We began recording in 2010 and the album has taken a lot longer to finish than we ever anti[beeep]ted but the good news is, the new disc will finally be hitting the streets in December. We're asking you to play a role in the album's success, but first - we want to tell you a little about the album and about this musical journey we set out on in 2004. When I was growing up, my favorite recording artists weren't afraid to be diverse or to show their depth of musical skill. From the Allman Brothers, to Rush, Led Zeppelin, and even Muddy Waters wasn't afraid to break the rules in blues when he went from playing traditional acoustic style to electric blues. He was one of the first to use a new-fangled thing called a "fuzz box". My point is, the best weren't afraid to combine different styles of songs on an album, and I always looked forward to being surprised by the music. That's what I've tried to do on all of our albums, and that's how this album came to be titled This, That & the Other Thing. These are definitely not cookie cutter, formulaic songs. Funky Chicken (Live) (12:34) Few of rock & roll's founding figures are as likable as Rufus Thomas. From the 1940s onward, he has personified Memphis music; his small but witty cameo role in Jim Jarmusch's Mystery Train, a film which satirizes and enshrines the city's role in popular culture, was entirely appropriate. As a recording artist, he wasn't a major innovator, but he could always be depended upon for some good, silly, and/or outrageous fun with his soul dance tunes. He was one of the few rock or soul stars to reach his commercial and artistic peak in middle age, and was a crucial mentor to many important Memphis blues, rock, and soul musicians. Thomas was already a professional entertainer in the mid-'30s, when he was a comedian with the Rabbit Foot Minstrels. He recorded music as early as 1941, but really made his mark on the Memphis music scene as a deejay on WDIA, one of the few black-owned stations of the era. He also ran talent shows on Memphis' famous Beale Street that helped showcase the emerging skills of such influential figures as B.B. King, Bobby Bland, Junior Parker, Ike Turner, and Roscoe Gordon. Thomas had his first success as a recording artist in 1953 with "Bear Cat," a funny answer record to Big Mama Thornton's "Hound Dog." It made number three on the R&B charts, giving Sun Records its first national hit, though some of the sweetness went out of the triumph after Sun owner Sam Phillips lost a lawsuit for plagiarizing the original Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller tune. Thomas, strangely, would make only one other record for Sun, and recorded only sporadically throughout the rest of the 1950s. Thomas and his daughter Carla would become the first stars for the Stax label, for whom they recorded a duet in 1959, "'Cause I Love You" (when the company was still known as Satellite). In the '60s, Carla would become one of Stax's biggest stars. On his own, Rufus wasn't as successful as his daughter, but issued a steady stream of decent dance/novelty singles. These were not deep or emotional statements, or meant to be. Vaguely prefiguring elements of funk, the accent was on the stripped-down groove and Rufus' good-time vocals, which didn't take himself or anything seriously. The biggest by far was "Walking the Dog," which made the Top Ten in 1963, and was covered by the Rolling Stones on their first album. Thomas hit his commercial peak in the early '70s, when "Do the Funky Chicken," "(Do The) Push and Pull," and "The Breakdown" all made the R&B Top Five. As the song titles themselves make clear, funk was now driving his sound rather than blues or soul. Thomas drew upon his vaudeville background to put them over on-stage with fancy footwork that displayed remarkable agility for a man well into his 50s. The collapse of the Stax label in the mid-'70s meant the end of his career, basically, as it did for many other artists with the company. In 2001, Rufus Thomas was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. Here the sextet roars through a set of originals and jump swing standards in a live performance. The band is all swagger and attitude. But while the vocals can tend toward a sing-song sameness of spoken-word rapping, the horns and rhythm section constantly rev things up. On tracks like "Park's Place" and "The Mooch," the band really cuts loose, especially the horns. Other highlights include "Barflies at the Beach" and the band's signature tune, "Hey Pachuco!" which the group performed in the film The Mask. In 1999 Roosevelt recorded there first studio album "Generous",at Tony Atoreus "Famous" recording studios in there home town of Cardiff Wales UK. After progressively giging around the local circuit, they decided to take some time out and record the songs that had been the base of there recent live set. With a budget consisting of a couple of better paid live gigs, and a little help,they set about recording live and quickly over there budgeted couple of days.. hence,this giving the album a great freshness and timeless feel, with a live continuity of sound. The band returned to the live circuit, and the arduous task of self promotion,sending demos out to all who would listen. One of those demos landed on the desk of legendary Radio Two Presenter Bob Harris.. who did listen and for the next couple of weeks Bob aired the album on his Saturday night rock show and featured it on his best of British show, along side established artists such as David Grey, Robert Plant,Richard Thompson,to name but a few. The album was very well received and the band enjoyed some minor notoriety,and are still performing and recording to this day (albums" All In Good Time" "deluxe Interior"). But so often is the is the case the lack of good management and direction the band never could quit capitalised on the promotion that the legendary Mr Harris had kindly and most appreciatively given them with "Generous". But it still remains here today as one of those little lost gems. The explosive sense of retro-funk and cool returns here, and if it weren't for a few silly, self-indulgent moments, this disc would be near perfect. On "Get Ready! (Intro)," he jams coolly on wah-wah over a crunchy shuffle groove as rapper Love Child introduces the band and the cross-racial appeal of this music (which is unnecessary given the liner notes and the broad appeal of this sound). No doubt Jordan is just trying to be tongue-in-cheek on "Ronny, You Talk Too Much!," but the feisty track -- on which percussive, high-register piano chords act as accents behind some of Jordan's most aggressive lines -- is distracted by Love Child's cutesy telephone conversation scenario. "No Pay, No Pay" blends Alvin McCray's moody, soft synth harmonies with Jordan's slick update on the Wes Montgomery sound as the Catfish Choir echoes with funky whispers in the background. That flavor also inhabits the all-instrumental "Floor & More," which unnecessarily adds croaking synth sounds in selected spots. Mariah Carey soundalike Fay Simpson leads the forward-thinking "Keep Your Head Up," another atmospheric crunch-funk track on which Jordan takes a soft, supporting role, his guitar often blending with the voices. The bassline of "On the Record" is a playful O'Jays-flavored takeoff, with Jordan then chiming in with dual, high-low, sometimes blending sounds on rhythm and lead guitar. The sound effects-filled title track finds the guitarist kicking back in trip-hop heaven, while "(The Theme From) Underworld" is sort of a hip-hop version of the Twin Peaks theme. "Toe Jam" is a wild, hardcore rap closer that somewhat disrupts the smoother, atmospheric soul vibe of the disc, though its anthemic nature makes it fun on its own. This album is the penultimate in what BBC Music has described as a 'triumph of Brahmsian thought', namely the survey by Barry Douglas of the composer's complete works for solo piano. Three years after the release of Volume 1, the winner of the 1986 Tchaikovsky Competition is now performing this repertoire in the finest international venues, such as the Wigmore Hall in July 2015 and Concertgebouw in 2016, when the series will come to a highly anti[beeep]ted climax with the final volume. Taking a big step further in his career with this achievement, Barry Douglas is gaining a reputation of one of the few accomplished world-class piano virtuosi of the romantic repertoire. This fifth volume is probably the most virtuosic to date, as it includes the transcendent Scherzo in E flat minor (among Brahms's earliest surviving compositions), technically demanding variations (especially Book II of the famous Op. 35; see Volume 4 for Book I), as well as several intermezzi, strongly marked by Brahms's love of metrical complications.
