Kindness Amber Coffman is best known as a singer and guitarist for the genre-bending Dirty Projectors. Co-produced by head Projector Dave Longstreth, City of No Reply proves Coffman a dynamic songwriter in her own right, from the off-kilter girl-group shoop of "No Coffee" to the dusky, Caribbean inflections of the title track. "There's a voice inside of me/And it's time to listen," Coffman sings amid the '50s-ish lilt of "All to Myself." Time to let it out, too. New York-based musician Amber Coffman is probably best-known for her part in the alternative rock outfit Dirty Projectors, in which she sang and played guitar. Coffman initially started out as a member of the post-rock band Sleeping People until 2007, when she became a full-time member of Dirty Projectors and toured to promote the Rise Above album. Coffman went on to be a key member of the band for 2009's Bitte Orca and 2012's Swing Lo Magellan, utilizing intricate vocal parts and three-part harmonies that became an integral part of the band. Aside from Dirty Projectors, Coffman collaborated with electronic musician Rusko on the 2010 track "Hold On," as well as "Get Free" by Major Lazer, "She Knows" from J. Cole, and "No Regrets" with Snoop Lion and T.I. Show Me Prolific producer and Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach is one of those artists whose music always manages to sound fresh yet comfortingly familiar. His second solo album sounds like a lost gem from the '70s, mixing California folk-pop ("Waiting on a Tune"), soul lite ("Malibu Man," "King of a One Horse Town"), and a touch of psychedelia ("Cherrybomb") for a breezy, kaleidoscopic listen that's perfect for summer. As frontman of the Black Keys, vocalist/guitarist Dan Auerbach embraced the raw sound of electric blues-rock alongside drummer Pat Carney. The Ohio-based band released a string of acclaimed albums during the early 2000s, including the Top 20 hit Attack & Release, before Auerbach opted to branch out with a concurrent solo career. Having built his own studio in Akron, Ohio, the songwriter began recording new material that melded his bluesy background with elements of psychedelia, country, and gospel. Recording sessions took place during the downtime between the Black Keys' tour dates, and Auerbach soon compiled enough material for a debut album. The resulting record, Keep It Hid, was released in 2009 by Nonesuch Records. After the release of Keep It Hid, Auerbach returned to the Black Keys and the duo broke into the mainstream with 2010's Brothers and 2011's El Camino. The group's success opened the door for more creative collaborations for Auerbach and he seized them, producing everybody from the garage rock band Reigning Sound to New Orleans R&B legend Dr. John. The Black Keys took an extended break after 2014's Turn Blue, and that year also saw Auerbach's biggest productions to date: Lana Del Rey's Ultraviolence, Ray LaMontagne's Supernova, and Nikki Lane's debut All or Nothin'. In 2015, he formed the sideband the Arcs, who released Yours, Dreamily, that year. Composed in 1966, it is often regarded as a watershed work, heralding Shostakovich's final stylistic period marked by a certain sombreness and a trend towards more transparent scoring. The op. 126 concerto has become somewhat overshadowed by its older, more accessible sibling, something which also applies to the second work on this disc, for completely different reasons. Having compmleted his Cello Cocnerto No. 2 in 1945, Bohuslav Martinu was unsuccessful in his attempts to interest a leading cellist in promoting it. When the composer furthermore reworked his first cello concerto in 1955, the new version effectively obliterated all traces of the 1945 concerto, which didn't receive its first performance until 1965, six years after Martinu's death. This instrumental album not only highlights Mackay's brilliant playing but his underrated talent for writing incredibly melodic, moving songs. The moods on this album move from melancholy to joyous, and it all makes sense. When Mackay reissued the album in 1992 on his own Riff label, he added four outtakes that. While interesting, neither adds nor detracts from the original beauty of this album. This present recording contains all of Faur??'s music for cello and piano, including the much-loved ??l??gie and Sicilienne - pieces that are sometimes described as 'salon music', with qualities that caused Debussy to dub the composer 'the master of charms'. But interspersed with this lighter fare are also the two sonatas from Faur??'s later period when, suffering from increasing deafness, he developed a more pared-down style. Even though the sonatas came into being only a few years apart they are nevertheless quite different - appearing in 1917 Sonata No. 1 in D minor is very much a wartime work, at times almost violent and rough. The G minor Sonata is altogether more accessible, with a vivacious finale that caused the composer Vincent d'Indy to remark to the 78-year old Faur??: 'How lucky you are to stay young like that!'
