Cheatin' Blues (6:18) I have no hesitation in nominating this album as one the most outstanding blues/rock albums of 2015. Manchester based studio producer and musician Geoff Rees is the creative driving force behind the music and manages to make every track a winner, there simply isn't an inferior track amongst this excellent collection of songs. The icing on the cake surely has to be the superb vocal talents of Shine-Eye Dee who has a sultry but powerful and distinctive vocal presence on all the tracks. Her vocals are perfect for this music and she pitches her voice with pure emotion and precise tonal quality into each song, the hallmark of a true vocal artist. "Ride" opens the album with a truck stop boogie 'power glider' and takes the listener into the badlands of Arizona & New Mexico which sets the scene for things to come with the following track "Outlaw Man" telling story of an old western gun fighter on the run, perhaps an ode to Wild Bill Longley with Shine-Eye Dee slowly tightening the noose on the song before the outlaw finally mounts the gallows to meet his maker. "Problem Child" is defined by Geoff's low down mean & dirty blues riff which sucks the listener into the age old tale of forlorn and doomed infatuation with a feel and sound production reminiscent of the Alannah Myles classic "Black Velvet". "Pretty Baby" is in my opinion the "single" on this album with a totally hypnotic rock guitar riff that nails it to the mast from the very first note with a killer middle eight bridge section and vocals to die for from Shine-Eye Dee, this song has total instant appeal. "Perfect Circumstance" has a flow all of its own and is an inspired mid tempo bitter sweet country rock song which touches the listener with positive sentiment raising the spirit whilst exposing an almost fatalistic flaw within the ideal of the songs theme and title. "Midnight Hoochie Coo" is an 'out and out' good time rocker with a great mix of guitar and piano with a powerful gutsy vocal delivery, a real foot stomper. "Cheatin' Blues" is an earthy slow burner in a similar vein to "Trouble" the Leiber & Stoller classic recorded by Elvis. The song "You Are" finds Shine-Eye Dee vocalizing on this laid back track in a higher register pitch with strong Southern Rock overtones augmented with some very atmospheric guitar playing by Geoff Rees. The ace up the sleeve here is "Flotsam & Jetsam" which is the real 'chill factor ten' song on this album as it touches the inner sanctum of the soul with the sadness of loss and a life unfulfilled, backed by just piano & violin Shine-Eye Dee's haunting and melancholic voice brings the listener to their knees as broken dreams and memories come flooding back to haunt us. Stone statues will lie weeping in the wake of this song, pure genius! "Lonely Highway" is a Freeway fast lane rocker that puts you back in the driving seat but I would be more than happy to travel down this highway with Shine-Eye Dee & The Bad Fish which I do every time I hear this album, after all isn't that what good music is supposed to do, transport the listener. It's all here in one album, great songs delivered with real emotion, hats off to Shine-Eye Dee & The Bad Fish. Em-Barry-Harris-Able You (Harris) - 5:02 Barry Harris - piano Mathias Allamane - acoustic bass Philippe Soirat - drums A Barry Harris concert always includes some good-natured introductions and pointed comments about the music business, in addition to his brilliant piano playing. He's the last of the line from the bop era to come out of Detroit, with Kenn Cox, Hank Jones, Sir Roland Hanna, and Tommy Flanagan now deceased. These performances from Rennes, France with a local rhythm section remind us how great a player Harris has always been, but also that he has mellowed with age, post-stroke, and solidly settled into his golden years. There are many references to his heroes like Duke Ellington and to the music of Thelonious Monk, a lot of spoken explanations, and the kind of entertainment factor lacking in most modern jazz. While Harris talks to the audience a lot, his musicianship is what they came to hear. He does engage listeners in audience parti[beeep]tion as on the stairstep melody of "Nascimento," and simplifies his advance rhythmic sense to them on "6, 5, 7, 3," but it is his love for Monk and Ellington that reveals his true colors. His take on George Shearing's "She" identifies his personable, easy swing, while a fast and loose "All God's Chillun Got Rhythm" proves he's still the best bebop player on the scene. This set has become typical for Harris no matter where he plays or who accompanies him, a bit predictable but enjoyable. Barry Harris is always much more enjoyable in the moment, and recordings have never really done him justice -- you have to go out and see the man live. A Place In Heaven (2:43) Slidin' Slim and Eric Hansson both surfaced on the Swedish blues scene during the mid-90's and, without knowing about each other, they shared the same passion for blues and roots music and were equally determined to dedicate their lives to the music they loved. When Eric found most of his inspiration from the great british blues masters of the 60's and made a name for himself playing the clubs in Stockholm, Slim was obsessed with the slide oriented blues from Mississippi delta and traveled the backroads of the Swedish countryside to hone his chops. The story of the duo of Slim & Hansson began in 2008 when Slim played a club in Eskilstuna, Sweden, and the club owner suggested that it would be a great idea to book an evening with the two together. Well aware of Eric's capacity, after seeing him several times at different festivals, Slim said yes and contacted Eric who wasn't a stranger to give it a shoot. It took less than a song to realize that their mutual energy and intensity on stage hit bullseye and the evening was not only a musical success but they also found common ground off stage. Finally, in 2015, the will to work together made them find the time to begin song writing sessions with the goal of entering a studio as soon a possible to make an album. The album, with the appropriate title "Better Late Than Never", is a tour de force of roots music at its best. Great songs, top notch playing performed live in the studio with a warm but edgy production perfect for the music. On Tales of Love and Longing, she performs duets with veteran pianist Fritz Pauer that -- given her two talents -- seem like trios. In keeping with the CD's title, most of the music is taken at slow tempos and has lyrics dealing with some aspect of love. A happy change of pace is a medium-tempo instrumental version of "How Deep Is the Ocean?" that, after four straight slow ballads, really wakes up the CD. Other departures include Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman," Cooper's original "I Gravitate to You," and her unaccompanied alto statement on "Body and Soul." Untilted [02:11] Seawind was a band formed in Hawaii in the mid-seventies that prominently featured a horn section of University of Indiana alums. The horn sections leader, Jerry Hey, would go on to be THE pop horn arranger of the eighties and nineties (often with the Seawind horns in tow for many of those sessions). Micheal Jackson, Earth Wind and Fire, and literally hundreds of others artists have used Jerry's arranging skills to add some restrained melodic punch to their recordings. Give a listen to the horn arrangement of Jackson's "Working Day and Night" - brilliant. That's what Hey did over and over again. Seawind was more than just a springboard for Jerry Hey and the Seawind horns however. Seawind was also a highly musical and accomplished band that released four records during their career. Some of drummer Bob Wilson's songs, ("Devil is a Liar" "Follow Your Road" and "Free") are timeless jazz/rock compositions and could easily be in the rotation on any of today's few remaining jazz stations. Seawind was around back in what I like to think of as the most exciting time in music history (the late 70's and early 80's). That was a time when people were creating the consumer electronics business buying cool new Japanese stereo gear and comically large speakers to go with them. Record companies were promoting the most eclectic mix of artists ever attenpting to pronositicate the seemingly endless and fickle listening demands of the then reefer puffing populous. Audio was king! Teens and young adults were retrofitting their cars with SuperTuners and coaxials. Cassettes made music more portable. Everyone seemed to have a pair of stereo headphones. Focused listening was the norm for music. Music and performance actually mattered. The listener (sometimes jacked up on pot) could now hear it all - every audio nuance - at home, in thier car, or through their walkman. Then MTV came and ruined it all paving the way for Justin Bieber. I digress. Seawind's music clearly mattered like many of the bands of that time. Give a listen to Seawind's Light the Light (their best IMHO) and you will hear some ferocious lockstep grooves between drummer Wilson and bassist Ken Wild full of poly-rhythmic interplay. This pulsating rhythm formed the perfect backdrop for pint-sized singer Pauline Wilson to clearly and powerfully hit unreachable-for-most high notes in between the always interesting Jerry Hey/Larry Williams horn arrangements. This was because Seawind was a band of musicians. All music majors and Berklee grads. Maybe this partly explains thier limited success - their primary appeal might have been to other musicians. After many years of going their separate ways, (keyboardist/horn player Williams - like Hey - has had a remarkable musical career) Seawind has produced a new CD, Reunion. Reunion is mix of some rerecordings along with a few new compositions. Particularly poppy is the new "Kept by Your Power." Power's sing-a-long "Oh-we-oh" chorus successfully updates their sound while capturing all that defined Seawind. I dare you not to join in singing the second time you play it! The digital recording on Reunion is pristine and songs like "He Loves You" (with a guest vocal by Al Jarreau) sound much richer than their original. The playing is consistently terrific with Williams' keyboards and Bud Nuanez's guitarist shining particularly bright. The updated arrangements are fresh, and overall Reunion is terrific reminder of what a great band Seawind was, and what a great time that was back when people really listened to the music. Good news is you can still experience that magical time again today with Reunion. Then you hear the crystal clear tones in his tenor/baritone voice and realize this artist has it all. His life's a song, he writes the song and delivers the song as if he is one with it. Whether he's standing in front of the microphone backed by a highly energetic band or sitting on a stool, leaning over his guitar belting out the tunes he's written, you know he was born to do this. Born in Eugene, Oregon, Scotts dream was to be a singer, a songwriter and to share his music with the world. Inspired by his moms love for music, he grew up tickling the keys on her piano and strumming a few chords on her guitar. He drew off of influences like Kenny Loggins, James Taylor, Journey, Michael McDonald, Garth Brooks and Cash. He's shared the stage with such acts as Trick Pony, Rascal Flatts, Willie Nelson, Jessica Andrews just to name a few. He has also performed in all 50 states, Asia and Germany. The presence of three different studio locations provides further evidence that this is something of a quilt assembly, and it is a musical sewing job in which the seams sometimes seem to have worn thin. Fans of blues and rock will find sections of agreeable groove; in fact, there are listeners who will even find the opening track entitled "Jimi the Fox" to be an absolute charmer, although to others it might seem to be the musical equivalent of a black velvet painting. Tracks such as the Lazy Lester cover "Sugar Coated Love" are superb, glowing with an extremely warm and vibrant band sound and further lit up with the almost fluorescent sound of Barry Goldberg's organ. As usual with this artist's albums, liner credits are something of a mess. Goldberg fans are used to their idol Michael Bloomfield showing up uncredited or under another name due to contract restrictions -- here he is just plain "Michael." Yet no drummer is credited at all for any of the sessions, and there is no information about which guitarists play on which track. The drum seat could conceivably be held by "Fast" Eddie Hoh, who worked on most of Goldberg's albums, but with recording sessions spread across both coasts and Muscle Shoals, AL, too, it is a good guess that more than one drummer is involved.
