No Use In Worryin' Based in Cincinnati, Ohio, The Blues Merchants are a group of 4 seasoned musicians that have merged their talents to produce a unique blend of traditional blues literature, blues based rock tunes and original compositions performed in a style unique to the group. Guitarist, vocalist, & songwriter Chris Kepes has worked with the likes of Dayton, Ohio based blues veteran Piney Brown on the blues circuit and toured nationally with The Alex Glover Show based in New Jersey and the Robin Lewis Band from Las Vegas. Chris formed the group MoeStCool with drummer Dave Koenig in 2003, which morphed into The Blues Merchants in early 2006 with the addition of keyboardist Bob Nave, and bassist King Phillip Buscema. Drummer Dave Koenig has been playing drums for 40 years in an assortment of various jazz and rock groups as well as forays in to the orchestra pit bands of the musical theatre. In addition to his work with The Blues Merchants Dave currently holds down the drum chair of the Monday Night Big Band in Anderson Township, Ohio. Bassist, guitarist, vocalist King Phillip has been a regular on the Cincinnati blues scene since the mid sixties. As a guitarist he has worked with Steve Tracy, Albert Washington, Pigmeat Jarret, Alice Hoskins, and the Cheryl Renee Band. He played bass with the Cincinnati Blues All Stars. King also played guitar and bass on Joe Duskin's studio recordings. Although best known as a jazz radio host for the past 25 years on WNOP and WVXU in Cincinnati, keyboard player & vocalist Bob Nave started playing in rhythm & blues bars and dance halls in 1958. Bob was a founding member of the acclaimed Lemon Pipers in the 60's, and was the re[beeep]ient of a Cammy award for lifetime achievement in 2003. The now professional harmonica player grew up in Mumbai, India and studied traditional Hindustani music at the age of 9 years old. When he was 18 (circ. 1998), he moved to California to attend San Jose State University and began hanging out at underground blues clubs. After college, he worked as a software engineer at a major Silicon Valley tech company for 11 years, and by night, he performed Chicago blues in local venues. 2016 marks a milestone for Aki as he's spent half his life in India and half in the United States. His debt album for Little Village, Aki Goes To Bollywood, is a true representation of his musical DNA -- classic 1950s/60s Bollywood and down-home American blues. Though some instrumental albums and DJs have attempted to rearrange Bollywood music mixed with other genres, never before has an Indian blues musician so triumphantly recorded songs by the film industry's biggest stars such as Mohammad Rafi, Kishore Kumar, R.D. Burman, and S.D. Burman. Aki Kumar notes, "I realized that many of the Indian songs I loved had, in fact, been influenced by American blues music and I wanted to bring them together." Aki Goes To Bollywood blends sitars with Delta blues jams, Hindi vocals with ferocious harp playing. Aki has single-handedly created "Mumbai Meets Muddy," his own blues movement. While Other Side purposely avoided standards, Bossa Nova is full of them. Anyone with even a casual knowledge of Brazilian pop-jazz and the bossa nova will be familiar with such standards as "The Girl From Ipanema," "Agua de Beber" and "Chega de Saudade." But while Caram's choices may be obvious, her treatment of them isn't. Nick's Bump Groove-oriented jazz didn't start with the organ combos and soul-jazz groups of the '60s and '70s; plenty of grooving occurred with Dixieland in the '10s and '20s and swing in the '30s and early to mid-'40s. But soul-jazz did remind the jazz world that it was still OK for an improviser to groove -- that not everything had to be as complex and demanding as John Coltrane's "Giant Steps" or Sonny Rollins' "Oleo." And those soul-jazz and jazz-funk grooves of the '60s and '70s continue to hold up well after all these years, which is why Ben Sidran celebrates that era on this 2003 date. Although Sidran is known for his singing, he favors an instrumental setting on Nick's Bump; this time, Sidran uses the Hammond organ and the electric piano to get his points across -- and he savors the funkier side of post-swing jazz whether he is embracing Sonny Clark's "Blue Minor," Donald Byrd's "Black Jack," or three Eddie Harris compositions ("Listen Here," "Mean Greens," and "Cryin' Blues"). If Nick's Bump sounds dated, it is dated in the positive sense -- dated as in remembering how rewarding a particular era was and being faithful to the spirit of that era. Nick's Bump recalls a time when soul-jazz players realized that jazz was losing more and more listeners to R&B and rock -- and that the only way to win over those Marvin Gaye, Rolling Stones, and James Brown fans was to groove and be accessible.
