Enchantment (Firm Roots) Denise Donatelli got a late start in her career as a jazz singer, as she first devoted herself to her work at CNN while raising her family. For her third CD, the talented alto again utilizes the talents of keyboardist/arranger Geoff Keezer with guitarist Peter Sprague, bassist Hamilton Price, and drummer Jon Wikan rounding out the rhythm section, with a few guests on some tracks. She expands her musical horizon a bit more on this release, though there are still plenty of standards. Donatelli swings hard with her rousing interpretation of "It's You or No One." She shimmers in her romantic duet with Keezer on "Why Did I Choose You?". Ron Blake is added on tenor sax for the vocalist's enchanting rendition of Benny Carter's timeless "When Lights Are Low." She's equally comfortable with Cedar Walton's demanding "Enchantment (Firm Roots)." Donatelli ventures into Brazilian music, including a touching, lush rendition of an Ivan Lins/Vitor Martins bossa nova (with English lyrics by Alan & Marilyn Bergman), backed by strings and with superb solos by soprano saxophonist Ron Blake and Keezer. She also offers a playful, breezy take of "The Telephone Song" with Sprague (on acoustic guitar) and Wikan (on pandeito) as her sole accompanists. There are a few twists. Donatelli performs Sting's "Big Lie, Small World" as an infectious bossa nova with a bit of Afro-Cuban seasoning thrown in by Keezer, the backing vocals of the husband-and-wife team of Kerry Marsh and Julia Dollison, plus bass clarinet and cello. The backing is similar for her warm interpretation of the obscure pop ballad "The Bed I Made." Denise Donatelli continues to make impressive strides after her delayed entrance into jazz. "I have long been uneasy with the sound of the mastered version of The Great Annihilator (and it's companion, contemporaneous solo album, Drainland, included here in this new release). For whatever reason things drifted out of hand at the time, and there was never enough time or money to untangle the sonic knots created by the original unsatisfactory mastering that took place until now. It was with the utmost alacrity that I received the news recently from my friend Bill Rieflin that he had discovered the original (after much digging), unmastered mixes for both albums in his archives. We were able to proceed now with lovingly mastering both Great Annihilator and Drainland from these virgin sources, with our right hand mastering man Doug Henderson in Berlin, Germany. I have to say I'm rather pleased with the result. It's one of those instances where it's like hearing the thing for the first time again. It's an effortless listen from a group with an incredibly pure sound. With their new album The Third Day, Edinburgh's North Atlantic Oscillation have created a flow of energy deserving of their meteorological namesake. At a time when music is increasingly cut down into single segments for easy digestion, the record - the first they've produced entirely themselves - is woven together as a whole, beautiful body of work, the tracks entwined around each other with no dead space in between. According to vocalist, guitarist and keyboard player Sam Healy, it's an approach that's been building since his childhood introduction to the work of The Beatles. "I think the perfect example of this is Abbey Road, the second side of that," he says. "The legend is that John Lennon was tired and emotional at that point, and tended to spend a lot of time in darkened rooms. So Paul was the one who did the little segues between tracks on side two. The way that those tracks interweave is absolutely fantastic. Even as a kid I remember thinking 'that's really clever, that's a really interesting way to take advantage of your skills as an album writer rather than just a songwriter." The band, completed by Ben Martin (drums, programming) and Chris Howard (bass), formed in 2005, and quickly became known for their intricate, progressive take on rock and electronica, their 2010 debut Grappling Hooks and follow-up Fog Electric gaining them critical praise and plenty of fans with a taste for delicately intelligent music. And while The Third Day is not a concept album like its predecessor, that continuous flow is something Healy intended. He compares it to a shortwave radio sweeping from one station to the next. Though the guitars and vocals were recorded by Healy at home - where he confesses to agonising over the minutiae of the sounds ("If you're doing stuff at home you're not stressing out other people in the studio, they don't have to hear your screams and howls and tears," he says, wryly) - other parts were created in the Irish countryside, at long-time collaborator Peter Meighan's studio. But it was the setting for the drums that was to be the most dramatic. They were recorded in a Victorian mill in Newcastle, up in the rafters while a gale howled through the building. I've grown weary of what I'm perceiving as a growing "more, louder, more, louder" approach to music, and Erez and collaborator Ori Rousso pile sounds on top of sounds without the final product ever sounding cluttered or muddled, the mark of really talented production. Meanwhile, the dark, brutal "Toys," which yields suspense and gunshots to drop you right in a contemporary horror show, and the shattering closer "Junior," which builds up to a swirl ringing chaos and reverberating echoes, reveals Erez's razor-sharp instinct for orchestrating an entire scene: wielding a beat, an effect, a vocal manipulation in order to construct a clear mood and atmosphere. Her lyrics, as Erez told Jezebel, are typically improvised on the spot after every other element of the song has been built, and they indeed possess the power of immediacy and urgency. On tracks like "Off the Radar" and "Hit U," this results in mantras of sorts-"hear me no one sees me no one, I'm off the radar"-that can serve as repetitive vocal talismans. On "Pity," the stream of consciousness style borders on therapeutic free association, with words sharing sonic similarity and thematic significance to produce something dizzying and gutting: "Smart, sharp, witty/But oh so weary/skinny, skinny, skinny, skinny/skinny cat in a dog's land." Erez has delivered a record filled with hits that remains at all times vital. Poco allegro Renaud Capu?§on has enjoyed a meteoric rise, going from concertmaster in a youth orchestra in the latter 1990s to major artist status by the early 2000s, with all the perks associated with such high rank, including a prestigious recording contract and regular appearances at the world's leading concert venues. Capu?§on's brother is cellist Gautier Capu?§on, also a front-rank artist who often appears with Renaud on both the concert stage and recordings. Among their more acclaimed collaborations is the 2007 Virgin Classics recording of Brahms' Double Concerto. While Renaud is at home in French fare (Franck, Ravel, Dutilleux, etc.), his repertory is quite broad, taking in a substantial chunk from the German sphere, from Beethoven and Schubert to Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Brahms. But he also performs works by Kod??ly, Halvorsen, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Schulhoff, and of contemporary vintage, the 2002 Sonata for violin and cello by Eric Tanguy. Capu?§on has recorded mostly for Virgin Classics, but has also appeared on DG, Decca, EMI, and TDK. Renaud Capu?§on was born in Chamb??ry, France, in 1976. From the age of 14 he studied at the Paris Conservatory, where his most important teachers were G??rard Poulet and Veda Reynolds. He won first prize there in chamber music performance in 1992, and three years later won the Prize of the Berlin Academy of the Arts. Capu?§on then had further studies with Thomas Brandis in Berlin, and would soon take lessons from the most renowned of his teachers, the late Isaac Stern. It is Stern's 1737 Guarneri del Ges?? violin that Capu?§on uses in performance. Capu?§on accepted an offer in 1997 from conductor Claudio Abbado to serve as concertmaster of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, a post he would hold for three summers (1998-2000). In 1999 Capu?§on began recording exclusively for Virgin Classics and has since amassed a discography of more than 20 CDs and DVDs, some as a secondary player in works recorded for other labels. In the new century Capu?§on has made numerous distinguished debuts with leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, under Haitink (2002), and the Boston Symphony, under Dohn??nyi (2004). He has appeared in concert across Europe, Asia, and North America and has also made regular appearances at major festivals, such as the London Mostly Mozart, Lucerne, Aix-en-Provence, and Tanglewood.
