With trumpeter Jonah Jones and occasional drummer Cozy Cole the stars of the supporting cast, this was one of the top swing combos of the era. Smith's hard-swinging violin, his enthusiastic vocals, and his interplay with Jones made this a particularly hot unit. In addition to the hit "I'se A-Muggin'," highlights of the disc include "I Hope Gabriel Likes My Music," "After You've Gone," "You'se a Viper," "Old Joe's Hittin' the Jug," "Twilight in Turkey," and the classic "Here Comes the Man With the Jive." Why (Bonus Track) Playing sideman to Rick Braun, Larry Carlton, Gato Barbieri, the Neville Brothers, and many others introduced guitarist/vocalist Steve Oliver to smooth jazz fans, but it was with Steve Reid's band that Oliver found a following. It was 1996 when Reid contacted Oliver at the last minute to fill in for a canceled opening act. Oliver hit the stage as a solo act and Reid was impressed with the guitarist's vocalese skills and summery sound (Oliver is a California native and a true follower of the laid-back lifestyle). Oliver had come to vocalese not through King Pleasure or Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, but through Bobby McFerrin and Pat Metheny's work with Richard Bona and David Blamires, who sang along with guitar solos. Being a fan of the earthy Metheny sound, Reid hired Oliver after the gig and featured him in his touring band. Reid's Mysteries and Passion in Paradise albums featured Oliver not only as guitarist but songwriter as well. Oliver struck out on his own in 1999 with his debut, First View, released by Night Vision. The album spawned three hit singles on smooth jazz radio and earned the guitarist a Debut Artist of the Year award from Smooth Jazz News. Duties in Reid's band kept Oliver busy until 2002, when he released Positive Energy on Native Language. Paslms 100 - 2:46 After a lengthy gap between records with his Fellowship Band, drummer Brian Blade has stepped up the pace, following up the unmistakable sound of Season of Changes (Verve, 2008) with Mama Rosa. Blade temporarily deserts the folkloric jazz context of his longstanding group, instead delivering a singer/songwriter album that's just as compelling. Different in nature it may be, but in its own way it makes perfect sense for the introspective and deeply spiritual Blade. Blade's always had a penchant for song, even when working in longer form for Fellowship. He closed Perceptual (Blue Note, 2000) with the gentle "Trembling," his debut as a singer and invited Joni Mitchell to sing on the more dramatic "Steadfast." Both tracks drew a clear line from Blade's more expansive, jazz-centric writing and a penchant for simple melody and articulating his feelings with words as well as music. Blade has grown considerably as a singer/songwriter since then, though the spirit of Mitchell with whom Blade toured and recorded looms large, especially on the opening title track, where his open-tuned guitar alludes to Mitchell's own open harmonies. Blade's subject material is far more religious in nature, however, though his faith is personal and far from proselytizing. Daniel Lanois the well-known producer and singer/songwriter plays a supporting instrumental role throughout half of Mama Rosa; his tremolo'd electric guitar a soothing, defining texture on the slightly more up-tempo "Mercy Angel," where he also delivers a moving, lyrical solo. "At the Centerline" incorporates the enduring "Serenity Prayer" ("God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.") before Blade expands on its elegantly simple philosophy with a more complex song that, structurally, provides a strong link between the music of Mama Rosa and that of the Fellowship Band, as does the equally detailed yet smoothly flowing "Faithful Brother." Blade's unassuming and unaffected voice, with its subtle vibrato, brings passionate understatement to lyrics that deal with matters both corporeal and less grounded, always remaining truthful and honest to the core. With guests including Fellowship's Jon Cowherd (keyboards), Chris Thomas (bass), and Kurt Rosenwinkel (guitar), there's enough harmonic sophistication, even on the relatively straightforward "Get There," to contextualize Blade's the singer/songwriter with Blade the jazz composer and improvising player. It's all part of one continuum, with Mama Rosa simply occupying a different place than Season of Changes or Perceptual. After 11 calming, tender songs, Blade ends the album with two brief soundscapes, in collaboration with Adam Samuels and Tucker Martine. In 1988 Atkinson was born into a digital, cyber world which held no interest for a person who is a throwback to another age. His obsession with the blues took hold while still a youngster and led him on a quest to play with the modern masters. However, it was the old timers lining up to play with him. Kim Wilson, who immediately took Jon under his wing and into his Blues All-Stars, put it this way, "Jon is one of the only guys doing it the right way. He knows the music. He knows the gist of it and understands the soul of the music." Soon Jon would join that elite fraternity known as Bob Corritore's Rhythm Room All-Stars. Thirty five years ago Corritore, a Chicago blues man, relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, and brought with him the blues from the windy city. He not only opened the Rhythm Room, an oasis of cool in the hot Sonoran desert, but a recording studio as well. It is where he has made a series of award winning albums which feature Bob's muscular blues harp in support of this generation's blues masters as well as the greats who are as old to him as as he is to Big Jon Atkinson. Last year Corritore went to Jon's studio in San Diego. Bob said of Big Jon, "Jon's approach to the blues extends right into his recording studio. He records on vintage equipment just like it was recorded back in the old days. What you end up with is an honest performance with that natural saturation and warmth that makes for a beautiful sounding record." He went on to say, "This is an example of the beauty and natural camaraderie that the blues inspires. I've been doing this a long time and here I am learning from a man who is half my age." As far as Bob's harp playing is concerned, Jon said, "Bob's playing on this record is the best of his career." Joining Jon and Bob is yet a third generation of musicians who make special guest appearances on House Party at Big Jon's. They are vocalists Dave Riley, Alabama Mike, Willie Buck and Tomcat Courtney. They, along with Big Jon, put their own vocal spin and inject their unique personalities into a wonderful sixteen song mix of originals and some interesting covers. As Corritore points out, "There is, in some cases, a fifty to sixty year age differential between many of the musicians on this record. This speaks directly to the beautiful spirit of the blues that transcends the generations." Everywhere you go there are people who LOVE the blues and are quick to mention how passionate they are for this brand of music. It is generally understood that they just don't make records like they used to and it is hard to find authentic sounding blues these days. Delta Groove Music has the answer. It is House Party at Big Jon's. It is what blues fans have been waiting for. It is an old school, modern masterpiece that will sit side by side with all of those "desert island discs" that are so universally cherished. House Party at Big Jon's is an indispensible addition to any blues library. Allegro 5:03 Performers: Sabine Bauer - harpsichord La Stagione Frankfurt Michael Schneider - direction Georg Anton Benda is one of those composers who had some amount of fame in his time, but is underrepresented in modern times both in publication and recording of his music. Although he was more widely known for his stage works, some degree of his reputation was built on his harpsichord concertos. The four on this recording by Sabine Bauer and La Stagione Frankfurt show very clearly characteristics of that period in the middle of the eighteenth century when the Baroque was waning and the Classical-era was waxing. The facts that they were specifically for harpsichord and that the harpsichord is also a member of the orchestra are the most obvious Baroque elements. Benda wrote nearly all of the movements in a ritornello form, with the orchestra and soloist trading off as they do in Vivaldi's concertos. What marks these works as belonging to a later period, however, are the changing moods in each movement. The F minor Concerto sounds as if a Vivaldi concerto were being played with Haydn's Sturm und Drang upheaval. The fast movements of the B minor are also full of tension. The F major and G major concertos are less dramatic, and the finale of the G major is even playful, but the harpsichord part in both concertos is still florid and flashy. Bauer handles the incredibly brisk tempos of conductor Michael Schneider with the greatest of ease, along with all the fancy ornamentation and even hand crossing. She also gives a sympathetic dignity to the slow movements. The orchestra plays much more of a supporting role in those movements, but Schneider and La Stagione are still precise, just as they are vigorous in the fast movements. The recording's sound is very good, not artificially boosting the harpsichord's sound to equal that of the full orchestra or rise above it. He is even more heightened in this setting with the I Solisti Dell'orchestra Della Toscana, a large string ensemble, pianist Stefano Bollani, harpist Cinzia Conte, and a pair of percussionists. Galliano or his hero Astor Piazzolla wrote this richly romantic music, based in classical, chamber, and tango traditions. The middle of the CD features four of Galliano's shorter pieces. "San Peyre" features typical lush, skyline vistas, Galliano's wistful musings, and "Flower Is a Lovesome Thing" flavorings. The quick waltz "La Valse a Margaux" sports some incredible unison lines between accordion and strings. Bollani's lilting piano adds to the hymnal classicism of a gondolier's regret on "Melodicelli," while the piano-led, dark tango "Habanerando" (with harp) is nothing short of majestic. Galliano wrote the three-part suite "Opale Concerto," the allegro movement an urgent 5/4 and 6/8 motif mixing with active, scattered strings; "Deuxieme" is a sober, swelling, throbbing slowed waltz; and "Troiseme" is back to a more energized 4/4 like a fast freeway jaunt, then settled and pining, and again anxious. Piazzolla's suite "Concerto pour Bandoneon" starts with a "Premier" movement that is aggressive, pulse-pounding, and deliberate; another "Deuxieme" with Galliano's bandoneon, harp, and lead violin pulls heartstrings in tip-toe, cat-like delicate, but firmly wrought phrases; and "Trosieme," in presto mode, is loaded with passionate bursts. Also included is Piazzolla's famous number "Oblivion" with more lush romanticism and traipsing strings backing Galliano's heartbroken accordion. This recording is filled to the brim with the compact emotionalism one expects from French or Argentenian style of impressionistic music.
