Smack Dab In The Middle (3:15) 'We've Got A World That Swings' is a brand new album collaboration between the UK's premier jazz singer, CLAIRE MARTIN and saxophonist/vocalist/bandleader RAY GELATO and over 13 tracks, the pair pay an unashamed homage to the beauty of swing. Claire and Ray first worked together 20 years ago, but more recently they went on the road together presenting a live show that wowed packed houses with their interpretations of some of the best tunes from The Great American Songbook. The logical end to the tour was to record a complementary album... and the set, 'We've Got A World That Swings', hits the sales racks on May 20th. On the album the duo are backed by an all-star trio - David Newton (piano), Dave Whitford (bass) and Sebastian de Krom (drums) and between them and Ray and Claire they find freshness and vitality in familiar material - songs like 'Come Dance With Me', 'The Coffee Song', 'Something's Gotta Give' and Charlie Parker's 'Ornithology'. The songs here range in date from 1968's "Soy Loco Por Ti, America" (actually a Gilberto Gil composition) all the way up to 2000 with a recording of Jorge Ben's "Zumbi." Between the two ends are a number of Veloso originals. The full course of the tropicalia movement can be traced along the course of the album, with nods to samba, reggae, modern singer/songwriter works, and a few localized Bahia styles. Works with odd sound effects show off influences from art music, only to return again to songs based on samba vocals. There is both the dramatic and the gentle here, the progressive and the nostalgic. With the long line of musical innovation Veloso traveled during the course of his career up to the present, there's a lot of ground to cover for a novice listener. Attempting to cover all of the major bases in a single album is a godsend for such a listener. This album provides a nice listening experience in itself, as well as an outstanding jumping point for further exploration into the tropicalia movement. But Not For Me [4:21] This big-band date by Bob Mintzer from the early '90s utilizes some of the Big Apple's top available musicians of the era, including trumpeters Marvin Stamm and Randy Brecker, saxophonists Scott Robinson and Roger Rosenberg (both of whom double on clarinet), and pianist Phil Markowitz. Mintzer has moved freely between contemporary and mainstream jazz depending on the record date and personnel, but on this DMP release he incorporates a bit from each style. At times that's a problem, because straight-ahead fans will find the smooth jazz-like rhythm section in the standard "Without a Song" rather lame compared to the writing for the brass and reeds. Fortunately, when electric bassist Lincoln Goines is replaced by acoustic bassist Michael Formanek, as in "Christopher Columbus" (where Robinson swings like mad on tenor) and Mintzer's inventive chart of "Easy Living," all is well. Two years later, she went to New York, where she was signed by Ted Lewis, and spent the next few years touring East Coast theaters in Lewis' variety show, appearing with Ben Blue, Sophie Tucker and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. Returning to San Francisco, Yankee played numerous club dates before signing with Ray and Bea Goman in their North Beach review at Goman's "Gay '90s" nightclub for five years. She then formed her own singing act and toured major clubs around the country. In 1958 she joined the Turk Murphy band in San Francisco, and sang with him at the famed Earthquake McGoon's for five years before forming another band, Pat Yankee and the Sinners, touring the Las Vegas/Tahoe/Reno circuit. From 1972- 1981, she lived in Madrid, Spain, performed at the Whiskey Jazz Hotel, Dallas Club and Cova de Drogue, and was called the white queen of jazz by the Spanish press. Returning to San Francisco, Pat once again sang with Turk Murphy at both Earthquake McGoon's and at the Fairmont Hotel until Murphy's death in 1987. Yankee has performed To Bessie, With Love for the past five years at numerous jazz festivals around the country, in addition to performing at events overseas -- the Cork Jazz Festival in Ireland and jazz venues in Germany, Sweden and Australia, appearing with artists such as Dave Brubeck, Nina Simone, Carmen McRae and Gerry Mulligan. She was named Empress of the Jubilee at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee in May 1999. She has made several recordings for RCA, Roulette and others. She has five recent CDs, her latest being Yankee Salutes Armstrong on the GHB label. She has been listed in Leonard Feather's Encyclopedia of Jazz since 1958. To Bessie, With Love was broadcast in December 1997 on KGO-TV (ABC).
