Walls 13. With You The folk tunes on Amos Lee's sixth album are steeped in the sanctified sounds of classic soul and gospel. Recorded in a converted East Nashville church, his patiently crafted songs become resplendent with the addition of buttery organs and horn arrangements. He may look like a humble folksinger, but that pliant falsetto has the power to melt away all fears and frustrations. With his laid-back vocal delivery and earthy, acoustic songwriting, Amos Lee draws inspiration from soul music, contemporary jazz, and '70s folk artists like James Taylor. The Philadelphia native first became serious about performing while attending the University of South Carolina during the mid-'90s. After graduating with a degree in English, he taught elementary school before deciding to pursue a music career full-time. A period of waiting tables and bartending followed as Lee honed his songwriting skills. He eventually landed some high-profile gigs as an opening act, including an extended tour with pianist/vocalist Norah Jones, whose bassist, Lee Alexander, agreed to produce Lee's first album. With Alexander's help, Lee released the eponymously titled Amos Lee on Blue Note in 2005. The album reached number two on the U.S. Billboard Top Heatseekers and several of the tracks, "Colors," "Keep It Loose, Keep It Tight," and "Arms of a Woman" were used in various television shows and movies. Having won a small following for his blend of acoustic funk, folk, and light jazz, Lee returned one year later with his sophomore effort, Supply and Demand, featuring the single "Shout Out Loud." Produced by former Wallflowers and Natalie Merchant bassist Barrie Maguire, the album entered the Top 100 of the Billboard 200 chart and further cemented Lee's reputation as a heartfelt, rootsy songwriter. The Don Was-produced Last Days at the Lodge followed in 2008 and found Lee backed by a highly regarded cadre of journeyman musicians including guitarist Doyle Bramhall, Jr., keyboardist Spooner Oldham, bassist Pino Palladino, and drummer James Gadson. The album cracked the Top 40 upon its release and became Lee's highest-charting album to date. Buoyed by his success and a growing fan base, Lee was able to gather an all-star group of collaborators to appear on his next record, including Willie Nelson, Iron & Wine's Sam Beam, Calexico, and Lucinda Williams. The result, Mission Bell, was recorded in 2010 with Calexico's Joey Burns producing, and released early the following year. Anchored by the single "Windows Rolled Down," the album reached number one on both the Billboard 200 and Top Rock Albums charts. The EP As the Crow Flies, featuring previously unreleased songs recorded during the Mission Bell sessions, appeared in 2012. Lee returned in 2013 with Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song, which was recorded in Nashville with producer Jay Joyce (the Wallflowers, Miranda Lambert, Eric Church) and included appearances from vocalists Alison Krauss and Patty Griffin. It also performed well, reaching number 16 on the Billboard 200. The concert album Live at Red Rocks followed in 2015 and showcased Lee performing with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra at the famed outdoor amphitheater. In 2016, Lee returned with his sixth full-length album, and first for John Varvatos Records/Republic Records, Spirit. Produced by Lee, the album found him combining his love of contemporary R&B and pop with his longstanding knack for earnest, folk-inflected melodicism. Dancing Gravy Part One (6:30) Sydney, Australia-based indie dance trio Holy Balm made a decent impact with their 2012 full-length debut, It's You, which arrived stateside via tastemaking Los Angeles label Not Not Fun. While that album was a fun blend of house beats and D.I.Y. sensibilities, the group's impressive sophomore album, Activity, is a considerable leap forward. Holy Balm haven't drastically altered their sound here, nor do they sound significantly more polished, but they sound far more confident and focused than ever before. The songs are catchier and the electronic instrumentation retains its live, spontaneous sound without sounding as sloppy as they occasionally did in the past; they've noticeably tightened up as musicians. All of the album's songs exceed five minutes each, but they never feel as if they're meandering. Most of these songs are poppy enough to be shortened to three or four minutes, and would sound absolutely killer on the radio or a 7", but their lengths are more reflective of the dance party that is their live show. From the outset, Holy Balm immediately sound rejuvenated, with the bouncy rhythm and Italo-disco synths of "Fashion" making a bigger impact than much of their earlier material. The song ends with playfully squirmy synths and tasteful, minimalist saxophones. On a couple of other songs, effects make the vocals seem altered (with "Hot Cold" sounding particularly trippy and smudgy), but the group seems to introduce the hooks at the beginning of the songs before branching off into more experimental waters toward the end. In a few moments, particularly "Aces," the group lets a hint of darkness in, reminiscent of the more paranoid side of Chicago house (i.e. Adonis' "No Way Back"). "Circumstance" finds Holy Balm at their most forceful, demanding "be nice to me" over an insistent, pounding beat. Closing track "Dancing Gravy II" is a bit slower and more atmospheric than its predecessors, living up to its lyric "going deeper than before." The album was certified gold by the RIAA on June 3, 2003, and has sold 677,000 copies in the U.S. AllMusic Review by John Bush: Though she didn't come out of the R&B tradition, Heather Headley has plenty of soul on her debut, This Is Who I Am. Headley, a singer whose vocal strength isn't mere compensation for a lack of interpretive skills or lame songwriting, possesses a range that's surprising and welcome; she slips on dramatic personas continually here, quite ironic considering the title. The arrangements aren't exactly hooky, but the cast of producers - including Dallas Austin, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and D'Influence, use everything in their power - from a Hammond B-3 to synthesizers - to flesh out these songs. Occasionally, the songs don't reflect their age very well, as on the regrets of a stay-at-home girlfriend ("I Wish I Wasn't") or an increasingly angry housewife who's been neglected ("Like Ya Used To"). The opener, "He Is" (by songwriter/producer Joshua Nile), is very good though - an intriguing angle on female thoughts about the male side of love (or, just possibly, a look at the aspects of God). Headley sounds excellent throughout, her voice pure as crystal on the ballads, occasionally outr?? in similar fashion to Mariah Carey, but gritty and soulful when she's sorting out the responsibilities of a relationship in "Fulltime." Headley by and large proceeds with an "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" policy. She does sound more assured, which only works to her advantage with the mostly elegant and very musical set of arrangements that she fronts. Though the hooks aren't as immediate as what can be heard on Top 40 radio, the relationship insights and the manner in which they're compellingly conveyed are more than a fair trade-off. The title track, which begins the album, immediately reminds the listener that Headley's songs aren't full of empty gestures or fleeting thrills. Unlike most modern R&B singles of any stripe - whether they strive for major chart success or comparisons to '70s icons - the song exemplifies how relationships and emotions are messy and complicated, and how they can't always be summed up by short catch phrases, over-dramatic bellowing, and other forms of "I'm more important than the song" nonsense. That said, the album isn't without some surprises. "Back When It Was" is the classiest production Lil Jon has done yet, much more "Givin' Him Something He Can Feel" than "Get Low" - classy enough, in fact, to lead into another one of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis' elegantly layered ballads. The buoyant dancehall-tinged track "How Many Ways," produced by Lenky, features Vybz Kartel, and is just as sexy as Beyonc??'s "Naughty Girl" without being nearly as suggestive. The only disappointment is that the album lacks a strutting, upfront track on the level of This Is Who I Am's Dallas Austin-produced "Like Ya Used To." While Norbert Emminger lived in Nuremberg, J??rgen Hahn moved to famous Berlin - both indulged with endless pleasure in their musical activities. But for recruiting from workaday life they went together on holiday every year - if you like to the common roots in the park for hiking. And so the idea of the reintegration of their good old quintet was born: a REUNION had to be created. Perfect companions set off for completing the band: Bernhard Pichl, Rudi Engel and Florian Kettler. Also broadsheet and pen were in luggage at their vacations and so J??rgen Hahn´s composition short walk is an audible reminder on a walk which took 20 minutes in the region of the Rhoen Mountains. As well Norbert Emminger´s Kreuzberg means a certain mountain in this region of Germany. At this place the two old friends stayed in a cloister while their trip. You notice that both really are an authentic, creative and humorous travel party. And that´s the reason why jazz can even make fun beyond all discussions about traditional or modern, innovative or conservative. The style is the essence from all of their influences: New Orleans, Jazz, Latin and Soul.
