Help Me Just This Time (5:22) I just had the opportunity to review the newest release, Way Back Home, from the Backtrack Blues Band and it's solid. Opening with Going to Eleuthera, a snappy shuffle, Sonny Charles leads the way on lead vocals and Kid Royal is hot on his heels on lead guitar. Rounding out the troupe is Little Johnny Walter on rhythm guitar, Joe Bencomo on drums and Stick Davis on bass. Victor Wainwright is featured on piano and does a real nice job and Charles really makes his harp sing. Nice opener. On Tell Your Daddy, the band sets a funky dance groove with a boogaloo bass line. Breaking into a smooth shuffle Royal plays it like a stud and the deal is on. Breaking back, Charles brings his harp to the forefront with great tone. Shoot My Rooster has a real nice blues lope with Charles' harp on call and Royal's guitar on response. One of my favorite tracks on the release, this track features super piano work by Wainwright in the mix with Royal and Charles. Excellent. Sonny Boy Williamson's Your Funeral, My Trial really gets the feel of old Chicago blues with Charles working his harp. Royal's Texas blues guitar styling is tight and forceful giving the track great balance. Nobody But You has a bit of 50's R&B blues styling and Royal's guitar work is clean and distinctive. Charles' harp work is fat and rich with tight underpinnings by Wainwright, Davis and Bencomo. On Heavy Built Woman Royal takes a real nice walk on his six string with Funderburgh like runs and Charles' vocals and super harp are nicely backed by Latonya Oliver and Dana Merriwether. Blues classic, Baby Please Don't Go is up next and with great enthusiasm Charles shouts out the lyrics. This track has great instrumental qualities with solid entries by Charles and Royal. Check it out! Rich Man Blues has a real deep lope and strong Chicago blues styling. Royal and Charles take nice solo passes and Wainwright's contributions are essential. Wrapping the release is Help Me Just This Time, a modified boogie. Texas, where you are never too far from a bayou and some good rockin' music. This 15th compilation in the "By The Bayou" series takes us back to the R&B sounds you would have heard belting out of a Louisiana juke joint on a steamy night in the 1950s or early 1960s. All of the tracks included were recorded in that party state, although some of the artists were based inTexas, crossing the state line to make music in studios based inCrowleyandLake Charles. Amongst the rarities unveiled are three tracks cut in New Orleans but released by Flip Records of Hollywood, a label primarily known for doo wop. We also have some classic Classie Ballou, Chris Kenner's first record, a few complete unknowns, a bunch of alternate takes and, most excitingly, two previously undocumented Barbara Lynn tracks, her first recordings. I unearthed the Barbara Lynn titles in the Goldband stash here at Ace and asked her about them. A couple of years before her discovery by Joe Barry, which led to her recording sessions with Huey Meaux and global fame, she was nearing the end of her high school education and sneaking off to play in clubs in her hometown of Beaumont, Texas. Her natural talent singing and playing the blues was noticed by Goldband artist and DJ Clarence Garlow, who mentored her and was sufficiently impressed to fix up a session with Eddie Shuler, where she cut the two numbers. Perhaps because she covered two hits of the day, Shuler didn't pick up on her talent. Barbara had completely forgotten about the session, which is why nothing has been reported previously. Amongst the better-known songs are four formidable rockers: 'Wild Cherry' by Leroy Washington, 'Roll Roll Roll' by Guitar Jr, 'Shoo, Shoo Chicken' by Charles Sheffield and an alternate take of 'Oh Babe' by Lester Robertson. Yep, it's time to transport yourself back over 50 years to a juke joint on a humid Louisian anight. This record sees 15 artists covering Chris Smither songs, most take Smither's own laid-back semi-acoustic approach to the songs but others go a different route - Tim O'Brien turns "Origins of the species" into a New Orleans jazz workout and Paul Cebar and his band give "No love today" a more modern New Orleans R&B makeover, Aoife O'Donavon and Stephanie Coleman completely reimagine "Small revelations" as a Celtic ballad, while long-time Smither friend Peter Mulvey makes "Time to spend" into a Western Swing two-step! Mary Gauthier sounds like Lucinda Williams on her version of "I feel the same" and I loved Mark Erelli and Jeffery Foucault's harmonising on "Song for Susan", while Dave Alvin turns in an electric version of the title track with nice slide guitar, more nice guitar from Jorma Kaukonen on "Leave the light on". I particularly liked Eileen Jewell's version of "Can't shake these blues" and also Patty Larkin's "Train home" - surprisingly both artists turn in brooding, bluesy versions much darker than Chris's originals. There isn't a bad track here, everyone manages to evoke the spirit of Mr. Smither while putting their own personal spin on the songs - which for me is exactly what successful tribute records should be doing.
