She is an unforgettable jazz singer, but she has also been an actress and lyricist, and she has run a jazz club for five years called Jenny's Place. She has been in musicals such as Blood Brothers, her voice has been used in films, and she even has a M.A. degree in linguistics to fall back on (as if she would ever need to). Evans moved to Munich, Germany, in 1976 to study to be a teacher of music and English. While working toward her degree, she became the lead singer for a band called Old Socks New Shoes. The ragtime numbers she performed with the group slowly blended toward classic jazz. Though she appears comfortable and capable singing anything from Gershwin songs to numbers by the Beatles, her sultry voice seems made just for jazz. In 1997, Evans released her debut album for ENJA Records, Shiny Stockings. The album won her good reviews by many. Girl Talk hit the stores in 1999 with tracks like "Love for Sale," "Mr. Bojangles," and "I Wanna Be Near to You." The CD, Now Is the Time, is Lorber's follow-up to 2008's Heard That. The new CD will be released June 1. By the late 1970s, Lorber had become a prominent figure in the new movement known as jazz fusion - a marriage of traditional jazz with elements of rock, R&B, funk and other electrified sounds. Lorber and his band, Jeff Lorber Fusion, first honed their craft in the Portland, Ore., club scene and rapidly expanded their reach to a national and international audience. This new incarnation of the Jeff Lorber Fusion includes bassist Jimmy Haslip (who co-produced with Lorber and Bobby Colomby), saxophonist Eric Marienthal, trumpeter Randy Brecker, guitarist Paul Jackson Jr., and drummers Vinnie Colaiuta and Dave Weckl. "We all had a vision of what we wanted this record to be," says Lorber, who points to a recent European tour with many of these same musicians - and the positive response that resulted from it - as the primary catalyst for the album. "We wanted a return to the sound of the Jeff Lorber Fusion, but informed by everything I've learned since then. All of a sudden, people seem to be interested in hearing that again. Dragonfly (4:39) Hacienda is the third volume in the Jeff Lorber Fusion's revisioning of the music they began with in the late '70s and early '80s, with a 21st century twist. Co-produced by Lorber and bassist Jimmy Haslip, the trio is rounded out by drummer Vinnie Colaiuta. There are a slew of studio regulars here to boot, including guitarists Paul Jackson, Jr. and Michael Thompson, horn players Eric Marienthal and David Mann, and percussionist Lenny Castro. "Solar Wind," featuring guest Larry Koonse on guitar, is a fine example of Lorber's current obsession with intricate composition. While its pulse is kept by Haslip and expanded by Colaiuta, the complex lyric sets up terrific solos by Mann, Lorber, and Koonse. There is a real surprise here in the cover of Frank Zappa's "King Kong," with guest Jean-Luc Ponty on violin. The band attacks it with dis[beeep]line and class. There's a rockist backdrop, and Haslip's bassline not only threads the changes but foreshadows them. There are fine keyboard and violin solos -- and killer wah-wah guitar from Thompson -- as this band weds itself to the composer's shifty time changes and spidery melodies. Ed Mann's marimba fills out the sound and adds lyric counterpoint. This tune is followed by the majestic, midtempo "The Steppe," a shimmering, layered groover with crystalline piano from Lorber, soulful alto from Marienthal, and a virtual orchestra of guitars from Thompson. The title track is a driving dance number (it's named for the Manchester dance club), with some surprising rhythmic changes inside the groove. Haslip's bass is bubbling and funky while Colaiuta lays out some outstanding breaks on the repetitive theme. Lorber throws in some killer vamps on a variety of keys and Marienthal's alto solo accents the changes even as it glides over the top. A small misstep occurs in sequencing two midtempo ballads -- "Everlast" and "Playa del Falco" -- next to one another, but the heavier grooves come back on "Escapade," with nice horns from both Marienthal and Mann; Lorber's soloing is in the pocket yet wildly creative, and his piano arpeggios showcase his own roots-jazz-funk in the soul-jazz tradition, evoking Horace Silver, Sonny Clark, Herbie Hancock, and Ramsey Lewis. Hacienda features some of Lorber's best compositions in recent memory. All Go'd Chillun Got Rhythm The tenor saxophone trio is one of the great, if somewhat underutilized lineups in jazz. Stephen Riley has made a study of the format and delivers a fine addition to a limited canon with Hart-beat. Eschewing piano and leaving the horn to carry the musical weight all by itself is an idea that was recorded by the great Sonny Rollins as early as Way Out West (Contemporary, 1957). That record set a very high standard that is rarely met, let alone exceeded. It is the Godfather of the format. One later effort that does come close is Joe Henderson's State of the Tenor (Blue Note 1985), a live recording from New York's Village Vanguard that delivered one of the definitive tenor performances of its decade. Where the Rollins date is snappy and melodic, Henderson's performance is looser, wandering a little more with his improvisations, leaving plenty of room for the bassist Ron Carter and drummer Al Foster. Hart-beat follows in the footsteps of the Henderson record, with loose, breathy interpretations of standards by pianist Thelonious Monk, saxophonist John Coltrane and, yes, Joe Henderson. Riley's sound is a little understated, relying on good construction and control, without ever screaming his horn. On this date it would be fair to call him a quiet, if energetic player. "Isotope" gets a quick statement of the melody before Neal Cane joins the fray with clean forward bass line. Riley takes his improvisations up a notch with each chorus, building a wonderfully sophisticated solo before laying out for the bass to take a turn. A less frequently played Monk classic, "Ba-Lue Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are," gets a similarly wandering treatment with equally good results. In de[beeep]hering Monk, Riley makes the critically important choice to internalize the melody into his improvisation instead of just playing over it. This kind of depth is the difference between an okay Monk interpretation and a really good one; this is a really good one. Special mention should be made of drummer Billy Hart, the most seasoned musician on the date. A veteran of Miles Davis' On the Corner (Columbia, 1972), Hart provides subtle, graceful rhythm with Riley's understated playing. Like everything else on this date, the drumming is very sophisticated. The other Henderson tune, "Black Narcissus" has Hart splashing his cymbals out behind the bass and horn, initially providing less beat and more aural soundscape before he picks up the rhythm on the ride with a rim tap. It's very sweet, delicate drumming. So does Hart-beat live up to the standards set by Henderson and Rollins? That's a tough call, given the iconic status of those efforts. In all fairness, those are almost impossibly high standards to meet. Players who couldn't hang when popular tunes were called summarily found themselves shame-faced on the sidelines of a jam session or gig. Though barely pushing forty, saxophonist Stephen Riley comes out of that storied fealty to melodic mastery and the primacy of a well-minted song. Ten years Riley's senior, pianist Peter Zak is equivalently versed. The pair put tradition to practice on Haunted Heart, an intimate assemblage of eleven standards that skew towards pre-WWII provenance, but prove anything but antiquated. Zak first teamed with Riley on the saxophonist's fifth album, adding an element in his instrument that was previously outside the tenorist's usual purview. Even so, the caliber of their musical camaraderie was nearly instantaneous. The accompanying essay to their last album together intimated the existence of this date and the results are certainly worth the wait. Absent bass and drums as rhythmic agents, the duo relies on agreed upon aural semaphores to keep the interplay from flagging. Zak's keyboard approach, at once spare and porous allows his partner to range freely through the contours of each piece and devote an even greater than customary focus on textured tonal variation. Riley uses the hardest reeds possible to generate a breathy, almost bifurcated sound that sheathes his phrases in an enveloping fine-grained rasp with direct antecedents in past tenor paragons like Don Byas and Ben Webster. Billy Strayhorn's ballad "Isfahan" serves as opener and a scintillating distillation of the carefully-constructed dynamics on display as Riley voicing the theme with sensuous, flute-like buoyancy and Zak shapes terrestrial-bound chords beneath him. Joe Henderson's "Punjab", previously tackled by Riley on an earlier session and a regular entry in his stage songbook, features the duo in an up-tempo interaction that expertly blends melodic velocity with emotive import. Once again the spontaneous communication spills over into the sublime with each player anti[beeep]ting and answering the other with accelerated alacrity. Coltrane's "Moment's Notice" is the other "relatively-recent" selection and still well over six decades old. While not quite on par with the pristine performance of the Henderson piece, it's still a gorgeous parade of sustained invention especially in a surprising mid-piece downshift to waltz-time. "Prisoner of Love", "After You've Gone" and "Pennies from Heaven" all feature unaccompanied introductory choruses by Riley. His sterling command of the form suggests that a future solo album venture should be an enterprise worthy of serious consideration. Zak's already recorded in that setting and takes comparable honors on "The Intimacy of the Blues", the title piece and "Alice in Wonderland". He makes equally excellent use of the isolation in priming the ears for Riley's empyrean entry in each case. Following a spectacularly non-rebellious and well-behaved youth in which jettisoning piano accordion studies in favour of completing a degree in Computer Science in University College Dublin was the highlight, Stella later took up the piano, taking singing and piano exams at the RIAM in Dublin and completing her Music Diploma. Studying is one thing, but music is best honed through performance. Many years of singing in musicals, bands and cabarets helped her finely-tune her craft; running parallel to this was a successful career in marketing and public relations. Combining study and on-the-job gigging has generated a versatile repertoire crossing over jazz, classical and musical theatre; having long since abandoned the corporate world for music, Stella is still most at home singing her beloved jazz standards, inspired by her big influences, Ella Fitzgerald and Barbra Streisand. In 2014, Stella released her first album "Too Darn Hot" - featuring songs from Cole Porter (the title track) and Jerome Kern as well as newly-arranged songs by Amy Winehouse and Robert Palmer - to critical acclaim; indeed, upon hearing Stella's album cover of her daughter's song Back to Black, Amy Winehouse's mother got in touch with Stella directly to say how much she loved the version, and indeed that Stella's album was being played non-stop in her house! The album gets regular radio airplay on the national airwaves in Ireland - it was Album of the Week on RTE Lyric FM, on its release - and is now starting to make waves on jazz stations in the UK, the USA, Germany and Switzerland. Indeed, the album has been selected by Aer Lingus, Ireland's national airline, for inclusion on its in-flight entertainment schedule since April 2016. In January 2015, she performed her jazz-inspired take on the music of Broadway's Stephen Sondheim, which sold out the John Field Room in Dublin's National Concert Hall; she returned there in September as part of her 2-month nationwide tour celebrating Sondheim's music; this tour was self-produced in partnership with the Irish Arts Council. No stranger to the art of the big band, Stella sings with the Hot House Big Band, has recorded with the Dublin City Jazz Orchestra, while she is also into the sixth year of her own quartet's Sunday residency in Dublin's chic and trendy Caf?? en Seine. Amongst the jazz festivals in which she has performed are Cork, Derry, Bray and Howth. Music is a universal language that is understood by many and appreciated by all, and the four members of Square One are certainly articulate and expressive. Nevertheless, their music is also full of spirit, soul and depth, the other essential ingredients of a living language. Square One will leave you with the indelible impression that In Motion is the sound of people who have really have something new to say. Joe Williamson speaks volumes on guitar, often in a leading role, but frequently in partnership with Peter Johnstone's rippling, stream-of-consciousness statements on piano. Stephen Henderson on drums and David Bowden on bass bring intellect, measured thought and reasoned responses in a rhythm section with strong opinions of its own. The result on In Motion is a burgeoning creative ambition calibrated by musical poise. The ten pieces featured on the CD are sweeping in scope, and wide in terms of the sonic narratives. There are the gleaming melodic tonalities of guitar and piano in perfect synchrony, and sharp modern edges that are clear-cut and diamond hard. There is a lightness of touch in their approach to instrumental balladry, and they bring a confident, contemporary mind-set to bear on preconceptions about folk, blues, straight-ahead jazz and fusion.
