One More Drink Hans van Lier (born in Groningen, the Netherlands 1961) is a versatile guitarplayer. His solo's are often lyrical, but he can also really storm. This always happens with great melodic sense. He masters various styles, and he is not afraid of rock 'n roll. Hans is self-taught as a guitarplayer. At the age of fourteen he began playing the electric guitar. He soon learnt a lot of chords. On a given day he discovered a nice 'run', which he soon began to use as a basis for his playing. It turned out that he discovered the blues scale on his own. In this same year he did his first gig in Appelscha. (Friesland, the Netherlands) Hans got a lot of inspiration from his direct environment where a lot of music was made. He studied the records of Blues players like Albert Collins, Buddy Guy, Elmore James, Luther 'guitar' Johnson and Stevie Ray Vaughan. After a few years as a rythm guitar player Hans went solo at the age of eighteen. During the following years he worked with various bluesbands. In 1978 he entered the Dutch Guitar Championship in Paradiso. He finished third! Hans has done a lot of work with female singers. He toured with Lia Ona in Denmark, and Gina de Boer (the Dutch Janis Joplin) has been in his band too. He worked with a.o. Hanneke Kappen (recorded a CD with her), Inki de Jonghe (King Lier), Rosa King from Amsterdam and Tineke Schoemaker (well known from 'Barrelhouse', one of the most successful bluesbands in the Netherlands). Together with Tineke, Hans was the best during a jazz- and bluesfestival in Friesland. He has also done some work with male singers: B.J. Hegen, Lourens Leeuw, Hans Dulfer, Marcel Kapteijn (Ten Sharp), Eddie C. Campbell from Chicago and guitarplayer Mick Taylor, old member of The Rolling Stones. Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon, better familiar as Double Trouble of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Chance; where Jiffy Schellenberg (lead vocals & rhythm guitar) met Robbie Q (drums) in a bar in Mexico at 3am on January 1, 2011. Perseverance; grinding away going out and seeing band after band perform until Jiffy saw Jamil Alexandre (lead guitar) playing on stage and asked him to be part of this project. Luck, having Niall McCarney (bass & backup vocals) play at an open mic where Jiffy was the host and then turning out to be an excellent fit in the band. With Rob being the first real member of the band, Anything But is still a little green. That being said, every member has been playing music most of their lives which is why Anything But is such an exciting new band. In the time they have been together, they have played dozens of shows in and around Vancouver, gone on two tours (one to Calgary and the other to Winnipeg), recorded a six song EP titled 0x01 and have just completed a 10 track album titled 0x02. 0x01 has received airplay on CFBX, CiTR, CJSF, UMFM (University of Manitoba), CBC Radio 2 and Roots Radio International. The brainchild of Jiffy, Anything But delivers a strikingly original brand of lyrical rock 'n roll. Anything But's songs tell evocative stories. Sometimes those stories reflect the struggle of a lifetime, sometimes they perfectly capture a powerful moment, but each one rewards repeated listens. The band's genre bounces between folk, pop, heavier rock and even psychedelic. He racked up a massive success in this field in 1976 with Black Widow, a slick instrumental excursion that combined the musical dexterity of jazz with the dance-friendly rhythms of disco. This album found Schifrin turning his skills as an arranger and keyboardist to a set of material that matched up some unlikely but effective covers with a few originals. Highlights among the covers include "Quiet Village," which transforms the exotica classic into a slow-burning funk vamp dressed with plenty of spacey synthesizer, and "Moonglow & Theme From Picnic," which reworks these classic film themes by giving them keyboard-driven arrangements that are gently nudged along by an insistent beat. Black Widow also spawned a dancefloor hit with Schifrin's imaginative reworking of "Jaws," which transformed John Williams' spooky monster-movie theme into an ominous, percolating slice of nocturnal funk built on wah-wah guitar and Schifrin's elegantly jazzy keyboard excursions. In terms of the original tunes, the standout is the title track, a keyboard showcase that weaves surging strings around a funky bass groove that is fleshed out with all manner of synth and electric piano shadings. The strong disco edge to the proceedings may turn off jazz purists, but Schifrin's imaginative and stylish arrangements keep the music from succumbing to disco-beat boredom, and his expert backup band (including session stalwarts like Andy Newmark and John Tropea) attacks the material with energy and style to burn. Slow Burn (4:22) Al Lerman has a nice feel for the blues, and he does a yeoman's work on this album. He writes the material, sing, plays both acoustic and electric guitar and blows a nasty harmonica. He gets support by Alec Fraser-Omar Tunnoch/b, Al Cross-Bucky Berger/dr and Lance Anderson/p with the feel keeping earthy and relaxed. His voice is wonderfully rough and tumbled, and he mixes it well with the harp on lazy and slinky pieces like "It Takes Me All Night Long" and the steady "Gonna Have To Wait." The team gets gritty with piano and acoustic guitar with "Totally Out Of Whack" and some good old Crescent City boogie takes place on "Kokomo" while the raucous guitar takes you to Chicago on "Slow Burn". The band can boogie as well, shuffling on "Don't Push Your Mess On Me" and "Any Way You Want" as Lerman picks and grins like a juke joint junkie. Lots of good smouldering sounds here. ~by George W. His roots are unmistakenly in the blues, but has also been influenced by countless other aspects of roots music. This musical variety has become a trademark of Hans Theessink, who as a songwriter has succeeded in building bridges to the present in addressing issues which reflect the reality of the here and now. Mason performed in Toronto as early as 1959, but based his career in Nova Scotia. He tirelessly toured Canada as part of the Dutch Mason Trio with musicians such as bassist Ronnie Miller and drummer Ken Clattenburg, building an audience for the blues and earning the nickname "Prime Minister of the Blues." As his reputation for being a colourful performer in a tough, fundamental, urban blues style grew during the late 1970s and the 1980s, he began working on the club circuit across the country, appearing frequently at the Rising Sun in Montreal and Albert's Hall in Toronto.
