The daughter of Spanish former priest Antonio and puertorrique??a Encarnita Garc?­a de Jes??s, Kany grew up in a home filled with music in the town of Toa Baja. The youngest of three musically inclined siblings, Kany began studying classical music as a child. Already well versed in cello, music theory, and voice, Kany began attending the renowned Escuela Libre de M??sica at age 13. In her mid-teens she abandoned the idea of a career in classical music in favor of pursuing her passion for songwriting. When the time came, Garc?­a continued her studies at the Conservatorio de M??sica de Puerto Rico. In her early twenties, a brush with fame became a brush with death for the budding artist. Following a successful audition for the television program Objectivo Fama, she fell asleep behind the wheel, barely surviving a near-fatal car accident. The hospital stay cost her the opportunity to appear on the show. This setback did not keep Garc?­a from the craft that she loved. Continuing to write and perform led to talks with Sony BMG some years later. While being courted by the music industry superpower, Sony invited her to share the stage with Franco De Vita at an engagement in Puerto Rico. Her performance was met so warmly, it garnered the evening's only standing ovation, and an offer of a recording contract followed shortly thereafter. Her debut album, Cualquier D?­a, was released in July of 2007 and reached number ten on Billboard's Latin Pop Albums chart. In 2008 she won a pair of Latin Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album. Her follow-up, 2009's Boleto de Entrada, entered the Top Latin Albums chart at number six. Its single, "Feliz," landed inside the Top Five of the Latin Pop Songs chart. The album was nominated for a Latin Grammy. Garc?­a toured extensively for the next year and lent her voice to recordngs by Tego Calderon (El Que Sabe, Sabe) and Gilberto Santa Rosa (Irrepetible). Her third self-titled album was issued in July of 2012. It debuted at number one on various charts in Puerto Rico and the United States. It netted four charting singles and a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Pop Album. She followed it with the concert recording En Vivo in 2014. When not touring she wrote and recorded with producer David Kahne (Paul McCartney, Lana Del Rey). The pre-release single "Perfecto Para Mi" arrived in the fall of the following year, scoring well inside the Top 40 of the Latin Pop Songs chart and showing high visibility on streaming charts. In contrast to the African country's high-spirited, heavily electronic dance styles of zouk and makossa, Dikongue has taken a more introspective and melodic direction with his music. While his debut 1995 album, Wa (You), was marked by outspoken commentary about the military regime, racism and difficulties of post-colonial life in Cameroon, Dikongue took a more reflective approach with his second album, C'est La Vie, which was released in 1998. Dedicated to the late Nigerian vocalist Fela Kuti and late American actor Robert Mitchum, the album reached the top slot on music charts in Europe. Although Cameroonean rhythms remain the foundation of Dikongue's music, his songs reflect influences as diverse as reggae, samba, salsa, soul music and jazz. Dikongue cites late Cameroonean composer Eboa Lotin, vibrato-heavy vocalist/poet Pierre Akendengue and Armenian-born French singer-composer Charles Aznavour as influences. Born to a upper middle class family in the capital city of Yaounde, Dikongue spent several years in South Africa, singing in an Anglican church choir. Moving to Paris in 1989 with plans to attend law school, Dikongue decided instead to enroll in a music school. The decision displeased his parents, who withdrew their financial support. Dikongue remained in Paris, supporting himself as a dishwasher and mover while studying music and composition. Although Dikongue sings in the Dovuala language, he writes his songs in French and works with a translator. Born into a vaudeville family in Seattle in 1914, Dennis learned how to play the piano at a young age, leading to a job with Horace Heidt while Dennis was still in his teens. He eventually moved to Hollywood, where he worked in clubs accompanying singers such as Martha Tilton, Merry Macs, and the Pied Pipers. Dennis was still with the Pipers when they joined up with Tommy Dorsey, and served as arranger, composer, and coach for Dorsey. During his service in WWII, Dennis did radio work and arranged music for Glenn Miller's AAF Orchestra, among others. Dennis' chief collaborator was lyricist Tom Adair, and his best-known tunes include "Will You Still Be Mine?," "Let's Get Away from It All," "Everything Happens to Me" (1941), and "Angel Eyes" (1953), but he also penned "We Belong Together," "We've Reached the Point of No Return," and "You Can Believe Me." Dennis also did a series of recordings for the Glendale, RCA, Jubilee, and Kapp labels. Each album featured their fondness for soul blues (for which their voices are admirably suited) versus the straight-ahead gritty 12-bar blues of, say, Muddy Waters. The comparisons to Cray still apply as Armstrong's supple voice is heard to good effect here on 11 songs (more soul than blues) that depict various dilemmas facing modern man. The title track, for example, is a litany of border-crossing problems that would be funny if it weren't so close to the truth. Set to a catchy rhythm enhanced by his slide guitar, Armstrong warns "Have your papers in order, you see the world has changed-we've got blues at the border" and goes on to list what you need to cross the Mexican border, e.g., "your passport, a picture of your grandmother, your uncle's shoe size." "Devil's Candy" (it takes the form of a woman whose kisses are like candy) also features his potent slide guitar. Best song: "Brand New Man," a peppy blues. While his previous release, Dark Night, was steeped in a soul/blues vein, this album is a solid, stripped-down blues session. Armstrong's guitar chops (especially on slide guitar) and impassioned vocals continue to gain strength following the horrendous attack on his life in 1997. Making an encore appearance is guitarist Michael Ross, who blends in with the dominant role Armstrong assumes, while the keyboard work is provided by Jimmy Pugh of the Robert Cray Band.
