Sun Of The Soul (3:57) In the full 20 years now that she's been making records, Terri Hendrix has never once had to worry about running any song or idea she's had past a marketing committee or label suit. Nor, for that matter, has she ever been especially beholden to the factions of her fanbase that would rather hear her stick to her sunny, non-confrontational side than go messing around with songs stepping too close to political or hot-button social topics for conservative comfort. Now, fans, peers, and industry know-it-alls can all debate the question of whether Hendrix's independence has been more help or hindrance to her career, but either way it's always been a given that when this Texan fancies, chances will for damn sure be taken. The proof is right there in the title alone of her latest release, which happens to be her second full-length album of new material in the last nine months. Had Hendrix released the album on any label other than her own Wilory Records, she might have still gotten away with naming it The Slaughterhouse Sessions, but surely someone on the accountability chain with a pinch more caution or sense would have at least tried to talk her out of it. Never mind the explanation about Hendrix and producer Lloyd Maines having started the record at a New Mexico guest lodging converted out of a former slaughterhouse; the bottom line is, it's a gruesome album title better fit for a black metal band - not a folky hippie-chick who collects little kids' signatures on her mandolins and who named her last record Love You Strong. What in the hell was she thinking? The answer to that question can be found straight away in the songs. What Hendrix was thinking, it turns out, was an awful lot about bad news - the kind shouted ad nauseam across all manner of media from TV to Facebook, often to the point of deafening civil discourse even amongst friends and family. She was thinking, too, about mortality, and hate, and fear, and all manner of other troubles - some perhaps of her own design - and "reachin' for the future through the wheel in a cage" while asking, "how'd you end up here?" Thinking the kinds of thoughts that can definitely seed the blues - but also stir a body, mind, and soul to rise up off the killing floor and shout, "Enough." Or, as Hendrix puts it straight-up in her Hafiz-quoting rap/rant "Bury the Devil," "Gonna dig a hole, put the devil in it." The Slaughterhouse Sessions is part of what Hendrix calls her "Project 5," a still-in-progress suite of four new albums and a book that she had originally intended to release all in 2016 but which she has now earmarked for completion next spring. All of the components are said to be thematically linked, and like its immediate predecessor, Love You Strong, Slaughterhouse does touch more than once on the topics of faith and resilience. But where Love You Strong seemed to focus more on the idea of weathering the storm, Slaughterhouse is all about not just standing firm, but pushing back. It's fitting then, that it's far and away the most musically and lyrically assertive album Hendrix has ever made, with a full seven of its 11 tracks registering as up-tempo foot-stompers ranging in mood from restless and feisty to downright fearsome. And true to her promise at the start of Project 5 that the second album would lean toward harp-infused acoustic blues, Hendrix's snarly, Sonny Terry-inspired harmonica playing is as dominant in the arrangements as Maines' arsenal of all things stringed. Two tracks in particular showcase that harp front and center: Elder Roma Wilson's "Ain't It a Shame," which has been a staple of Hendrix's live sets for half a decade now, and "One of These Mornings" (by J.C. Burris, nephew of Sonny Terry), on which Hendrix's harmonica, voice, and stomping foot are the only instruments in the mix at all. There are three more covers on the album, including a pair of straight-up gospel hymnals, the public domain "I Will Arise" and A.P. Carter's "Sun of the Soul." But it's the relentlessly grooving "Crocodile Man," penned by the late contemporary folk artist Dave Carter, that really demands attention. A first-person narrative about a fictional slippery con man with a, shall we say, "winning temperament," it's chased quite aptly by Hendrix's own "Call You to the Carpet," her most fierce and determined show of fangs this side of 2002's "I Found the Lions": "Flames are gonna lick you, smoke is gonna choke you / When they ask about you, gonna say you fried," she sings with steely, matter-of-fact conviction, ". I'll hang you upside down till the truth rolls out your eyes." Mind, not every song here packs quite that kind of heat or surprise. Although both "Double Shift Tuesday" (co-written with Slaid Cleaves) and the "The Lowdown" fit the record thematically, they lighten the weight of their worries with a not-unwelcome, playful bounce (via the former's gypsy lope and the latter's bucket-drum funk) that wouldn't have been too out of place on Hendrix's 1998 sophomore record, Wilory Farm, or its 2000 follow-up, Places in Between. But the best track of all on Slaughterhouse is the one that opens the record and which really could have only opened this record: "The News." Delivering the most arresting vocal of her career - hushed, breathy, and beautiful - over a spare arrangement of acoustic guitar with accents of shimmering electric, Hendrix drags her troubles out into the light to tell 'em what for: "I still find gold in the sun, truth be told I'm the lucky one . So take your news, take your bad news away." Somehow, he and his cohorts in Raydio, namely one Ollie Brown, found their way around the R&B scene in this era, rather deftly. Tease, first assembled in 1979 in LA, changing its members with each album; the group in this 1983 debut was perhaps their strongest incarnation. The falsetto s on the opener, Flash lets the lead vocals shine for the remainder of the album. Songs like I Found In You and Part Of Me step outside the bands influences in that they are conventional ballads, without the kind of humour that keeps you from taking the songs completely seriously. Both What Should I Do and Saturday Night tread a new wave/pop/rock territory that shows Tease venture out of comfortable R&B and Funk lands but at the same time, do not sound completely out of place or uncomfortable for the band. Bite and Pretty Little Lady bring that hard funk in heavy doses, while Put The Brakes On Baby goes left with an interesting bridge that shows the most originality of their grooves on the record, but goes a little more obviously risqu?? toward the end, almost to their detriment. Do Not Cry For Me Growing up in Kokomo, IN, Sylvia moved to Nashville around Christmas of 1975 with a definite game plan: get a job as a secretary, get to know influential people in town, and build a career as a recording artist. The plan worked. She picked up a job as the receptionist for Pi-Gem Music, headed by record producer Tom Collins. She started singing on demo sessions, and Collins helped her secure a recording contract with RCA. Since she'd never performed live before, Sylvia ended up learning to do concerts at the same time she was making hit records. With an engaging voice, a bubbly personality, and a beautiful appearance, Sylvia was practically a marketing dream, and Collins built her sound around catchy melodies and strong backbeats. Songs like "Drifter" (number one, 1981), "The Matador" (1981), "Nobody" (number one, 1982), and "Like Nothing Ever Happened" (1982) became big hits; "Nobody" even crossed over into the pop Top 40. The material was often lyrically shallow, however, and Sylvia grew increasingly frustrated. She left Collins and recorded a pair of albums with record producer Brent Maher. The second was never released. Sylvia, instead, was dropped by RCA in 1987. She used the opportunity for personal growth (she toured almost constantly during the height of her career and was emotionally drained) and to develop as a songwriter. Recorded during three different sessions back in 2011, "Supersilent 12" is produced by Deathprod from hours of recordings at his own Audio Virus LAB, Athletic Sound in Halden and the Emanuel Vigeland museum, known for its 20 second natural reverb. Since the very beginning Supersilent have always moved forward with the greatest integrity. Supersilent music is collective work, total group improvising, and not a matter of individual grandstanding. They never rehearse as a group and don't discuss the music with each other, meeting only to play concerts or to record. Every recording and every concert is a unique occasion, not to be repeated, and their music lives in a no-man's-land between the genres, somewhere between avant garde free jazz, rock, electronica and modern composition. It can sometimes appear to be written or at least arranged, again making it clear that these musicians communicate on a high, almost telepathic level. "Supersilent 12" brings further evidence to the above. Known as being heavy on electronics, this time they have moved further towards the avant garde territory populated by Deathprod and current Arve Henriksen releases "Chron" and "Cosmic Creation". It features some of their darkest and most eerie soundscapes, but there´s still room for Henriksen´s lyrical trumpet. Supersilent was formed in Oslo in 1997 after producer, musician and sound-artist Helge Sten approached improvising trio Veslefrekk with the idea of forming a new quartet. The first time they played together, without prior rehearsals, was at Bergen Jazz Festival the same year. Their first album, the triple set "1-3" was released in late 97, also being the first release on Rune Grammofon. Drummer Jarle Vespestad left the group in 2008 without being replaced. St??le Storl?¸kken is a member of Humcrush, Elephant9, BOL, Reflections In Cosmo and Terje Rypdal´s Skywards trio and a couple of other projects. In fact, the whole idea of national music relies on the concept of an intrinsic national spirit, which creates an original musical expression. The only problem with a concept like national music is that it tends to pigeonhole musicians and create prejudice rather than adventurousness. Then it is great to have an artist like Icelandic pianist Sunna Gunnlaugs, who is good at turning things around. It wouldn't be far off the mark to see her as a kind of musical trickster, who refuses to be placed within a certain sound or tradition. She is aware of her Icelandic roots and has used the country's musical legacy on Songs from Iceland (Sunny Sky, 2009), but the tranquil folk melodies of Iceland is balanced by an elegant modernistic exploration of time signatures and an infectious swing. This musical blend of old and new also comes to the fore on Distilled, which finds Gunnlaugs in the congenial company of drummer Scott McLemore and bassist Thorgrimur Jonsson. Whether they swing elegantly on "Momento," dive deep into balladic nostalgia on the title track or explore delicate textures on the brief haiku-like "spin 7," there's a sense of an organic meeting between tradition and modernism or what might be called an accessible experimentalism. Sugar Ray reels you back to hollars of the Mississippi Delta with his original tune, 'Keep on Sailing' when black workers on the levee's, prison road gangs and cotton fields could only sing surreptitiously of escaping the denigrating social/racial system prevalent in the South. There isn't a song on this fine release that is not true to its roots. He dubbed her "Little Miss Sugar Pie" in 1955, and not because she had a sweet tooth or liked to bake. "While we were in the studio he named me Sugar Pie," DeSanto recalled in an interview, "Because I was so little. I wore a size three shoe and I weighed about 85 pounds. I was very tiny." She's a half-pint in size, true, but in talent or voice assuredly not. Although typecast as a blues singer, she also takes care of business on the soul end of things and is a convincing jazz vocal stylist as well. That would be enough to gain most singers a reasonable slice of glory, but DeSanto also happens to be a hilarious comedienne, a show-stopping dancer, and a superb and highly original songwriter whose compositions have been cut by Fontella Bass, Billy Stewart, Little Milton, Bobby McClure, Minnie Riperton, Jesse James, the Dells, and the Whispers. Otis discovered her performing at the Ellis Theater, the venue which she feels was sort of a birthing ground for her musical style. Otis dropped by one of the venue's regular talent shows only to observe DeSanto walking off with first prize. He promptly offered her a contract to come to Los Angeles to cut her first record ever. From the late '50s onward she performed regularly at rhythm & blues havens such as the Apollo in New York, the Regal in Chicago, and the Howard in Washington, D.C. At the Apollo she made quite an impression on the so-called "Godfather of Soul," James Brown, leading to her becoming his opening act for two years. In 1964, DeSanto was the only female performer on a touring American Folk Blues Festival bill with a lineup that would make a blues fan soak the concert program with drool, including Willie Dixon, Sleepy John Estes, Clifton James, Sunnyland Slim, Hubert Sumlin, Lightnin' Hopkins, and Sonny Boy Williamson II, also known as Rice Miller. She has written some 100 songs and prefers to perform her own material. On a series of four excellent compact discs on the Jasman label, only two songs are not written by her. Classic Sugar Pie, released in 1997, was the first full-length live recording by this artist whose on-stage workout has always totally bypassed her record releases in terms of creativity and intensity. The Cars had reached a new level of fame with 1984's Heartbeat City, and that success was beginning to cause some friction within the tight-knit Boston collective, so they did what any smart band would do: they released a Greatest Hits compilation and Ocasek, guitarist Elliot Easton, and Orr all recorded solo albums. Despite appearing on numerous collaborative projects, The Lace would be Orr's only proper solo release - he died of pancreatic cancer in 2000 - and of the three mid-'80s solo flights, only his retained the melodic snap that made the Cars such radio staples. Produced by Orr, Larry Klein, and Mike Shipley - the latter mixed Heartbeat City - The Lace sits sonically snug between that album and 1987's Door to Door, using programmed drums, keyboards, guitar (courtesy of Easton), and Orr's impossibly solid voice to deliver a record that never achieves greatness but still feels good all the way through.
