Guitarist John Lisi not only contributed to writing every song on the album, but also produced the piece of work himself at Graveyard Studios in New Orleans. What resulted is the homegrown blending of blues and funk the New Orleans guitarist is so famous for engineering. Kicking things off with a blues-driven stomper called "Chicken Fried Steak" in which Lisi sings of his hunger for "chicken on the bone," the album stays at a consistent tone, utilizing each member of the six-piece group throughout. A two-man horn section, as well as the extra-fl avorful vocals of Queen Pleshette, truly adds that extra bit of tastefulness that brings the album above those in the same category. Lisi also applies the lap steel guitar in songs like "I'll Make You An Offer" to again elevate the band's ingrained sense of creative instrumentation. The songs are varied, sometimes making you groove, and other times making you just want to lay back. Little Girl Blue Chet Baker recorded at every opportunity during the last decade or so of his tragic life, with widely varying results due to his drug addiction. But this surprising duo session with pianist Paul Bley is one of his better efforts from this period, focusing primarily on standard ballads by top composers. Bley's playing in the mid-'80s usually was freer in nature, but he willingly plays more mainstream backing for the trumpeter. Baker's tone adds to the poignant air in a rather deliberate interpretation of "If I Should Lose You," with Bley playing beautiful, sparse chords behind him. The duo gels nicely in a midtempo setting of Sonny Rollins' "Pent-Up House," while Baker's "Skidadidlin'" is a low key, bluesy number. Baker sings "You Go to My Head" in a thoughtful manner. Allegro giocoso Benjamin Schmid is a popular violinist known for his chameleonic skills in performing both classical and jazz compositions. He has credited two major influences in the development of his career, one each in these two disparate worlds of music: violinists Yehudi Menuhin and St??phane Grappelli. Schmid's ability to perform both classical and jazz music effectively is all the more amazing considering his broad repertory in each genre: in classical music he plays works by J.S. Bach, Vivaldi, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Paganini, Ysa??e, Berg, Britten, and John Cage; on the other side his repertory includes music by Cole Porter, Gershwin, Kreisler, and many others, including contemporary composer Christian Muthspiel, whose concerto for electric violin Schmid has recorded. Schmid has been quite active in the recording studio over the years, making numerous CDs for a variety of labels, including Oehms, Arte Nova, MD&G, EuroArts, and Basta Records. Benjamin Schmid was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1968. He began playing the violin in his early childhood and at eight years of age became attracted to the jazz style of Grappelli. Schmid's first serious studies were in Salzburg and Vienna, then later at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Schmid won numerous small competitions before capturing first prize in the 1992 Carl Flesch International Competition in London. By then he had met and begun performing with both Grappelli and Menuhin. With the former he appeared regularly in concerts in Vienna and Paris and, most notably, at the 1994 Salzburg Festival's opening concert. In 2000 Schmid launched a highly successful world tour playing works by two of his favorite composers: J.S. Bach and Ysa??e. His schedule included concerts in New York, San Francisco, London, Vienna, and Tokyo. Among the more popular offerings are his 2004 CD of Beethoven sonatas for violin and piano (with pianist Alfredo Perl), the first volume in a complete cycle, and his 2007 recording, Homage ?? When All Is Through is another chillout gem for friends of Fridrik Karlson's guitar music. An artist, who absolutely needs to be discovered by the huge US music market. To Do Or Not To Do, a modification of Shakespeare's "to be or to be" adds a funky attitude to the album. Sigurdur Flosason and David Thor Jonsson brilliant on alto sax respectively solo synth. Shake It Of shows Johann's plugged bass mastership. By the way Johann plays Neuser basses, but also loves the Sadowsky and the JA-Special. This time we can listen to Oskar Gudjonsson on tenor sax, a worthy addition as guest musician. Pleasure Point is a slowtempo tune with an old-fashion beat. May be a little recuperation after so many uptempo pieces. Was This A Dream is a slow tempo tune with a more dark atmosphere. Outstanding Eythor Gunnarsson 's synth solo and Johann's deep fretless bass solo. Chunk Stump is a short slap bass interplay. Some Latin flavor with Portugal Samba are magicing Gunnlaugur Briem (Drums/Percussion) and Eythor Gunnarsson (Congas), but the ulrtimative master-wizzard is undoubtly Johann with his slap and fretless bass. David Thor Jonsson adds some nice salsa runnings at piano. After a samba a waltz? Why not: Serenity Waltz. A slowtempo melancholic tune perfectly set in scene by Eythor Gunnarsson on acoustic piano. His sensible piano touches are followed by Joel Palsson 's smooth tenor sax. Phat final with Johann's slap bass. Halldor Gunnlaugur Hauksson plays the drums in Jinda's jinglebell style. America Joe Roccisano had only a month to live when Nonet was recorded on October 9, 1997 on November 9, the Charlie Parker-influenced alto saxman died of a massive heart attack at the age of 58. For Nonet, his final studio date as a leader, Roccisano led what his friend Phil Woods would term a "little big band" a nine-piece unit that includes, among others, trombonist Conrad Herwig, tenor saxophonist Tim Ries, baritone saxophonist Jack Stuckey, trumpeter Greg Gisbert, pianist Bill Charlap and drummer Terry Clarke. Enjoyable, if conventional, Nonet finds Roccisano sticking with what he did best straight-ahead hard bop and familiar jazz and pop standards such as John Coltrane's "Moment's Notice" and Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Chega de Saudade (No More Blues)." It's a unique instrument, with a different feeling than the regular tenor saxophone. In fact, it has a different attitude and personality that comes through the music as well. Because the bell of the horn is directed downward, the sound comes out of the horn differently, using the floor to fill the room with the tone of the horn. The idea was to do some famous music, some classics, and that's how the repetoire came together. I chose the material and we did one of my originals, Dewey Said, which dedicated to both Dewey Redman and Miles Dewey Davis.
