the blues artists who have wanted to play with him. Junior Watson recruited N??meth to sing in his band for a time, and appears as featured guitar player on 2 of N??meth's CD releases. Elvin Bishop plays guitar on 2 cuts on this album (Country Boy and Daughter of the Devil), and brought 2 members of his band along to provide background vocals. Elvin also tasked John with singing on 4 tracks on Bishop's most recent studio CD, The Blues Rolls On (see the review for that CD on STLBlues.net). As if all of that wasn't enough, Anson Funderburgh asked N??meth to fill in for Sam Myers in the Rockets during the time Sam fell seriously ill. That gig lasted 2 years. John N??meth is originally from Boise, Idaho. He first started singing in church, and at 17 a friend exposed him to the blues via the music of Jr. Wells. Wells has been a major influence on John ever since, with John saying "I had never heard anything like it. I listened to that song (Snatch It Back and Hold It) and the record Hoodoo Man Blues for hours". While still in his late teens, N??meth and his friends formed the band Fat John & The 3 Slims, quickly becoming fan favorites in the Boise area. John independently released his 1st CD under his own name, titled The Jack of Harps, in 2002. Eventually, he moved away from Boise, arriving in San Francisco in 2004. From there, he independently released another CD, called Come and Get It, featuring Junior Watson and his band behind him (John). Wave Do we need another set of Jobim tunes? some listeners may be tempted to ask. To which the only appropriate response is: "Why not?" Alto saxophonist Vincent Herring certainly makes a good case for one more with this relaxed run-through of eight of the Brazilian singer-songwriter's works. The explicit theme pairing Jobim's music with romance treads on the toes of the obvious, but it is the only false step in this delightful dance. Herring, who picks up the tenor for the closer, "Wave," is joined in his efforts by guitarist Romero Lubambo, pianist Gary Fisher, bassist Nilson Matta, and drummer Duduka Da Fonseca. Lubambo is particularly apt in his stylings, the soft resonance of gut strings being so much in keeping with the traditions of Brazilian popular music. As fine an example of funky jazz fusion and virtuoso bass guitar playing as you will ever hear. Bassist Victor Bailey returns with his strongest and most consistent effort to date,titled Slippin' N' Trippin'. Bailey states "on this record I wanted to feature more of my bass guitar than on my other cd's. I'm also a versatile keyboardist,vocalise a little, and play a little drums too". Although gifted with an attractive voice in the alto range, Lane evidently didn't make much of an impression with record buyers, as this also seems to be the only recording under her name. This doesn't mean this is a bad record; in fact, she shows a lot of promise for a first-time recording artist, assisted by Pete Candoli's swinging arrangements and a supporting cast that also includes Jimmy Rowles, Barney Kessel, Alvin Stoller, and Joe Mondragon, along with a host of additional percussionists. His skill at several instruments more than makes up for his average vocal abilities, and if he's primarily known as a bandleader, there's a great deal to be said for providing the proving ground for musicians like Clapton, Peter Green, and Mick Fleetwood. Silver Tones is rife with strong material, from the up-tempo smoothness of the opening "Mail Order Mystics" to the nice, slow shuffle of "I Could Cry" to the rock-out groove of "Ain't No Brakeman."
