During 1955-1957 she was one of Bethlehem's few non-jazz artists although being with that label resulted in her interacting with veteran jazz musicians. In 1957 when it looked like folk music was going to be the next big trend (it would be, but not until the early '60s), she recorded a set of traditional melodies while accompanied by brass and string orchestra arranged by Russ Garcia that included West Coast jazz players (including Maynard Ferguson, Don Fagerquist, and Frank Rosolino). Faye was not the most subtle of singers but she sounds quite expressive on such numbers as "Frankie and Johnny," "St. James Infirmary," "John Henry," a variety of ancient folk songs, and even "Clementine." I Wanna Be Loved By You With her husband Steve Lawrence, Eydie Gorme, who has died aged 84, was one of the last survivors of an American show-business tradition that dated back to the big-band era and the golden age of lounge entertainment. Their stock-in-trade was their mastery of the classic American popular song, coupled with a comic act they had been developing since they first met in the early 1950s. Outside the duo Steve and Eydie, they both enjoyed successful solo careers. Gorme reached No 10 in Britain in 1962 with Yes, My Darling Daughter, and had a US top 10 hit the following year with Blame It on the Bossa Nova. The latter earned her a Grammy nomination for best female vocal performance and became something of a trademark song. She was born Edith Gormezano in the Bronx, New York City. Her mother was Turkish, her father, a tailor, was Sicilian, and both were Sephardic Jews. The youngest of three children, brought up speaking English and Spanish, Gorme worked as a Spanish interpreter with the UN after graduating from William Howard Taft high school in 1946. But having sung in a band at school, she was determined to make a career in the entertainment business. All Members With a multi-octave voice similar to Betty Carter's, incredible scatting ability, and ease of transition from a throaty whisper to high-pitched trills, Cleo Laine was born in 1927 in the Southall section of London, the daughter of a Jamaican father and English mother. Her parents sent her to vocal and dance lessons as a teenager, but she was 25 when she first sang professionally, after a successful audition with the big band led by Johnny Dankworth. Both Laine and the band recorded for Esquire, MGM and Pye during the late '50s, and by 1958, she was married to Dankworth. With Dankworth by her side, Laine began her solo career in earnest with a 1964 album of Shakespeare lyrics set to Dankworth's arrangements, Shakespeare: And All That Jazz. Laine also gained renown for the first of three concert albums recorded at New York's Carnegie Hall, 1973's Cleo Laine Live! At Carnegie Hall. She also recorded two follow-ups (Return to Carnegie and The 10th Anniversary Concert) the latter of which in 1983 won her the first Grammy award by a Briton. She has proved a rugged stage actress as well, winning a Theater World award for her role in the Broadway musical The Mystery of Edwin Drood, (in addition to Tony and Drama Desk nominations as well). In 1976 she recorded a jazz version of Porgy and Bess with Ray Charles, and also recorded duets with James Galway and guitarist John Williams. Christian Dozzler from Vienna, Austria is regarded as one of Europe's most versatile and respected blues musicians. The multi-instrumentalist has been performing all over the world for over 30 years, can be heard on some 30 blues CDs, and has made the US his home in 2000. It all began, when he heard boogie woogie on the radio for the first time at age 13. He immediately quit his classical piano lessons and dove head-on into the world of blues and boogie woogie. In his first band a few years later, he also played guitar and harmonica besides piano and vocals. Later, he added the accordion in the cajun/zydeco style. For nearly 10 years, Christian was the co-frontman of Vienna's highly reputed Mojo Blues Band. Working with a long list of US-blues artists on their European tours has widened his musical horizon and made him an experienced player in several different styles of blues music. From 1993 till 2000 he took his own band Blues Wave on the road all over Europe, and released 4 CDs that received international critical acclaim. He won awards in Austria for "Blues Artist of the Year" and "Best Blues CD of the Year", and was nominated as "Best European Blues Artist" and "Best European Blues Singer" at the Trophees Blues France awards. In the year 2000, Christian moved to the US to further his career. For 2 years he toured the world with Louisiana-based blues man Larry Garner, before settling in the Dallas/Fort Worth, TX area. Here he has continued his solo-career and released his fifth CD "All Alone And Blue" in spring 2003, going back to his personal roots in piano blues and boogie woogie. Windmill Hill Sometimes, combining seriousness of intent and high musicianship with pure fun is just the thing one needs, and is exemplified by Saturday Songs from tenor saxophonist Chris Cheek. Cheek does not make a lot records as a leader (see Blues Cruise from 2006), but is on literally scores of albums as a sideman (see Paul Motian's Garden of Eden from 2006 and Chris Lightcap's Epicenter from 2015), or his own discography, which is not completely up to date. In any event, Saturday Songs shares quite a bit of the vibe of Lightcap's latest release. Here, as there we have a sterling band playing the leader's compositions and arrangements (with one exception, Tom Jobim's "Forever Green"), but with perhaps less of an inspirational connection among the tunes than Lightcap. The band is made up of guitarist Steve Cardenas (who played with Cheek on Garden of Eden, David Soler on pedal steel, Jorge Rossy on drums, vibes and marimba (perhaps best know from Brad Mehldau's trio) and Jaume Llombard on bass. Although this is Cheek's records, he allocates plenty of space for the others, and in fact, Soler almost steals the record. While the tunes as a set do not overtly exhude "Americana," the ubiquitous presence of Soler's pedal steel does locate the record's overall feel within that genre (with the exception of "Saturday Song," which sounds decidedly exotic). On the other hand, "Alhambros" which references the Alhambra's architecture, does not sound either Indian or Islamic. The tracks are very easy to listen to, since the the details of construction and arrangement are so well woven into the texture, but are not "easy listening"; any number of them ought to get quite a bit of airplay. Each track has its own "personality" and the album contains a wide range of moods. Stand out tracks include "Bucky's Blues" which eventually becomes a coolly grooving jazzy blues, the nonchalant drive of "Ginger Something," the very pretty "While You Slept" with its long, unfolding melody, "Strawberry Jam"'s attractive higher energy and open improvisations and the slow and easy Jobim tune, "Forever Green." This compilation of Webb's Decca recordings covers his career from its beginnings in 1929 and emphasizes his band's instrumental prowess. Arrangements by the altoists Benny Carter and Edgar Sampson gave the band a style that was advanced for the day, while Webb's brilliant sense of swing cemented the ensemble's popularity with dancers and made him the model for drummers such as Jo Jones and Gene Krupa. The tightly rehearsed band explodes with precision on the leader's feature, "Clap Hands! I'm dead serious. If you love Zappa's GRAND WAZOO, Embryo's ROCKSESSION, Return to Forever's NO MYSTERY, or Mahavishnu Orchestra's BIRDS OF FIRE, then you WILL LOVE THIS ALBUM! I've been a fan of Mariano's sax playing, as well as his world music-jazz fusion for awhile, even tho I never looked into buying any of his solo albums. CHARLIE MARIANO started out playing with Mingus (Black Saint and the Sinner Woman). Then, he moved to Europe, and started to play with various bands there, in particular EMBRYO. (Check out Embryo's 1972 album WE KEEP ON, as well as SURFIN, or BAD HEADs and BAD CATS.) Not only does Charlie play Sax with Embryo, and on MIRRORS, he plays bass flute and nagasauram, a type of indian reed instrument. His mastery of not only western jazz on the sax, but india scales and talas, creates a style which fuses not only jazz and rock, but also the sounds of India. MIRROR is his masterpiece. First, consider the band: TONY LEVIN on BASS. Levin played with King Crimson from 1982 until recently, as well as with Peter Gabriel's early solo albums, and a ton of session work. DAVID SPINOZZA on Guitar. David played on John Lennon's MIND GAMES, as well as Yoko Ono's solo work, and McCartney's RAM. PAT REBILLOT on electric piano, played with everyone from Herbie Mann to Hall and Oats. AIRTO MOREIRA on Percussion. Airto got his name playing on Mile's BITCHES BREW, LIVE EVIL, and helped formed both WEATHER REPORT and RETURN TO FOREVER. His solo albums on CTI records are brazillian rock jazz fusion, and are funked up. The drummer is Ray Lucas. Anyway, this band just gells, rocks, grooves, and does everything a band CAN do. The album opens with HIMALAYA, a nice mid tempo jazz rock number, that trades fours between the bass line and the sax for the head. Not only does Mariano's sax sound fantastic, he merges with the band on some metaphysical level. He's in the pocket, yet plays out JUST ENOUGH to keep his lines from sounding smooth, or contrived. As his solo ends and David Spinozza picks up the lead on guitar, you'll want to stop time to hang on every note. Next comes SHOUT, a jazz blues number, that helps create the kalidascope of jazz styles on the album. F MINOR HAPPY works as a funk jazz song, tho also sounds a LOT like Zappa's work from 1973 as well. However, NOTHING on this album sounds dated, or passe. Spinozza's guitar solos sound as if they could have been lifted from a MEDINSKI MARTIN AND WOOD album. Next comes THEME FROM SUMMER OF '42, where Mariano switches to BASS FLUTE. The ribato tempo, keyboard arpeggios, and perfectly placed percussion overdubs, slows the pace way down. His bass flute lines are introspective, and contemplative. Yet the song completely lacks saccharine production, or bland orchrestration. Tony Levin's bass playing keeps the song rooted deep and cool. Next, MIRROR (the song) starts out with some free jazz sax riffs, before settling into its head and slow groove. The magic here? ASHA PUTHLI's vocals, layered inside the mix, and not on top. Check out how she harmonizes with herself, while the sax plays in tandem with the vocal lead. This song defies definition, tho free jazz-blues rock-soul music, MIGHT come close. Spinozza's guitar leads move from jazz to blues twang, often in the same line. And, the keyboard solo on this song will sooth the soul, and amaze you all over again, with how the band mutual empathy. VASI BINDU starts out with some nice keyboard tonal riffs, not unlike Bill Evans on BLUE ON GREEN. Here's another song that's mostly ribato, until about two minutes in, when it hits a sort of groove, as Tony Levin stops bowing his bass, and lays down the law, with a nice, open, spacey bass line. Some of his lines sound lifted from Mingus. As always, Mariano's sax is impeccably tasteful. Airto's percusssion overdubs provide the colors that create the movement. If this song reminds me of anything, I'd link it to one of the slow numbers by WEATHER REPORT's early period. Finally, MADRAS is world fusion jazz, in the best sense of the word.
