It Only Takes a Little 12. Ain't No One Winning "The Greatest Escape", 12 new songs produced by Matt Ellis and mixed by Craig Schumacher is out Tuesday October 21st. Matt Ellis' new, fifth album, recorded and mixed at Wavelab in Tucson, AZ, has a new, tougher sound that recalls the Australian Singer/Songwriters early rock roots. Based in California since 2005, Ellis' sound has evolved effortlessly over the past decade blending Country, Rock and Folk in the tradition of Tom Petty, Neil Young and Ryan Adams. Last December, Ellis and his band headed to Tucson, AZ and recorded 13 tracks over 4 days. Produced by Matt, the live tracks were engineered by Chris Schultz and Craig Schumacher (Neko Case, Calexico, The Jayhawks). Ellis returned home to Los Angeles, CA to complete recording, teaming up with Nick Luca (Calexico, Iron & Wine). The pair spent the following months, setting up in multiple home studios adding Vocals, Fender Rhodes, Piano and additional Guitars, before Matt returned to Tucson to mix the album with Schumacher, the celebrated engineer behind his last two releases. The result is a loose classic rock feel, steeped in Americana and Folk. Ellis' trademark voice is in fine form and the songs have an extra level of detail, but the long list of guest musicians is gone. The band Matt put together to promote his last full length, "Births, Deaths & Marriages" (2010), is still with him, and he was inspired to build this album around them. Throughout 2013, Matt was presenting unfinished songs to Josh Norton (Guitar), Fern Sanchez (Drums), Grant Fitzpatrick (Bass), Tim Walker (Pedal Steel) and his wife Vavine (Vocals). The group would jam on songs over multiple sessions, letting arrangements and feel develop naturally, the same approach the band took to the recording sessions. A double A-Side single, "On The Horizon/Thank You Los Angeles" was released in late August. Since the release, the band has been promoting the new songs with a launch at The Del Monte speakeasy, a slot on the Abbot Kinney Fest and The Desert Stars Festival at Pappy & Harriets. Matt Ellis is launching the new album on Wednesday October 22nd at Harvard & Stone, in Los Angeles California. Merci Mathieu Boogaerts is an acclaimed French alternative singer/songwriter whose eclectic style draws from Afro-pop and reggae as well as indie electronica and folk music. Born in 1970 in Fontenay-sous-Bois, ?Žle-de-France, France, he made his commercial recording debut in 1995 with the four-track maxi-single Ondul?? Sp??cial on Remark Records, followed shortly thereafter by his accompanying full-length album debut, Super (1996). After switching to the label Disc'AZ, Boogaerts again released a maxi-single, the five-track Version Simple (Et Version Compliqu??e) (1998), in advance of his full-length effort, J'en Ai Marre d'?Štre Deux (1998). Featuring a memorably folky Michael Jackson medley, "Beat It/Billie Jean," J'en Ai Marre d'?Štre Deux was a commercial breakthrough for the alternative singer/songwriter, reaching number 67 on the French albums chart. In the wake of this breakthrough success, Boogaerts released a live album, Mathieu Boogaerts en Public (2000), and advanced to another label, the prestigious Warner Music France subsidiary T?´t ou Tard, on which he released the album 2000 (2002). Reaching number 25 on the French albums chart, 2000 marked the growing popularity of Boogaerts, and a November 2002 concert performance at Le Lavoir Moderne Parisien in Paris was filmed and later released on DVD as 2000 en Concert "Solo" (2003) in order to accommodate his expanding fan base. While the successive albums Michel (2005) and I Love You (2008) were less successful commercially, neither breaking into the Top 50 of the French albums chart, they found Boogaerts moving in new directions creatively and were generally well received among critics as well as fans. But on this special project, he is heard as a talented tenor-saxophonist who draws on the sounds and styles of Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins, finding his own voice somewhere in between. Glenn sounds quite at home playing with the vintage rhythm sections yet gives the music his own twist and never tries to just merely copy or recreate the past. Relatively few jazz musicians have been equally comfortable on both brass and reed instruments. Benny Carter, Ira Sullivan and Scott Robinson come to mind along with just a handful of others. Glenn was never told that it was difficult to play both brass and reeds, so he developed his own musical conceptions, giving one the impression that it is effortless. But that is consistent with his career for he has often made the difficult seem natural. Although he has loved playing tenor since he picked up his first saxophone when he was 13, Glenn Zottola had never recorded a full set on that instrument. Making this CD even more unique is that Glenn is heard playing along with some of the earliest performances recorded for the acclaimed Classic Jazz series. Dating from 1952, the rhythm sections feature such notables as pianists Nat Pierce and Don Abney, and guitarists Mundell Lowe and Jimmy Raney taking short solos while bassist Milt Hinton, Oscar Pettiford and Wilbur Ware, and drummers Osie Johnson, Kenny Clarke and Bobby Donaldson give quiet and steady support. Because Glenn has a timeless and very flexible style, he adapts his playing on this unique set, sounding a bit like a cousin of Lester Young and Stan Getz. His style, hinting at swing, bop and cool jazz, fits the era perfectly. Performing 10 standards including "Too Marvelous For Words," "Body And Soul," "Three Little Words" and "Fine And Dandy," Glenn Zottola plays creatively within the style of 1952 cool swing without sacrificing his own individuality. If given a blindfold test, few listeners would guess that Glenn's playing took place nearly 60 years after that of the rhythm sections and some might speculate that this was a long lost session recorded at the Lighthouse. Smile Prior to winning the Thelonious Monk Institute's International Jazz Competition in 2014, trumpeter Marquis Hill was already a formidable presence on the Chicago jazz scene. An adroit improviser and educator, Hill had taken home several accolades, including his first place win in the 2013 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition. His Monk Institute performance merely cemented the notion that Hill was a jazz artist who'd arrived. As part of his prize for winning the Monk contest, he earned a record deal with the Concord label, and 2016's The Way We Play is the result. While the album is certainly a showcase for Hill's fluid talents as an improvisor, it also works to showcase his skills as a bandleader. As with his 2014 effort, Modern Flows EP, Vol. 1, The Way We Play finds Hill leading his Blacktet, a group of longtime collaborators including saxophonist Christopher McBride, vibraphonist Justin Thomas, drummer Makaya McCraven, and bassist Joshua Ramos. Thoughtfully organic and rife with a groove-oriented, hip-hop-informed style, the Blacktet is at once contemporary and steeped in modern jazz tradition. Essentially, Hill balances both of these strengths on The Way We Play, largely touching upon songs from the jazz canon re-arranged in his own fluid, soulfully articulated style. As if to playfully underline his Chicago spirit, Hill also re-creates the Chicago Bulls game-opening theme replete with vocalist Meagan McNeal introducing his band. He then moves through a set of well-curated covers including a sophisticated version of "My Foolish Heart," featuring vocalist Christie Dashiell and a kinetic take on Horace Silver's "Moon Rays," in which McCraven plays a frenzied drum style reminiscent of electronic drum and bass beats. Hill is a dynamic performer whose trumpet can be hushed and breathy one minute, and boldly clarion the next. Aesthetically, while he fits into the Freddie Hubbard mold with flashes of Wynton Marsalis and Clifford Brown, he's also a deeply rooted trumpeter with an array of influences, demonstrated here by his Afro-Cuban take on Donald Byrd's "Fly Little Bird Fly" and his choice to tackle Carmell Jones' knotty "Beep Durple." His technique can dazzle, as evidenced by his lithe squealing-at-the-clouds solo on Thelonious Monk's "Straight, No Chaser." However, he's also a canny romantic whose supple, burnished tone can pull you deeper into a melody as he does on his largely rubato take on the ballad "Polkadots and Moonbeams." Elsewhere, he delivers a languid take on fellow Chicagoan Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage," and even makes room for incisive social commentary via a spoken word poem from writer Harold Green III on "The Way We Play/Minority." A few of the songs fall flat, yet McCoo is in good voice and the production is appealingly polished, making this one of her better latter-day efforts.
