I'm Her Daddy (4:24) When the producers and Mario decided together the repertoire to be performed, Mario doubted he might be able to reproduce stylistically songs of the classic American repertoire such as "Slow Hot Wind" and "On A Clear Day", or even "A Handful Of Soul". The result instead can be stunning to most. In this album, not only he delivers a very convincing interpretation but his voice adds a different colour to the music. In the past few years Mario collaborated with Alessandro Magnanini (Was-A-Bee), multi-faced musician as well as excellent arranger. With Alessandro, Mario co-wrote two authentic gems "No Mercy For Me" and "This Is What You Are". The latter was released as a single and licensed on various compilations, gaining enough success. Whilst "No Mercy For Me" reveals Mario's true soul of a crooner, "This Is What You Are" went on air in U.K. on heavy rotation in Norman Jay's program Giant 45 for BBC London. Whereas in Italy it was programmed by RMC and later became the music to the network's corporate TV commercial. Tributes to rock-blues, soul-blues and rhythm-blues follow respectively in the shape of "I Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes" by Al Kooper, a _ on the trail of Deirdre Wilson Tabac where Mario's soulful passionate signing shines throughout the song; "I'm Her Daddy" originally by the one and only Bill Withers and "No Trouble on The Mountain" by L.C Cook, another marvellous tune convincingly covered by Mario's unique voice. AllMusic Review by James Manheim: Sisters Marie and Veronica Kuijken say that their familial relationship to conducting veteran Sigiswald Kuijken "cannot be denied but on the other hand, should not be too strongly stressed." Fair enough, and with this release covering Mozart's keyboard duet music they enter chronological territory in which the elder Kuijken was never terribly comfortable and do well. They play paired modern copies of an instrument by German builder Andreas Stein: not the usual choice for Mozart's Vienna period, but a sound he was known to have liked. And they get excellent results. The volume top end of this fortepiano (not conventionally "pianoforte" as the credits state) is not big, but the instruments are agile in fast passagework and, more important, capable of an exceptional variety of textures and attacks. The players exploit these beautifully, often creating almost orchestral effects. Sample the Adagio introduction of the Sonata for piano four hands in F major, K. 497 (track 4), with all the shades of color that emerge from its murky chromaticism. Even in the big outer movements the division between full textures and lightly accompanied melody is shaded off in interesting ways. Then, when Mozart does exploit the full capabilities of his new instrument at climaxes, the effect is stirring. Props also go to the Challenge Classics engineers, working at Galaxy Studios in the Belgian resort town of Mol; they create an intimate sound that picks up the details and stands in convincingly for an 18th century drawing room. A really fresh Mozart recording, strongly recommended. Amazing Grace Marcus Printup gained his initial recognition for his playing with pianist Marcus Roberts' group. His second Blue Note recording as a leader features his attractive trumpet in a quintet with Roberts, the Paul Gonsalves-inspired tenor of Stephen Riley, bassist Reuben Rogers and the young drummer Jason Marsalis. Printup at this point already had a fairly orignal sound of his own which was slightly influenced by Wynton Marsalis. His technique is impressive on the date as is his warmth and consistently creative ideas. Printup contributed seven mostly straightahead originals to the well-rounded and continually interesting modern mainstream set (including the brooding ballad "When Forever Is Over," athe catchy "Leave Your Name And Number" and the funky title cut). "M & M," a major/minor blues duet with pianist Roberts which looks back to the 1920's, is a definite highlight. Printup also performs jazz standards by Miles Davis (a swinging "Dig"), Benny Golson and Wayne Shorter along with an emotional version of the traditional "Amazing Grace." The Lord's Prayer (5:10) Marcus Miller is foremost known as a Grammy-winning bass player, but as he proves on Silver Rain, Miller is equally formidable as an arranger. Taking songs from a disparate mix of artists that includes Stevie Wonder, Duke Ellington, Jimi Hendrix, Edgar Winter, Beethoven and Prince, Miller's skills are in almost embarrassing abundance here. On Edgar Winter's 70s rock jam "Frankenstein", his band (including the likes of Kirk Whalum on tenor and Kenny Garret on alto) flat out wails, but Miller's slapping bass keeps the groove completely locked down. In contrast, his take on Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" sets the stage for Miller's mellow-groove skills while the cover of Stevie Wonder's "Boogie On Reggae a Woman" is Miller at his intricate, funky best. On Prince's "Girls & Boys", Macy Gray adds her swooping, sensual vocals while Eric Clapton sits in on the title track. Clocking in at around 75 minutes, this CD is full to bursting, but what's striking here is not the quantity, but the quality. Miller is able to effortlessly make this material his own; moreover he is able to take an impossibly diverse set of songs and construct an album with real cohesion and flow. There is a lot happening on this album, as multi-instrumentalist Miller swaps instruments, moods and musicians from tune to tune, to his credit, however, he never loses the trail. In among the most enviable careers in music, Miller is a two-time Grammy-winner and the composer/producer of ten critically acclaimed and genre-defying albums (seven studio and three live). Even the most devoted follower may be astonished to realise that Renaissance is only his eighth studio project since his 1983 debut, Suddenly, considering the abundance of occasions Miller's name has appeared within album credits and that he has dazzled with performances, compositions and productions in the company of some of the world s most respected and accomplished players and superstars - from the mid-'70s to the present. As a multi-instrumentalist, Marcus is highly proficient as a keyboardist, clarinetist/bass clarinetist and, primarily, as a world-renowned electric bassist, topping critics' and readers' polls for three decades. His resume as an A-list player brims with over 500 recording credits as a sideman on albums across the spectrum of musical styles: rock (Donald Fagen and Eric Clapton), Jazz (George Benson, Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Sample, Wayne Shorter and Grover Washington, Jr.), pop (Roberta Flack, Paul Simon and Mariah Carey), R&B (Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan), hip hop (Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg), blues (Z.Z. As a producer, writer and player, he was the last primary collaborator of jazz legend Miles Davis, contributing the composition and album 'Tutu' to the canon of contemporary jazz music. The breadth of his collaborative talents were best showcased in his work with the late, great soul man Luther Vandross, contributing to well over half of his albums as a producer, composer and/or player on a string of hits capped by 'Power of Love/Love Power' for which Marcus won his first Grammy, 1991's R&B Song of the Year. And starting with David Sanborn's 1980 album Hideaway and its follow-up Voyeur (for which the alto sax giant won a Grammy performing Marcus' composition 'All I Need is You', Marcus not only left an indelible mark on Sanborn's distinctive sound, he laid the often-copied blueprint for the coolest of contemporary jazz sounds. Style, soul and intense professionalism have set Marcus Miller at the top of his game for three decades now. Marcus was born in 1959 and raised in a musical family that includes his father, William Miller (a church organist and choir director) and jazz pianist Wynton Kelly. By 13, Marcus was proficient on clarinet, piano and bass guitar, and already writing songs. Two years later he was working regularly in New York City, eventually playing bass and writing music for jazz flutist Bobbi Humphrey and keyboardist Lonnie Liston Smith. Miller soon became a top call session musician, gracing well over 500 albums, recording with musicians and in countries around the globe - from Frank Sinatra and Elton John to Bill Withers and LL Cool J. After two R&B-leaning solo albums for Warner Bros. in the '80s followed by co-leading The Jamaica Boys (with drummer Lenny White and singer Mark Stevens), Marcus took a hiatus then returned rejuvenated with the galvanizing The Sun Don't Lie (1993) and Tales (1995), both of which found him brilliantly connecting the dots of Black music's evolution. Every Tear It might have come out in 2007, but S.O.S.: Save Our Soul is a record very much grounded in the soul music of the 1960s and 1970s, both in material and sound. To begin with, all but one of the songs is a cover of a '60s or '70s soul tune. The arrangements have a very vintage sound as well, singer Marc Broussard and multi-instrumentalist/background singer Calvin Turner being the only constant factors in a rotating cast of players. Give Broussard credit for not opting, for the most part, for overdone standards; there are covers of a few big hits here (Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues [Make Me Wanna Holler]," the Staple Singers' "Respect Yourself," the Pointer Sisters' "Yes We Can, Can"), but also interpretations of lesser-known songs associated with Stevie Wonder, Bobby Womack, Rance Allen, Al Green, and Blood, Sweat & Tears. On its own terms, it's an OK record; Broussard's a good (if not too distinctive) singer, and the musical grooves are solid. If you made a mixtape of the originals, though, it would blow this out of the water, making this an inessential tribute to vintage soul that's rather pointless except as a showcase of Broussard's skill in carrying on the tradition. [This version of S.O.S.: Save Our Soul includes the bonus track "Kissing My Love."] The son of Boogie Kings guitarist (and Louisiana Hall of Fame member) Ted Broussard, singer/songwriter Marc Broussard was seemingly destined for a life as a music man. His upbringing in Lafayette, Louisiana, instilled in him an affinity for R&B alongside the Cajun trappings of southern Louisiana. Drawing vocal and stylistic influence from Otis Redding and Brian McKnight while bearing the preternaturally gruff vocals of John Hiatt and Dr. John, Broussard was barely 20 at the time of his first album's release. Momentary Setback appeared to encouraging reviews on the independent Ripley Records label in September 2002. Soon afterwards, the young musician inked a deal with Island Def Jam. With Island's support, doors began to open for Broussard. "Just Like That," a track from the Momentary Setback album, was culled for inclusion in the 2003 Lost and Found, Vol. 1 compilation alongside such Americana artists as Ryan Adams and the Jayhawks; that same year, Broussard also appeared on a Bruce Springsteen tribute album, Light of Day, with the track "Back in Your Arms." He spent the autumn of 2003 on the road, where he served as opening act for Dave Matthews Band, Maroon 5, and fellow singer/songwriter Gavin DeGraw. Carencro, a sophomore album named after Broussard's hometown, was issued by Island Records in 2004, and he made the jump from Island to Atlantic Records four years later for the release of Keep Coming Back. He became a road dog after the album's release, opening for and sharing stages with everyone from Maroon 5 and the Dave Matthews Band to Willie Nelson, O.A.R., and Bonnie Raitt.
